The superfluid/normal-fluid interface of liquid 4He is investigated in gravity on earth where a small heat current Q flows vertically upward or downward. We present a local space- and time-dependent renormalization-group (RG) calculation based on model F which describes the dynamic critical effects for temperatures T near the superfluid transition T_lambda. The model-F equations are rewritten in a dimensionless renormalized form and solved numerically as partial differential equations. Perturbative corrections are included for the spatially inhomogeneous system within a self-consistent one-loop approximation. The RG flow parameter is determined locally as a function of space and time by a constraint equation which is solved by a Newton iteration. As a result we obtain the temperature profile of the interface. Furthermore we calculate the average order parameter <psi>, the correlation length xi, the specific heat C_Q and the thermal resistivity rho_T where we observe a rounding of the critical singularity by the gravity and the heat current. We compare the thermal resistivity with an experiment and find good qualitative agreement. Moreover we discuss our previous approach for larger heat currents and the self-organized critical state and show that our theory agrees with recent experiments in this latter regime.

It is shown that the interface model introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 2369 (2001) violates fundamental symmetry requirements for vanishing gravitational acceleration $g$, so that its results cannot be applied to critical properties of interfaces for $gto 0$.

We have carried out a study of the momentum distribution and of the spectrum of elementary excitations of liquid $^4$He across the normal-superfluid transition temperature, using the path integral Monte Carlo method. Our results for the momentum dist ribution in the superfluid regime show that a kink is present in the range of momenta corresponding to the roton excitation. This effect disappears when crossing the transition temperature to the normal fluid, in a behavior currently unexplained by theory.
Previous single-pulse extreme ultraviolet and X-ray coherent diffraction studies revealed that superfluid 4He droplets obtained in free jet expansion acquire sizable angular momentum, resulting in significant centrifugal distortion. Similar experimen ts with normal fluid 3He droplets may help elucidating the origin of the of the large degree of rotational excitation and highlight similarities and differences of dynamics in normal and superfluid droplets. Here, we present the first comparison of the shapes of isolated 3He and 4He droplets following expansion of the corresponding fluids in vacuum at temperatures as low as ~ 2 K. Large 3He and 4He droplets with average radii of ~160 nm and ~350 nm, respectively, were produced. We find that the majority of the 3He droplets in the beam correspond to rotating oblate spheroids with reduced average angular momentum ($Lambda$) and reduced angular velocities ($Omega$) similar to that of 4He droplets. Given the different physical nature of 3He and 4He, this similarity in $Lambda$ and $Omega$ may be surprising and suggest that similar mechanisms induce rotation regardless of the isotope. We hypothesized that the observed distribution of droplet sizes and angular momenta stem from processes in the dense region close to the nozzle. In this region, the significant velocity spread and collisions between the droplets induce excessive rotation followed by droplet fission. The process may repeat itself several times before the droplets enter the collision-fee high vacuum region further downstream.
We study critical point finite-size effects on the behavior of susceptibility of a film placed in the Earths gravitational field. The fluid-fluid and substrate-fluid interactions are characterized by van der Waals-type power law tails, and the bounda ry conditions are consistent with bounding surfaces that strongly prefer the liquid phase of the system. Specific predictions are made with respect to the behavior of $^3$He and $^4$He films in the vicinity of their respective liquid-gas critical points. We find that for all film thicknesses of current experimental interest the combination of van der Waals interactions and gravity leads to substantial deviations from the behavior predicted by models in which all interatomic forces are very short ranged and gravity is absent. In the case of a completely short-ranged system exact mean-field analytical expressions are derived, within the continuum approach, for the behavior of both the local and the total susceptibilities.
High-resolution neutron resonance spin-echo measurements of superfluid 4He show that the roton energy does not have the same temperature dependence as the inverse lifetime. Diagrammatic analysis attributes this to the interaction of rotons with therm ally excited phonons via both four- and three-particle processes, the latter being allowed by the broken gauge symmetry of the Bose condensate. The distinct temperature dependence of the roton energy at low temperatures suggests that the net roton-phonon interaction is repulsive.
