A process of Central Exclusive $pi^+pi^-$ production in proton-proton collisions and its theoretical description is presented. A possibility of its measurement, during the special low luminosity LHC runs, with the help of the ATLAS central detector for measuring pions and the ALFA stations for tagging the scattered protons is studied. A visible cross section is estimated to be 21 $mu$b for $sqrt{s}=7$ TeV, which gives over 2000 events for 100 $mu$b$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Differential distributions in pion pseudorapidities, pion and proton transverse momenta as well as $pi^+pi^-$ invariant mass are shown and discussed.

Exclusive photoproduction of $rho^0(770)$ mesons is studied using the H1 detector at the $ep$ collider HERA. A sample of about 900000 events is used to measure single- and double-differential cross sections for the reaction $gamma p to pi^{+}pi^{-}Y$ . Reactions where the proton stays intact (${m_Y{=}m_p}$) are statistically separated from those where the proton dissociates to a low-mass hadronic system ($m_p{<}m_Y{<}10$ GeV). The double-differential cross sections are measured as a function of the invariant mass $m_{pipi}$ of the decay pions and the squared $4$-momentum transfer $t$ at the proton vertex. The measurements are presented in various bins of the photon-proton collision energy $W_{gamma p}$. The phase space restrictions are $0.5 < m_{pipi} < 2.2$ GeV, ${vert tvert < 1.5}$ GeV${}^2$, and ${20 < W_{gamma p} < 80}$ GeV. Cross section measurements are presented for both elastic and proton-dissociative scattering. The observed cross section dependencies are described by analytic functions. Parametrising the $m_{pipi}$ dependence with resonant and non-resonant contributions added at the amplitude level leads to a measurement of the $rho^{0}(770)$ meson mass and width at $m_rho = 770.8 {}^{+2.6}_{-2.7}$ (tot) MeV and $Gamma_rho = 151.3 {}^{+2.7}_{-3.6}$ (tot) MeV, respectively. The model is used to extract the $rho^0(770)$ contribution to the $pi^{+}pi^{-}$ cross sections and measure it as a function of $t$ and $W_{gamma p}$. In a Regge asymptotic limit in which one Regge trajectory $alpha(t)$ dominates, the intercept $alpha(t{=}0) = 1.0654 {}^{+0.0098}_{-0.0067}$ (tot) and the slope $alpha^prime(t{=}0) = 0.233 {}^{+0.067 }_{-0.074 }$ (tot) GeV${}^{-2}$ of the $t$ dependence are extracted for the case $m_Y{=}m_p$.
The reaction pp->pppi0pi0 has been investigated at a beam energy of 1.4 GeV using the WASA-at-COSY facility. The total cross section is found to be (324 +- 21_systematic +- 58_normalization) mub. In order to to study the production mechanism, differe ntial kinematical distributions have been evaluated. The differential distributions indicate that both initial state protons are excited into intermediate Delta(1232) resonances, each decaying into a proton and a single pion, thereby producing the pion pair in the final state. No significant contribution of the Roper resonance N*(1440) via its decay into a proton and two pions is found
Exclusive dilepton production occurs with high cross section in gamma-mediated processes at the LHC. The pure QED process $gammagammarightarrowell^+ell^-$ provides the conditions to study particle production with masses at the electroweak scale. By t agging the leading proton from the hard interaction, the Precision Proton Spectrometer (PPS) provides an increased sensitivity to selecting exclusive processes. PPS is a detector system to add tracking and timing information at approximately 210~m from the interaction point around the CMS detector. It is designed to operate at high luminosity with up to 50 interactions per 25~ns bunch crossing to perform measurements of e.g. the quartic gauge couplings and search for rare exclusive processes. Since 2016, PPS has been taking data in normal high-luminosity proton-proton LHC collisions. Exclusive dilepton production with proton tagging, the first results obtained with PPS, and the status of the ongoing program are discussed.

The exclusive electroproduction of $pi^+$ above the resonance region was studied using the $rm{CEBAF}$ Large Acceptance Spectrometer ($rm{CLAS}$) at Jefferson Laboratory by scattering a 6 GeV continuous electron beam off a hydrogen target. The large acceptance and good resolution of $rm{CLAS}$, together with the high luminosity, allowed us to measure the cross section for the $gamma^* p to n pi^+$ process in 140 ($Q^2$, $x_B$, $t$) bins: $0.16<x_B<0.58$, 1.6 GeV$^2<$$Q^2$$<4.5$ GeV$^2$ and 0.1 GeV$^2<$$-t$$<5.3$ GeV$^2$. For most bins, the statistical accuracy is on the order of a few percent. Differential cross sections are compared to two theoretical models, based either on hadronic (Regge phenomenology) or on partonic (handbag diagram) degrees of freedom. Both can describe the gross features of the data reasonably well, but differ strongly in their ingredients. If the handbag approach can be validated in this kinematical region, our data contain the interesting potential to experimentally access transversity Generalized Parton Distributions.
The COMPASS collaboration has collected the currently largest data set on diffractively produced $pi^-pi^-pi^+$ final states using a negative pion beam of 190 GeV/c momentum impinging on a stationary proton target. This data set allows for a systemat ic partial-wave analysis in 100 bins of three-pion mass, $0.5 < m_{3pi} < 2.5$ GeV/c$^2$ , and in 11 bins of the reduced four-momentum transfer squared, $0.1 < t < 1.0$ (GeV/c)$^2$ . This two-dimensional analysis offers sensitivity to genuine one-step resonance production, i.e. the production of a state followed by its decay, as well as to more complex dynamical effects in nonresonant $3pi$ production. In this paper, we present detailed studies on selected $3pi$ partial waves with $J^{PC} = 0^{-+}$, $1^{++}$, $2^{-+}$, $2^{++}$, and $4^{++}$. In these waves, we observe the well-known ground-state mesons as well as a new narrow axial-vector meson $a_1(1420)$ decaying into $f_0(980) pi$. In addition, we present the results of a novel method to extract the amplitude of the $pi^-pi^+$ subsystem with $I^{G}J^{PC} = 0^+ 0^{++}$ in various partial waves from the $pi^-pi^-pi^+$ data. Evidence is found for correlation of the $f_0(980)$ and $f_0(1500)$ appearing as intermediate $pi^- pi^+$ isobars in the decay of the known $pi(1800)$ and $pi_2(1880)$.
