Fast kicker magnets are used to inject beam into and eject beam out of the CERN accelerator rings. These kickers are generally transmission line type magnets with a rectangular shaped aperture through which the beam passes. Unless special precautions are taken the impedance of the yoke can provoke significant beam induced heating, especially for high intensities. In addition the impedance may contribute to beam instabilities. The results of longitudinal and transverse impedance measurements, for various kicker magnets, are presented and compared with analytical calculations: in addition predictions from a numerical analysis are discussed.

Each stage of an accelerator system has a limited dynamic range and therefore a chain of stages is required to reach high energy. A combination of septa and kicker magnets is frequently used to inject and extract beam from each stage. The kicker magn ets typically produce rectangular field pulses with fast rise- and/or fall-times, however, the field strength is relatively low. To compensate for their relatively low field strength, the kicker magnets are generally combined with electromagnetic septa. The septa provide relatively strong field strength but are either DC or slow pulsed. This paper discusses injection and extraction systems with particular emphasis on the hardware required for the kicker magnet.
Coaxial wire measurements have provided a simple and effective way to measure the beam coupling impedance of accelerator structures for a number of years. It has been known how to measure the longitudinal and dipolar transverse impedance using one an d two wires for some time. Recently the ability to measure the quadrupolar impedance of structures exhibiting top/bottom and left/right symmetry has been demonstrated. A method for measuring the beam coupling impedance of asymmetric structures using displaced single wires and two wire measurements is proposed. Simulations of the measurement system are presented with further work proposed.
During the 2011 run of the LHC there was a significant measured temperature increase in the LHC Injection Kicker Magnets (MKI) during operation with 50ns bunch spacing. This was due to increased beam-induced heating of the magnet due to beam impedanc e. Due to concerns about future heating with the increased total intensity to nominal and ultimate luminosities a review of the impedance reduction techniques within the magnet was required. A number of new beam screen designs are proposed and their impedance evaluated. Heating estimates are also given with a particular attention paid to future intensity upgrades to ultimate parameters.
The fast extraction kicker system is one of the most important accelerator components, whose inner structure will be the main source of the impedance in the RCS. It is necessary to understand the kicker impedance before its installation into the tunn el. The conventional and improved wire methods are employed for the benchmarking impedance measurement results. The simulation and measurements confirm that the window-frame ferrite geometry and the end plate are the important structures causing the coupling impedance. The total impedance of the eight modules systems is determined by the scaling law from the measurement and the impedance measurement of the kicker system is summarized.

A double kicker system which extracts the ultra-low emittance multi-bunch beam stably from ATF damping ring was developed. The performance of the system was studied comparing an orbit jitter with single kicker extraction in single bunch mode. The pos ition jitter reduction was estimated from the analysis of the extraction orbits. The reduction was confirmed for the double kicker system within a resolution of BPMs. More precise tuning of the system with a wire scanner has been tried by changing a beta function at the second kicker to get more reduction of kick angle jitter. The results of these studies are described in detail.
