The temperature dependence of the Cs clock transition frequency in a vapor cell filled with Ne buffer gas has been measured. The experimental setup is based on the coherent population trapping (CPT) technique and a temporal Ramsey interrogation allowing a high resolution. A quadratic dependence of the frequency shift is shown. The temperature of the shift cancellation is evaluated. The actual Ne pressure in the cell is determined from the frequency shift of the 895nm optical transition. We can then determine the Cs-Ne collisional temperature coefficients of the clock frequency. These results can be useful for vapor cell clocks and especially for future micro-clocks.

We report on a series of 42 measurements of the transition frequency of the 429~THz (5s$^2$)~$^1$S$_0$--(5s5p)~$^3$P$_0$ line in $^{87}$Sr taken over three years from 2017 to 2019. They have been performed at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) between the laboratory strontium lattice clock and the primary caesium fountain clocks CSF1 and CSF2. The length of each individual measurement run has been extended by use of a hydrogen maser as flywheel to improve the statistical uncertainty given by the Cs clocks. We determine an averaged transition frequency of $429:228:004:229:873.00(0.07)$~Hz with $1.5times10^{-16}$ fractional uncertainty, at the limit of the current realization of the unit hertz. Analysis of the data provides an improved limit on the coupling of the gravitational potential of the Sun to the proton--electron mass ratio $mu$, and confirms the limits on its temporal drift.
Precision saturation spectroscopy of the $^{88}{rm Sr} ^1S_0-^3P_1$ is performed in a vapor cell filled with various rare gas including He, Ne, Ar, and Xe. By continuously calibrating the absolute frequency of the probe laser, buffer gas induced coll ision shifts of $sim $kHz are detected with gas pressure of 1-20 mTorr. Helium gave the largest fractional shift of $1.6 times 10^{-9} {rm Torr}^{-1}$. Comparing with a simple impact calculation and a Doppler-limited experiment of Holtgrave and Wolf [Phys. Rev. A {bf 72}, 012711 (2005)], our results show larger broadening and smaller shifting coefficient, indicating effective atomic loss due to velocity changing collisions. The applicability of the result to the $^1S_0-^3P_0$ optical lattice clock transition is also discussed.
We report on a theoretical study and experimental characterization of coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances in buffer gas-filled vapor cells with push-pull optical pumping (PPOP) on Cs D1 line. We point out that the push-pull interaction sche me is identical to the so-called lin per lin polarization scheme. Expressions of the relevant dark states, as well as of absorption, are reported. The experimental setup is based on the combination of a distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser, a pigtailed intensity Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator (MZ EOM) for optical sidebands generation and a Michelson-like interferometer. A microwave technique to stabilize the transfer function operating point of the MZ EOM is implemented for proper operation. A CPT resonance contrast as high as 78% is reported in a cm-scale cell for the magnetic-field insensitive clock transition. The impact of the laser intensity on the CPT clock signal key parameters (linewidth - contrast - linewidth/contrast ratio) is reported for three different cells with various dimensions and buffer gas contents. The potential of the PPOP technique for the development of high-performance atomic vapor cell clocks is discussed.
We present the first characterization of the spectral properties of superradiant light emitted from the ultra-narrow, 1 mHz linewidth optical clock transition in an ensemble of cold $^{87}$Sr atoms. Such a light source has been proposed as a next-gen eration active atomic frequency reference, with the potential to enable high-precision optical frequency references to be used outside laboratory environments. By comparing the frequency of our superradiant source to that of a state-of-the-art cavity-stabilized laser and optical lattice clock, we observe a fractional Allan deviation of $6.7(1)times 10^{-16}$ at 1 second of averaging, establish absolute accuracy at the 2 Hz ($4times 10^{-15}$ fractional frequency) level, and demonstrate insensitivity to key environmental perturbations.
We report on the demonstration of Doppler-free polarization spectroscopy of the D2 line of 6Li atoms. Counterintuitively, the presence of an Ar buffer gas, in a certain pressure range, causes a drastic enhancement of the polarization rotation signal. The observed dependence of the signal amplitude on the Ar buffer pressure and the pump laser power is reproduced by calculations based on simple rate equations. We performed stable laser frequency locking using a dispersion signal obtained by polarization spectroscopy for laser cooling of 6Li atoms.
