We show that in imaginary time quantum metric fluctuations of empty space form a self-consistent de Sitter gravitational instanton that can be thought of as describing tunneling from nothing into de Sitter space of real time (no cosmological constant or scalar fields are needed). For the first time, this mechanism is activated to give birth to a flat inflationary Universe. For the second time, it is turned on to complete the cosmological evolution after the energy density of matter drops below the threshold (the energy density of instantons). A cosmological expansion with dark energy takes over after the scale factor exceeds this threshold, which marks the birth of dark energy at a redshift $1+zapprox 1.3$ and provides a possible solution to the coincidence problem. The number of gravitons which tunneled into the Universe must be of the order of $10^{122}$ to create the observed value of the Hubble constant. This number has nothing to do with vacuum energy, which is a possible solution to the old cosmological constant problem. The emptying Universe should possibly complete its evolution by tunneling back to nothing. After that, the entire scenario is repeated, and it can happen endlessly.

We formulate Barrow holographic dark energy, by applying the usual holographic principle at a cosmological framework, but using the Barrow entropy instead of the standard Bekenstein-Hawking one. The former is an extended black-hole entropy that arise s due to quantum-gravitational effects which deform the black-hole surface by giving it an intricate, fractal form. We extract a simple differential equation for the evolution of the dark energy density parameter, which possesses standard holographic dark energy as a limiting sub-case, and we show that the scenario can describe the universe thermal history, with the sequence of matter and dark energy eras. Additionally, the new Barrow exponent $Delta$ significantly affects the dark energy equation of state, and according to its value it can lead it to lie in the quintessence regime, in the phantom regime, or experience the phantom-divide crossing during the evolution.
Recently, Kallosh and Linde have drawn attention to a new family of superconformal inflationary potentials, subsequently called $alpha$-attractors. The $alpha$-attractor family can interpolate between a large class of inflationary models. It also has an important theoretical underpinning within the framework of supergravity. We demonstrate that the $alpha$-attractors have an even wider appeal since they may describe dark matter and perhaps even dark energy. The dark matter associated with the $alpha$-attractors, which we call $alpha$-dark matter ($alpha$DM), shares many of the attractive features of fuzzy dark matter, with $V(varphi) = frac{1}{2}m^2varphi^2$, while having none of its drawbacks. Like fuzzy dark matter, $alpha$DM can have a large Jeans length which could resolve the cusp-core and substructure problems faced by standard cold dark matter. $alpha$DM also has an appealing tracker property which enables it to converge to the late-time dark matter asymptote, $langle wrangle simeq 0$, from a wide range of initial conditions. It thus avoids the enormous fine-tuning problems faced by the $m^2varphi^2$ potential in describing dark matter.
Studying the effects of dark energy and modified gravity on cosmological scales has led to a great number of physical models being developed. The effective field theory (EFT) of cosmic acceleration allows an efficient exploration of this large model space, usually carried out on a phenomenological basis. However, constraints on such parametrized EFT coefficients cannot be trivially connected to fundamental covariant theories. In this paper we reconstruct the class of covariant Horndeski scalar-tensor theories that reproduce the same background dynamics and linear perturbations as a given EFT action. One can use this reconstruction to interpret constraints on parametrized EFT coefficients in terms of viable covariant Horndeski theories. We demonstrate this method with a number of well-known models and discuss a range of future applications.
We consider a cosmology with decaying metastable dark energy and assume that a decay process of this metastable dark energy is a quantum decay process. Such an assumption implies among others that the evolution of the Universe is irreversible and vio lates the time reversal symmetry. We show that if to replace the cosmological time $t$ appearing in the equation describing the evolution of the Universe by the Hubble cosmological scale time, then we obtain time dependent $Lambda (t)$ in the form of the series of even powers of the Hubble parameter $H$: $Lambda (t) = Lambda (H)$. Out special attention is focused on radioactive like exponential form of the decay process of the dark energy and on the consequences of this type decay.

We propose a dark energy model with a logarithmic cosmological fluid which can result in a very small current value of the dark energy density and avoid the coincidence problem without much fine-tuning. We construct a couple of dynamical models that could realize this dark energy at very low energy in terms of four scalar fields quintessence and discuss the current acceleration of the Universe. Numerical values can be made to be consistent with the accelerating Universe with adjustment of the two parameters of the theory. The potential can be given only in terms of the scale factor, but the explicit form at very low energy can be obtained in terms of the scalar field to yield of the form V(phi)=exp(-2phi)(frac{4 A}{3}phi+B). Some discussions and the physical implications of this approach are given.
