D = 2+1 gravity with a cosmological constant has been shown by Bonzom and Livine to present a Barbero-Immirzi like ambiguity depending on a parameter. We make use of this fact to show that, for positive cosmological constant, the Lorentzian theory can be partially gauge fixed and reduced to an SU(2) Chern-Simons theory. We then review the already known quantization of the latter in the framework of Loop Quantization for the case of space being topogically a cylinder. De Sitter Chern-Simons gravity in D = 1 + 2 spacetime is known to possess an extension with a Barbero-Immirzi like parameter. We find a partial gauge fixing which leaves a compact residual gauge group, namely SU(2). The compacticity of the residual g auge group opens the way to the usual LQG quantization techniques. We recall the exemple of the LQG quantization of SU(2) CS theory with cylindrical space topology, which thus provides a complete LQG of a Lorentzian gravity model in 3-dimensional space-time.
We make a critical review of the semiclassical interpretation of quantum cosmology and emphasise that it is not necessary to consider that a concept of time emerges only when the gravitational field is (semi)classical. We show that the usual results of the semiclassical interpretation, and its generalisation known as the Born-Oppenheimer approach to quantum cosmology, can be obtained by gauge fixing, both at the classical and quantum levels. By `gauge fixing we mean a particular choice of the time coordinate, which determines the arbitrary Lagrange multiplier that appears in Hamiltons equations. In the quantum theory, we adopt a tentative definition of the (Klein-Gordon) inner product, which is positive definite for solutions of the quantum constraint equation found via an iterative procedure that corresponds to a weak coupling expansion in powers of the inverse Planck mass. We conclude that the wave function should be interpreted as a state vector for both gravitational and matter degrees of freedom, the dynamics of which is unitary with respect to the chosen inner product and time variable.
Whether gravity is quantized remains an open question. To shed light on this problem, various Gedankenexperiments have been proposed. One popular example is an interference experiment with a massive system that interacts gravitationally with another distant system, where an apparent paradox arises: even for space-like separation the outcome of the interference experiment depends on actions on the distant system, leading to a violation of either complementarity or no-signalling. A recent resolution shows that the paradox is avoided when quantizing gravitational radiation and including quantum fluctuations of the gravitational field. Here we show that the paradox in question can also be resolved without considering gravitational radiation, relying only on the Planck length as a limit on spatial resolution. Therefore, in contrast to conclusions previously drawn, we find that the necessity for a quantum field theory of gravity does not follow from so far considered Gedankenexperiments of this type. In addition, we point out that in the common realization of the setup the effects are governed by the mass octopole rather than the quadrupole. Our results highlight that no Gedankenexperiment to date compels a quantum field theory of gravity, in contrast to the electromagnetic case.

Causal set quantum gravity is a Lorentzian approach to quantum gravity, based on the causal structure of spacetime. It models each spacetime configuration as a discrete causal network of spacetime points. As such, key questions of the approach includ e whether and how a reconstruction of a sufficiently coarse-grained spacetime geometry is possible from a causal set. As an example for the recovery of spatial geometry from discrete causal structure, the construction of a spatial distance function for causal sets is reviewed. Secondly, it is an open question whether the path sum over all causal sets gives rise to an expectation value for the causal set that corresponds to a cosmologically viable spacetime. To provide a tool to tackle the path sum over causal sets, the derivation of a flow equation for the effective action for causal sets in matrix-model language is reviewed. This could provide a way to coarse-grain discrete networks in a background-independent way. Finally, a short roadmap to test the asymptotic-safety conjecture in Lorentzian quantum gravity using causal sets is sketched.

Since its introduction in 1962, the Newman-Penrose formalism has been widely used in analytical and numerical studies of Einsteins equations, like for example for the Teukolsky master equation, or as a powerful wave extraction tool in numerical relat ivity. Despite the many applications, Einsteins equations in the Newman-Penrose formalism appear complicated and not easily applicable to general studies of spacetimes, mainly because physical and gauge degrees of freedom are mixed in a nontrivial way. In this paper we approach the whole formalism with the goal of expressing the spin coefficients as functions of tetrad invariants once a particular tetrad is chosen. We show that it is possible to do so, and give for the first time a general recipe for the task, as well as an indication of the quantities and identities that are required.
