We present the analysis of new NIR, intermediate-resolution spectra of the gravitationally lensed galaxy the 8 oclock arc at z_sys = 2.7350 obtained with VLT/X-shooter. These rest-frame optical data, combined with HST and Spitzer images, provide very valuable information, which nicely complement our previous detailed rest-frame UV spectral analysis. From high-resolution HST images, we reconstruct the morphology of the arc in the source plane, and identify that the source is formed of two majors parts, the main galaxy component and a smaller blob separated by 1.2 kpc in projected distance. The blob, with a twice larger magnification factor, is resolved in the spectra. The multi-Gaussian fitting of detected nebular emission lines and the spectral energy distribution modeling of the available multi-wavelength photometry provide the census of gaseous and stellar dust extinctions, gas-phase metallicities, star-formation rates (SFRs), and stellar, gas, and dynamical masses for both the main galaxy and the blob. As a result, the 8 oclock arc shows a marginal trend for a more attenuated ionized gas than stars, and supports a dependence of the dust properties on the SFR. With a high specific star-formation rate, SSFR = 33+/-19 Gyr^{-1}, this lensed Lyman-break galaxy deviates from the mass-SFR relation, and is characterized by a young age of 40^{+25}_{-20} Myr and a high gas fraction of about 72%. The 8 oclock arc satisfies the fundamental mass, SFR, and metallicity relation, and favors that it holds up beyond z~2.5. We believe that the blob, with a gas mass M_gas = (2.2+/-0.9)x10^{9} Msun (one order of magnitude lower than the mass of the galaxy), a half-light radius r1/2 = 0.53+/-0.05 kpc, a star-formation rate SFR_Halpha = 33+/-19 Msun yr^{-1}, and in rotation around the main core of the galaxy, is one of these star-forming clumps commonly observed in z>1 star-forming galaxies. We present the first detailed analysis of the rest-frame UV spectrum of the gravitationally lensed Lyman break galaxy (LBG), the `8 oclock arc. The spectrum of the 8 oclock arc is rich in stellar and interstellar medium (ISM) features, and presents s everal similarities to the well-known MS1512-cB58 LBG. The stellar photospheric absorption lines allowed us to constrain the systemic redshift, z_sys = 2.7350+/-0.0003, of the galaxy, and derive its stellar metallicity, Z=0.82 Z_sol. With a total stellar mass of ~4.2x10^{11} M_sol, the 8 oclock arc agrees with the mass-metallicity relation found for z>2 star-forming galaxies. The 31 ISM absorption lines detected led to the abundance measurements of 9 elements. The metallicity of the ISM, Z=0.65 Z_sol (Si), is very comparable to the metallicity of stars and ionized gas, and suggests that the ISM of the 8 oclock arc has been rapidly polluted and enriched by ejecta of OB stars. The ISM lines extend over ~1000 km/s and have their peak optical depth blueshifted relative to the stars, implying gas outflows of about -120 km/s. The Ly-alpha line is dominated by a damped absorption profile on top of which is superposed a weak emission, redshifted relative to the ISM lines by about +690 km/s and resulting from multiply backscattered Ly-alpha photons emitted in the HII region surrounded by the cold, expanding ISM shell. A homogeneous spherical radiation transfer shell model with a constant outflow velocity, determined by the observations, is able to reproduce the observed Ly-alpha line profile and dust content. These results fully support the scenario proposed earlier, where the diversity of Ly-alpha line profiles in LBGs and Ly-alpha emitters, from absorption to emission, is mostly due to variations of HI column density and dust content (abridged).
We report observations of three gravitationally lensed supernovae (SNe) in the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) Multi-Cycle Treasury program. These objects, SN CLO12Car (z = 1.28), SN CLN12Did (z = 0.85), and SN CLA11Tib (z = 1.14), are located behind three different clusters, MACSJ1720.2+3536 (z = 0.391), RXJ1532.9+3021 (z = 0.345), and Abell 383 (z = 0.187), respectively. Each SN was detected in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical and infrared images. Based on photometric classification, we find that SNe CLO12Car and CLN12Did are likely to be Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), while the classification of SN CLA11Tib is inconclusive. Using multi-color light-curve fits to determine a standardized SN Ia luminosity distance, we infer that SN CLO12Car was approximately 1.0 +/- 0.2 mag brighter than field SNe Ia at a similar redshift and ascribe this to gravitational lens magnification. Similarly, SN CLN12Did is approximately 0.2 +/- 0.2 mag brighter than field SNe Ia. We derive independent estimates of the predicted magnification from CLASH strong+weak lensing maps of the clusters: 0.83 +/- 0.16 mag for SN CLO12Car, 0.28 +/- 0.08 mag for SN CLN12Did, and 0.43 +/- 0.11 mag for SN CLA11Tib. The two SNe Ia provide a new test of the cluster lens model predictions: we find that the magnifications based on the SN Ia brightness and those predicted by the lens maps are consistent. Our results herald the promise of future observations of samples of cluster-lensed SNe Ia (from the ground or space) to help illuminate the dark-matter distribution in clusters of galaxies, through the direct determination of absolute magnifications.

