In a multi-layer electronic system, stacking order provides a rarely-explored degree of freedom for tuning its electronic properties. Here we demonstrate the dramatically different transport properties in trilayer graphene (TLG) with different stacking orders. At the Dirac point, ABA-stacked TLG remains metallic while the ABC counterpart becomes insulating. The latter exhibits a gap-like dI/dV characteristics at low temperature and thermally activated conduction at higher temperatures, indicating an intrinsic gap ~6 meV. In magnetic fields, in addition to an insulating state at filling factor { u}=0, ABC TLG exhibits quantum Hall plateaus at { u}=-30, pm 18, pm 9, each of which splits into 3 branches at higher fields. Such splittings are signatures of the Lifshitz transition induced by trigonal warping, found only in ABC TLG, and in semi-quantitative agreement with theory. Our results underscore the rich interaction-induced phenomena in trilayer graphene with different stacking orders, and its potential towards electronic applications.

We report markedly different transport properties of ABA- and ABC-stacked trilayer graphenes. Our experiments in double-gated trilayer devices provide evidence that a perpendicular electric field opens an energy gap in the ABC trilayer, while it caus es the increase of a band overlap in the ABA trilayer. In a perpendicular magnetic field, the ABA trilayer develops quantum Hall plateaus at filling factors of u = 2, 4, 6... with a step of Delta u = 2, whereas the inversion symmetric ABC trilayer exhibits plateaus at u = 6 and 10 with 4-fold spin and valley degeneracy.
The stacking order degree of freedom in trilayer graphene plays a critical role in determining the existence of an electric field tunable band gap. We present spatially-resolved tunneling spectroscopy measurements of dual gated Bernal (ABA) and rhomb ohedral (ABC) stacked trilayer graphene devices. We demonstrate that while ABA trilayer graphene remains metallic, ABC trilayer graphene exhibits a widely tunable band gap as a function of electric field. However, we find that charged impurities in the underlying substrate cause substantial spatial fluctuation of the gap size. Our work elucidates the microscopic behavior of trilayer graphene and its consequences for macroscopic devices.
Studies on two-dimensional electron systems in a strong magnetic field first revealed the quantum Hall (QH) effect, a topological state of matter featuring a finite Chern number (C) and chiral edge states. Haldane later theorized that Chern insulator s with integer QH effects could appear in lattice models with complex hopping parameters even at zero magnetic field. The ABC-trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (TLG/hBN) moire superlattice provides an attractive platform to explore Chern insulators because it features nearly flat moire minibands with a valley-dependent electrically tunable Chern number. Here we report the experimental observation of a correlated Chern insulator in a TLG/hBN moire superlattice. We show that reversing the direction of the applied vertical electric field switches TLG/hBNs moire minibands between zero and finite Chern numbers, as revealed by dramatic changes in magneto-transport behavior. For topological hole minibands tuned to have a finite Chern number, we focus on 1/4 filling, corresponding to one hole per moire unit cell. The Hall resistance is well quantized at h/2e2, i.e. C = 2, for |B| > 0.4 T. The correlated Chern insulator is ferromagnetic, exhibiting significant magnetic hysteresis and a large anomalous Hall signal at zero magnetic field. Our discovery of a C = 2 Chern insulator at zero magnetic field should open up exciting opportunities for discovering novel correlated topological states, possibly with novel topological excitations, in nearly flat and topologically nontrivial moire minibands.
Starting with twisted bilayer graphene, graphene-based moire materials have recently been established as a new platform for studying strong electron correlations. In this paper, we study twisted graphene monolayers on trilayer graphene and demonstrat e that this system can host flat bands when the twist angle is close to the magic-angle of 1.16$^circ$. When monolayer graphene is twisted on ABA trilayer graphene, the flat bands are not isolated, but are intersected by a Dirac cone with a large Fermi velocity. In contrast, graphene twisted on ABC trilayer graphene (denoted AtABC) exhibits a gap between flat and remote bands. Since ABC trilayer graphene and twisted bilayer graphene are known to host broken-symmetry phases, we further investigate the ostensibly similar magic angle AtABC system. We study the effect of electron-electron interactions in AtABC using both Hartree theory and an atomic Hubbard theory to calculate the magnetic phase diagram as a function of doping, twist angle, and perpendicular electric field. Our analysis reveals a rich variety of magnetic orderings, including ferromagnetism and ferrimagnetism, and demonstrates that a perpendicular electric field makes AtABC more susceptible to magnetic ordering.
We formulate the chiral decomposition rules that govern the electronic structure of a broad family of twisted $N+M$ multilayer graphene configurations that combine arbitrary stacking order and a mutual twist. We show that at the magic angle in the ch iral limit the low-energy bands of such systems are composed of chiral pseudospin doublets which are energetically entangled with two flat bands per valley induced by the moire superlattice potential. The analytic analysis is supported by explicit numerical calculations based on realistic parameterization. We further show that applying vertical displacement fields can open up energy gaps between the pseudospin doublets and the two flat bands, such that the flat bands may carry nonzero valley Chern numbers. These results provide guidelines for the rational design of various topological and correlated states in generic twisted graphene multilayers.
