We report 4 new detections of 21-cm absorption from a systematic search of 21-cm absorption in a sample of 17 strong (Wr(MgII 2796)>1A) intervening MgII absorbers at 0.5<z<1.5. We also present 20-cm milliarcsecond scale maps of 40 quasars having 42 intervening strong MgII absorbers for which we have searched for 21-cm absorption. Combining 21-cm absorption measurements for 50 strong MgII systems from our surveys with the measurements from literature, we obtain a sample of 85 strong MgII absorbers at 0.5<z<1 and 1.1<z<1.5. We present detailed analysis of this sample, taking into account the effect of the varying 21-cm optical depth sensitivity and covering factor associated with the different quasar sight lines. We find that the 21-cm detection rate is higher towards the quasars with flat or inverted spectral index at cm wavelengths. About 70% of 21-cm detections are towards the quasars with linear size, LS<100 pc. The 21-cm absorption lines having velocity widths, DeltaV>100 km/s are mainly seen towards the quasars with extended radio morphology at arcsecond scales. However, we do not find any correlation between the integrated 21-cm optical depth or DeltaV with the LS measured from the milliarcsecond scale images. All this can be understood if the absorbing gas is patchy with a typical correlation length of ~30-100 pc. We show that within the measurement uncertainty, the 21-cm detection rate in strong MgII systems is constant over 0.5<z<1.5, i.e., over ~30% of the total age of universe. We show that the detection rate can be underestimated by up to a factor 2 if 21-cm optical depths are not corrected for the partial coverage estimated using milliarcsecond scale maps. Since stellar feedback processes are expected to diminish the filling factor of cold neutral medium over 0.5<z<1, this lack of evolution in the 21-cm detection rate in strong MgII absorbers is intriguing. We present the results from our search for HI 21-cm absorption in a sample of 16 strong FeII systems ($W_{rm r}$(MgII $lambda2796$) $ge1.0$ AA and $W_{rm r}$(FeII $lambda2600$) or $W_{rm FeII}$ $ge1$ AA) at $0.5<z<1.5$ using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and the Green Bank Telescope. We report six new HI 21-cm absorption detections from our sample, which have increased the known number of detections in strong MgII systems at this redshift range by $sim50$%. Combining our measurements with those in the literature, we find that the detection rate of HI 21-cm absorption increases with $W_{rm FeII}$, being four times higher in systems with $W_{rm FeII}$ $ge1$ AA compared to systems with $W_{rm FeII}$ $<1$ AA. The $N$(HI) associated with the HI 21-cm absorbers would be $ge 2 times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$, assuming a spin temperature of $sim500$ K (based on HI 21-cm absorption measurements of damped Lyman-$alpha$ systems at this redshift range) and unit covering factor. We find that HI 21-cm absorption arises on an average in systems with stronger metal absorption. We also find that quasars with HI 21-cm absorption detected towards them have systematically higher $E(B-V)$ values than those which do not. Further, by comparing the velocity widths of HI 21-cm absorption lines detected in absorption- and galaxy-selected samples, we find that they show an increasing trend (significant at $3.8sigma$) with redshift at $z<3.5$, which could imply that the absorption originates from more massive galaxy haloes at high-$z$. Increasing the number of HI 21-cm absorption detections at these redshifts is important to confirm various trends noted here with higher statistical significance.
We present the cross-correlation function of MgII absorbers with respect to a volume-limited sample of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) at z=0.45-0.60 using the largest MgII absorber sample and a new LRG sample from SDSS DR7. We present the clustering si gnal of absorbers on projected scales r_p = 0.3-35 Mpc/h in four Wr(2796) bins spanning Wr(2796)=0.4-5.6A. We found that on average MgII absorbers reside in halos < log M_h > approx 12.1, similar to the halo mass of an L_* galaxy. We report that the weakest absorbers in our sample with W_r(2796)=0.4-1.1A reside in relatively massive halos with < log M_h > approx 12.5^{+0.6}_{-1.3}, while stronger absorbers reside in halos of similar or lower masses < log M_h > approx 11.6^{+0.9}. We compared our bias data points, b, and the frequency distribution function of absorbers, f_{W_r}, with a simple model incorporating an isothermal density profile to mimic the distribution of absorbing gas in halos. We also compared the bias data points with Tinker & Chen (2008) who developed halo occupation distribution models of MgII absorbers that are constrained by b and f_{W_r}. The simple isothermal model can be ruled at a approx 2.8sigma level mostly because of its inability to reproduce f_{W_r}. However, b values are consistent with both models, including TC08. In addition, we show that the mean b of absorbers does not decrease beyond W_r(2796) approx 1.6A. The flat or potential upturn of b for Wr(2796) gtrsim 1.6A absorbers suggests the presence of additional cool gas in massive halos.

