We investigate the use of matrix product states (MPS) to approximate ground states of critical quantum spin chains with periodic boundary conditions (PBC). We identify two regimes in the (N,D) parameter plane, where N is the size of the spin chain and D is the dimension of the MPS matrices. In the first regime MPS can be used to perform finite size scaling (FSS). In the complementary regime the MPS simulations show instead the clear signature of finite entanglement scaling (FES). In the thermodynamic limit (or large N limit), only MPS in the FSS regime maintain a finite overlap with the exact ground state. This observation has implications on how to correctly perform FSS with MPS, as well as on the performance of recent MPS algorithms for systems with PBC. It also gives clear evidence that critical models can actually be simulated very well with MPS by using the right scaling relations; in the appendix, we give an alternative derivation of the result of Pollmann et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 255701 (2009)] relating the bond dimension of the MPS to an effective correlation length.

The power of matrix product states to describe infinite-size translational-invariant critical spin chains is investigated. At criticality, the accuracy with which they describe ground state properties of a system is limited by the size $chi$ of the m atrices that form the approximation. This limitation is quantified in terms of the scaling of the half-chain entanglement entropy. In the case of the quantum Ising model, we find $S sim {1/6}log chi$ with high precision. This result can be understood as the emergence of an effective finite correlation length $xi_chi$ ruling of all the scaling properties in the system. We produce five extra pieces of evidence for this finite-$chi$ scaling, namely, the scaling of the correlation length, the scaling of magnetization, the shift of the critical point, and the scaling of the entanglement entropy for a finite block of spins. All our computations are consistent with a scaling relation of the form $xi_chisim chi^{kappa}$, with $kappa=2$ for the Ising model. In the case of the Heisenberg model, we find similar results with the value $kappasim 1.37$. We also show how finite-$chi$ scaling allow to extract critical exponents. These results are obtained using the infinite time evolved block decimation algorithm which works in the thermodynamical limit and are verified to agree with density matrix renormalization group results.

We consider scaling of the entanglement entropy across a topological quantum phase transition in one dimension. The change of the topology manifests itself in a sub-leading term, which scales as $L^{-1/alpha}$ with the size of the subsystem $L$, here $alpha$ is the R{e}nyi index. This term reveals the universal scaling function $h_alpha(L/xi)$, where $xi$ is the correlation length, which is sensitive to the topological index.
We present a unified view of finite-size scaling (FSS) in dimension d above the upper critical dimension, for both free and periodic boundary conditions. We find that the modified FSS proposed some time ago to allow for violation of hyperscaling due to a dangerous irrelevant variable, applies only to k=0 fluctuations, and so there is only a single exponent eta describing power-law decay of correlations at criticality, in contrast to recent claims. With free boundary conditions the finite-size shift is greater than the rounding. Nonetheless, using T-T_L, where T_L is the finite-size pseudocritical temperature, rather than T-T_c, as the scaling variable, the data does collapse on to a scaling form which includes the behavior both at T_L, where the susceptibility chi diverges like L^{d/2} and at the bulk T_c where it diverges like L^2. These claims are supported by large-scale simulations on the 5-dimensional Ising model.

I study the universal finite-size scaling function for the lowest gap of the quantum Ising chain with a one-parameter family of ``defect boundary conditions, which includes periodic, open, and antiperiodic boundary conditions as special cases. The un iversal behavior can be described by the Majorana fermion field theory in $1+1$ dimensions, with the mass proportional to the deviation from the critical point. Although the field theory appears to be symmetric with respect to the inversion of the mass (Kramers-Wannier duality), the actual gap is asymmetric, reflecting the spontaneous symmetry breaking in the ordered phase which leads to the two-fold ground-state degeneracy in the thermodynamic limit. The asymptotic ground-state degeneracy in the ordered phase is realized by (i) formation of a bound state at the defect (except for the periodic/antiperiodic boundary condition) and (ii) effective reversal of the fermion number parity in one of the sectors (except for the open boundary condition), resulting in a rather nontrivial crossover ``phase diagram in the space of the boundary condition (defect strength) and mass.

We develop a scaling theory for the finite-size critical behavior of the microcanonical entropy (density of states) of a system with a critically-divergent heat capacity. The link between the microcanonical entropy and the canonical energy distributi on is exploited to establish the former, and corroborate its predicted scaling form, in the case of the 3d Ising universality class. We show that the scaling behavior emerges clearly when one accounts for the effects of the negative background constant contribution to the canonical critical specific heat. We show that this same constant plays a significant role in determining the observed differences between the canonical and microcanonical specific heats of systems of finite size, in the critical region.
