We present a new optical arrangement which allows to avoid the broadening by finite aperture in Brillouin spectroscopy. In this system, all the rays scattered at the same angle by the whole scattering volume are collected on a single pixel of the area detector. This allows to use large collection angles, increasing the luminosity without lowering the accuracy of the frequency-shift and linewidth measurements. Several results of experimental checks are provided, showing the efficiency of the device.

Raman micro-spectroscopy is well suited for studying a variety of properties and has been applied to wide- ranging areas. Combined with tuneable temperature, Raman spectra can offer even more insights into the properties of materials. However, previo us designs of variable temperature Raman microscopes have made it extremely challenging to measure samples with low signal levels due to thermal and positional instability as well as low collection efficiencies. Thus, contemporary Raman microscope has found limited applicability to probing the subtle physics involved in phase transitions and hysteresis. This paper describes a new design of a closed-cycle, Raman microscope with full polarization rotation. High collection efficiency, thermal and mechanical stability are ensured by both deliberate optical, cryogenic, and mechanical design. Measurements on two samples, Bi2Se3 and V2O3, which are known as challenging due to low thermal conductivities, low signal levels and/or hysteretic effects, are measured with previously undemonstrated temperature resolution.
The acoustic modes of diamond not only are of profound significance for studying its thermal conductivity, mechanical properties and optical properties, but also play a determined role in the performance of high-frequency and high-power acoustic wave devices. Here we report the bulk acoustic waves (BAWs) and surface acoustic waves (SAWs) of single crystal diamond by using the angle-resolved Brillouin light scattering (BLS) spectroscopy. We identify two high-velocity surface skimming bulk waves, with sound velocities of 1.277x10^6 and 1.727x10^6 cm/s, respectively. Furthermore, we conduct the relationship among the refractive index, incident angle and the velocities of BAWs propagating along an arbitrary direction. Our results may provide a valuable reference for fundamental researches and devices engineering in the community of diamond-based acoustic study.
An additional value of the Avogadro constant was obtained by counting the atoms in isotopically enriched Si spheres. With respect to the previous determination, the spheres were etched and repolished to eliminate metal contaminations and to improve t he roundness. In addition, all the input quantities -- molar mass, lattice parameter, mass, and volume -- were remeasured aiming at a smaller uncertainty. In order to make the values given Refs. 1 and 2 usable for a least squares adjustment, we report about the estimate of their correlation.
We describe a method of white-beam inelastic neutron scattering for improved measurement efficiency. The method consists of matrix inversion and selective extraction. The former is to resolve each incident energy component from the white-beam data, a nd the latter eliminates contamination by elastic components, which produce strong backgrounds that otherwise obfuscate the inelastic scattering components. In this method, the optimal experimental condition to obtain high efficiency will strongly depend on the specific aim of the individual experiments.

High-resolution Brillouin scattering is used to achieve 3-dimensional maps of the longitudinal acoustic mode frequency shift in soda-lime silicate glasses subject to Vickers indentations. Assuming that residual stress-induced effects are simply propo rtional to density changes, residual densification fields are obtained. The density gradient is nearly isotropic, confirming earlier optical observations made on a similar glass. The results show that Brillouin micro-spectroscopy opens the way to a fully quantitative comparison of experimental data with predictions of mechanical models for the identification of a constitutive law.