We present the results of a survey for intervening HI 21-cm absorbers at intermediate and low redshift (0<z<1.2). For our total sample of 24 systems, we obtained high quality data for 17 systems, the other seven being severely affected by radio frequ ency interference (RFI). Five of our targets are low redshift (z<0.17) optical galaxies with small impact parameters (<20 kpc) toward radio-bright background sources. Two of these were detected in 21-cm absorption, showing narrow, high optical depth absorption profiles, the narrowest having a velocity dispersion of only 1.5 km/s, which puts an upper limit on the kinetic temperature of T_k<270 K. Combining our observations with results from the literature, we measure a weak anti-correlation between impact parameter and integral optical depth in local (z<0.5) 21-cm absorbers. Of eleven CaII and MgII systems searched, two were detected in 21-cm absorption, and six were affected by RFI to a level that precludes a detection. For these two systems at z~0.6 we measure spin temperatures of T_s=(65+/-17) K and T_s>180 K. A subset of our systems were also searched for OH absorption, but no detections were made.
Strong foreground absorption features from singly-ionized Magnesium (Mg II) are commonly observed in the spectra of quasars and are presumed to probe a wide range of galactic environments. To date, measurements of the average dark matter halo masses of intervening Mg II absorbers by way of large-scale cross-correlations with luminous galaxies have been limited to z<0.7. In this work we cross-correlate 21 strong (W{lambda}2796>0.6 {deg}A) Mg II absorption systems detected in quasar spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 with ~32,000 spectroscopically confirmed galaxies at 0.7<z<1.45 from the DEEP2 galaxy redshift survey. We measure dark matter (DM) halo biases of b_G=1.44pm0.02 and b_A=1.49pm0.45 for the DEEP2 galaxies and Mg II absorbers, respectively, indicating that their clustering amplitudes are roughly consistent. Haloes with the bias we measure for the Mg II absorbers have a corresponding mass of 1.8(+4.2/-1.6) times 10^12h-1M_sun, although the actual mean absorber halo mass will depend on the precise distribution of absorbers within DM haloes. This mass estimate is consistent with observations at z=0.6, suggesting that the halo masses of typical Mg II absorbers do not significantly evolve from z~1. We additionally measure the average W{lambda}2796>0.6 AA gas covering fraction to be f =0.5 within 60 h-1kpc around the DEEP2 galaxies, and we find an absence of coincident strong Mg II absorption beyond a projected separation of ~40 h-1kpc. Although the star-forming z>1 DEEP2 galaxies are known to exhibit ubiquitous blueshifted Mg II absorption, we find no direct evidence in our small sample linking W{lambda}2796>0.6 AA absorbers to galaxies with ongoing star formation.

(Abridged) We present the results of a systematic GBT and GMRT survey for 21-cm absorption in a sample of 10 DLAs at 2<z_abs<3.4. Analysis of L-band VLBA images of the background QSOs are also presented. We detect 21-cm absorption in only one DLA (at z_abs = 3.1745 towards J1337+3152). Combining our data with the data from the literature (a sample of 28 DLAs) and assuming the measured core fraction at milliarcsecond scale to represent the gas covering factor, we find that the HI gas in DLAs at z> 2 is predominantly constituted by WNM. The detection rate of 21-cm absorption seems to be higher for systems with higher N(HI) or metallicity. However, no clear correlation is found between the integrated 21-cm optical depth (or spin temperature) and either N(HI), metallicity or velocity spread of the low ionization species. There are 13 DLAs in our sample for which high resolution optical spectra covering the expected wavelength range of H_2 absorption are available. We report the detection of H_2 molecules in the z_abs = 3.3871 21-cm absorber towards J0203+1134 (PKS 0201+113). In 8 cases, neither H_2 nor 21-cm absorption are detected. The lack of 21-cm and H_2 absorption in these systems can be explained if most of the HI in these DLAs originate from low density high temperature gas. In one case we have a DLA with 21-cm absorption not showing H_2 absorption. In two cases, both species are detected but do not originate from the same velocity component. In the remaining 2 cases 21-cm absorption is not detected despite the presence of H_2 with evidence for the presence of cold gas. All this is consistent with the idea that the H_2 components seen in DLAs are compact (with sizes of < 15 pc) and contain only a small fraction (i.e typically <10%) of the total N(HI) measured in the DLAs.
