An update on recent methods for automated stellar parametrization is given. We present preliminary results of the ongoing program for rapid parametrization of field stars using medium resolution spectra obtained using Vainu Bappu Telescope at VBO, Kavalur, India. We have used Artificial Neural Network for estimating temperature, gravity, metallicity and absolute magnitude of the field stars. The network for each parameter is trained independently using a large number of calibrating stars. The trained network is used for estimating atmospheric parameters of unexplored field stars.

Identification of metal-poor stars among field stars is extremely useful for studying the structure and evolution of the Galaxy and of external galaxies. We search for metal-poor stars using the artificial neural network (ANN) and extend its usage to determine absolute magnitudes. We have constructed a library of 167 medium-resolution stellar spectra (R ~ 1200) covering the stellar temperature range of 4200 to 8000 K, log g range of 0.5 to 5.0, and [Fe/H] range of -3.0 to +0.3 dex. This empirical spectral library was used to train ANNs, yielding an accuracy of 0.3 dex in [Fe/H], 200 K in temperature, and 0.3 dex in log g. We found that the independent calibrations of near-solar metallicity stars and metal-poor stars decreases the errors in T_eff and log g by nearly a factor of two. We calculated T_eff, log g, and [Fe/H] on a consistent scale for a large number of field stars and candidate metal-poor stars. We extended the application of this method to the calibration of absolute magnitudes using nearby stars with well-estimated parallaxes. A better calibration accuracy for M_V could be obtained by training separate ANNs for cool, warm, and metal-poor stars. The current accuracy of M_V calibration is (+-)0.3 mag. A list of newly identified metal-poor stars is presented. The M_V calibration procedure developed here is reddening-independent and hence may serve as a powerful tool in studying galactic structure.

M dwarf stars are the most common stars in the Galaxy, dominating the population of the Galaxy by numbers at faint magnitudes. Precise and accurate stellar parameters for M dwarfs are of crucial importance for many studies. However, the atmospheric p arameters of M dwarf stars are difficult to be determined. In this paper, we present a catalog of the spectroscopic stellar parameters ($T_{eff}$ and [M/H]) of $sim$ 300,000 M dwarf stars observed by both LAMOST and Gaia using Stellar Label Machine (SLAM). We train a SLAM model using LAMOST spectra with APOGEE Data Release 16 (DR16) labels with $2800 lt T_{eff} lt 4500$K and $-2 lt [M/H] lt 0.5$ dex. The SLAM $T_{eff}$ is in agreement to within $sim 50$K compared to the previous study determined by APOGEE observation, and SLAM [M/H] agree within 0.12 dex compared to the APOGEE observation. We also set up a SLAM model trained by BT-Settl atmospheric model, with random uncertainties (in cross-validation) to 60K and agree within $sim 90$K compared to previous study.

The Fermi-LAT DR1 and DR2 4FGL catalogues feature more than 5000 gamma-ray sources of which about one fourth are not associated with already known objects, and approximately one third are associated with blazars of uncertain nature. We perform a thre e-category classification of the 4FGL DR1 and DR2 sources independently, using an ensemble of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to characterise them based on the likelihood of being a Pulsar (PSR), a BL Lac type blazar (BLL) or a Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar (FSRQ). We identify candidate PSR, BLL and FSRQ among the unassociated sources with approximate equipartition among the three categories and select ten classification outliers as potentially interesting for follow up studies.
Ischemic heart disease (IHD), particularly in its chronic stable form, is a subtle pathology due to its silent behavior before developing in unstable angina, myocardial infarction or sudden cardiac death. Machine learning techniques applied to parame ters extracted form heart rate variability (HRV) signal seem to be a valuable support in the early diagnosis of some cardiac diseases. However, so far, IHD patients were identified using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) applied to a limited number of HRV parameters and only to very few subjects. In this study, we used several linear and non-linear HRV parameters applied to ANNs, in order to confirm these results on a large cohort of 965 sample of subjects and to identify which features could discriminate IHD patients with high accuracy. By using principal component analysis and stepwise regression, we reduced the original 17 parameters to five, used as inputs, for a series of ANNs. The highest accuracy of 82% was achieved using meanRR, LFn, SD1, gender and age parameters and two hidden neurons.
Lightning casualties cause tremendous loss to life and property. However, very lately lightning has been considered as one of the major natural calamities which is now studied or monitored with proper instrumentation. The lightning characteristics ov er India have been studying by using daily data low resolution time series and monthly data high resolution monthly climatology. We have used ANN time series method (a neural network) to analyze the time series and defined which one will be the best predictor of lightning over India. The time series of lightning is output(dependent) and input (independent) are k-index, AOD, Cape etc. The Gaussian process regression, support vector machine, regression trees and linear regression defined the input variables. Which show approximately linear relation.
