We present a systematical study of thermal Hall effect on a bismuth single crystal by measuring resistivity, Hall coefficient, and thermal conductivity under magnetic field, which shows a large thermal Hall coefficient comparable to the largest one in a semiconductor HgSe. We discuss that this is mainly due to a large mobility and a low thermal conductivity comparing theoretical calculations, which will give a route for controlling heat current in electronic devices.

The ratio of the Zeeman splitting to the cyclotron energy ($M=Delta E_{rm Z}/hbar omega_{rm c}$) for hole-like carriers in bismuth has been quantified with a great precision by many experiments performed during the past five decades. It exceeds 2 whe n the magnetic field is along the trigonal axis and vanishes in the perpendicular configuration. Theoretically, however, $M$ is expected to be isotropic and equal to unity in a two-band Dirac model. We argue that a solution to this half-a-century-old puzzle can be found by extending the $kcdot p$ theory to multiple bands. Our model not only gives a quantitative account of magnitude and anisotropy of $M$ for hole-like carriers in bismuth, but also explains its contrasting evolution with antimony doping pressure, both probed by new experiments reported here. The present results have important implications for the magnitude and anisotropy of $M$ in other systems with strong spin-orbit coupling.
We implement the molecular beam epitaxy method to embed the black-phosphorus-like bismuth nanosheets into the bulk ferromagnet Cr$_2$Te$_3$. As a typical surfactant, bismuth lowers the surface tensions and mediates the layer-by-layer growth of Cr$_2$ Te$_3$. Meanwhile, the bismuth atoms precipitate into black-phosphorus-like nanosheets with the lateral size of several tens of nanometers. In Cr$_2$Te$_3$ embedded with Bi-nanosheets, we observe simultaneously a large topological Hall effect together with the magnetic susceptibility plateau and magnetoresistivity anomaly. As a control experiment, none of these signals is observed in the pristine Cr$_2$Te$_3$ samples. Therefore, the Bi-nanosheets serve as seeds of topological Hall effect induced by non-coplanar magnetic textures planted into Cr$_2$Te$_3$. Our experiments demonstrate a new method to generates a large topological Hall effect by planting strong spin-orbit couplings into the traditional ferromagnet, which may have potential applications in spintronics.
The mathematical field of topology has become a framework to describe the low-energy electronic structure of crystalline solids. A typical feature of a bulk insulating three-dimensional topological crystal are conducting two-dimensional surface state s. This constitutes the topological bulk-boundary correspondence. Here, we establish that the electronic structure of bismuth, an element consistently described as bulk topologically trivial, is in fact topological and follows a generalized bulk-boundary correspondence of higher-order: not the surfaces of the crystal, but its hinges host topologically protected conducting modes. These hinge modes are protected against localization by time-reversal symmetry locally, and globally by the three-fold rotational symmetry and inversion symmetry of the bismuth crystal. We support our claim theoretically and experimentally. Our theoretical analysis is based on symmetry arguments, topological indices, first-principle calculations, and the recently introduced framework of topological quantum chemistry. We provide supporting evidence from two complementary experimental techniques. With scanning-tunneling spectroscopy, we probe the unique signatures of the rotational symmetry of the one-dimensional states located at step edges of the crystal surface. With Josephson interferometry, we demonstrate their universal topological contribution to the electronic transport. Our work establishes bismuth as a higher-order topological insulator.
We investigate the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) at room temperature in thin film heterostructures of antiferromagnetic, insulating, (0001)-oriented alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite) and Pt. We measure their longitudinal and transverse resistivities while r otating an applied magnetic field of up to 17T in three orthogonal planes. For out-of-plane magnetotransport measurements, we find indications for a multidomain antiferromagnetic configuration whenever the field is aligned along the film normal. For in-plane field rotations, we clearly observe a sinusoidal resistivity oscillation characteristic for the SMR due to a coherent rotation of the Neel vector. The maximum SMR amplitude of 0.25% is, surprisingly, twice as high as for prototypical ferrimagnetic Y3Fe5O12/Pt heterostructures. The SMR effect saturates at much smaller magnetic fields than in comparable antiferromagnets, making the alpha-Fe2O3/Pt system particularly interesting for room-temperature antiferromagnetic spintronic applications.
The quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI) state has been demonstrated in two semiconductor systems - HgTe/CdTe quantum wells (QWs) and InAs/GaSb QW bilayers. Unlike the HgTe/CdTe QWs, the inverted band gap in InAs/GaSb QW bilayers does not open at the $ Gamma$ point of the Brillouin zone, preventing the realization of massless Dirac fermions. Here, we propose a new class of semiconductor systems based on InAs/Ga(In)Sb multilayers, hosting a QSHI state, a graphene-like phase and a bilayer graphene analogue, depending on their layer thicknesses and geometry. The QSHI gap in the novel structures can reach up to 60 meV for realistic design and parameters. This value is twice as high as the thermal energy at room temperature and significantly extends the application potential of III-V semiconductor-based topological devices.
