A novel superconducting state under the broken time-reversal symmetry is studied in conventional phonon-mediated superconductors. By solving the Eliashberg equation self-consistently with the mass renormalization effect, it is found that the even- and odd-frequency components of the order parameter coexist in the bulk system as a consequence of the broken time-reversal symmetry. This finding would direct more attention to the odd-frequency pairing that affects physical quantities, especially in strong coupling superconductors.

We report the magnetic and superconducting properties of locally noncentrosymmetric SrPtAs obtained by muon-spin-rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements. Zero-field muSR reveals the occurrence of small spontaneous static magnetic fields with the onse t of superconductivity. This finding suggests that the superconducting state of SrPtAs breaks time-reversal symmetry. The superfluid density as determined by transverse field muSR is nearly flat approaching T = 0 K proving the absence of extended nodes in the gap function. By symmetry, several superconducting states supporting time-reversal symmetry breaking in SrPtAs are allowed. Out of these, a dominantly d + id (chiral d-wave) order parameter is most consistent with our experimental data.

We report muon spin relaxation measurements on the superconductor Sr2RuO4 that reveal the spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the transition temperature: the appearance of such a field indicates that the superconducting state i n this material is characterized by the breaking of time-reversal symmetry. These results, combined with other symmetry considerations, suggest that superconductivity in Sr2RuO4 is of p-wave (odd-parity) type, analogous to superfluid 3He.

We analyze the possible interaction-induced superconducting instabilities in noncentrosymmetric systems based on symmetries of the normal state. It is proven that pure electron-phonon coupling will always lead to a fully gapped superconductor that do es not break time-reversal symmetry and is topologically trivial. We show that topologically nontrivial behavior can be induced by magnetic doping without gapping out the resulting Kramers pair of Majorana edge modes. In case of superconductivity arising from the particle-hole fluctuations associated with a competing instability, the properties of the condensate crucially depend on the time-reversal behavior of the order parameter of the competing instability. When the order parameter preserves time-reversal symmetry, we obtain exactly the same properties as in case of phonons. If it is odd under time-reversal, the Cooper channel of the interaction will be fully repulsive leading to sign changes of the gap and making spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking possible. To discuss topological properties, we focus on fully gapped time-reversal symmetric superconductors and derive constraints on possible pairing states that yield necessary conditions for the emergence of topologically nontrivial superconductivity. These conditions might serve as a tool in the search for topological superconductors. We also discuss implications for oxides heterostructures and single-layer FeSe.
Among unconventional superconductors, Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ has become a benchmark for experimentation and theoretical analysis because its normal-state electronic structure is known with exceptional precision, and because of experimental evidence that its s uperconductivity has, very unusually, a spontaneous angular momentum, i.e. a chiral state. This hypothesis of chirality is however difficult to reconcile with recent evidence on the spin part of the order parameter. Measurements under uniaxial stress offer an ideal way to test for chirality, because under uniaxial stress the superconducting and chiral transitions are predicted to split, allowing the empirical signatures of each to be identified separately. Here, we report zerofield muon spin relaxation (ZF-$mu$SR) measurements on crystals placed under uniaxial stresses of up to 1.05 GPa. We report a clear stress-induced splitting between the onset temperatures of superconductivity and time-reversal symmetry breaking, consistent with qualitative expectations for chiral superconductivity. We also report the appearance of unexpected bulk magnetic order under a uniaxial stress of ~ 1.0 GPa in clean Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.
We consider a buckled quantum spin Hall insulator (QSHI), such as silicene, proximity-coupled to a conventional spin-singlet, s-wave superconductor. Even limiting the discussion to the disorder-robust s-wave pairing symmetry, we find both odd-frequen cy ($omega$), spin-singlet and spin-triplet pair amplitudes and where both preserve time-reversal symmetry. Our results show that there are two unrelated mechanisms generating these different odd-$omega$ pair amplitudes. The spin-singlet state is due to the strong inter-orbital processes present in the QSHI. It is exists generically at the edges of the QSHI, but also in the bulk in heavily doped regime if an electric field is applied. The spin-triplet state requires a finite gradient in the proximity-induced superconducting order along the edge, which we find is automatically generated at the atomic scale for armchair edges but not at zigzag edges. In combination these results make superconducting QSHIs a very exciting venue for investigating not only the existence of odd-$omega$ superconductivity, but also the interplay between different odd-$omega$ states.