We report the detection of the Paschen-alpha emission line in the z=2.515 galaxy SMM J163554.2+661225 using Spitzer spectroscopy. SMM J163554.2+661225 is a sub-millimeter-selected infrared (IR)-luminous galaxy maintaining a high star-formation rate ( SFR), with no evidence of an AGN from optical or infrared spectroscopy, nor X-ray emission. This galaxy is lensed gravitationally by the cluster Abell 2218, making it accessible to Spitzer spectroscopy. Correcting for nebular extinction derived from the H-alpha and Pa-alpha lines, the dust-corrected luminosity is L(Pa-alpha) = (2.57+/-0.43) x 10^43 erg s^-1, which corresponds to an ionization rate, Q = (1.6+/-0.3) x 10^55 photons s^-1. The instantaneous SFR is 171+/-28 solar masses per year, assuming a Salpeter-like initial mass function. The total IR luminosity derived using 70, 450, and 850 micron data is L(IR) = (5-10) x 10^11 solar luminosities, corrected for gravitational lensing. This corresponds to a SFR=90-180 solar masses per year, where the upper range is consistent with that derived from the Paschen-alpha luminosity. While the L(8 micron) / L(Pa-alpha) ratio is consistent with the extrapolated relation observed in local galaxies and star-forming regions, the rest-frame 24 micron luminosity is significantly lower with respect to local galaxies of comparable Paschen-alpha luminosity. Thus, SMM J163554.2+661225 arguably lacks a warmer dust component (T ~ 70 K), which is associated with deeply embedded star formation, and which contrasts with local galaxies with comparable SFRs. Rather, the starburst is consistent with star-forming local galaxies with intrinsic luminosities, L(IR) ~ 10^10 solar luminosities, but scaled-up by a factor of 10-100.
Using the Boolardy Engineering Test Array of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP BETA), we have carried out the first $z = 0 - 1$ survey for HI and OH absorption towards the gravitationally lensed quasars PKSB1830$-$211 and MGJ041 4$+$0534. Although we detected all previously reported intervening systems towards PKSB1830$-$211, in the case of MGJ0414+0534 three systems were not found, indicating that the original identifications may have been confused with radio frequency interference. Given the sensitivity of our data, we find that our detection yield is consistent with the expected frequency of intervening HI systems estimated from previous surveys for 21-cm emission in nearby galaxies and $z sim 3$ damped Lyman $alpha$ absorbers. We find spectral variability in the $z = 0.886$ face-on spiral galaxy towards PKSB1830$-$211, from observations undertaken with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope in 1997/1998 and ASKAP BETA in 2014/2015. The HI equivalent width varies by a few per cent over approximately yearly time-scales. This long-term spectral variability is correlated between the north-east and south-west images of the core, and with the total flux density of the source, implying that it is observationally coupled to intrinsic changes in the quasar. The absence of any detectable variability in the ratio of HI associated with the two core images is in stark contrast to the behaviour previously seen in the molecular lines. We therefore infer that coherent opaque HI structures in this galaxy are larger than the parsec-scale molecular clouds found at mm-wavelengths.
PKS 1830-211 is a known macrolensed quasar located at a redshift of z=2.5. Its high-energy gamma-ray emission has been detected with the Fermi-LAT instrument and evidence for lensing was obtained by several authors from its high-energy data. Observ ations of PKS 1830-211 were taken with the H.E.S.S. array of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes in August 2014, following a flare alert by the Fermi- LAT collaboration. The H.E.S.S observations were aimed at detecting a gamma-ray flare delayed by 20-27 days from the alert flare, as expected from observations at other wavelengths. More than twelve hours of good quality data were taken with an analysis threshold of $sim67$ GeV. The significance of a potential signal is computed as a function of the date as well as the average significance over the whole period. Data are compared to simultaneous observations by Fermi-LAT. No photon excess or significant signal is detected. An upper limit on PKS 1830-211 flux above 67 GeV is computed and compared to the extrapolation of the Fermi-LAT flare spectrum.
