Low energy excitation of surface states of a three-dimensional topological insulator (3DTI) can be described by Dirac fermions. By using a tight-binding model, the transport properties of the surface states in a uniform magnetic field is investigated. It is found that chiral surface states parallel to the magnetic field are responsible to the quantized Hall (QH) conductance $(2n+1)frac{e^2}{h}$ multiplied by the number of Dirac cones. Due to the two-dimension (2D) nature of the surface states, the robustness of the QH conductance against impurity scattering is determined by the oddness and evenness of the Dirac cone number. An experimental setup for transport measurement is proposed.

We propose a surface-edge state theory for half quantized Hall conductance of surface states in topological insulators. The gap opening of a single Dirac cone for the surface states in a weak magnetic field is demonstrated. We find a new surface stat e resides on the surface edges and carries chiral edge current, resulting in a half-quantized Hall conductance in a four-terminal setup. We also give a physical interpretation of the half quantized conductance by showing that this state is the product of splitting of a boundary bound state of massive Dirac fermions which carries a conductance quantum.

In this work, we propose a ferromagnetic Bi$_2$Se$_3$ as a candidate to hold the coexistence of Weyl- and nodal-line semimetal phases, which breaks the time reversal symmetry. We demonstrate that the type-I Weyl semimetal phase, type-I-, type-II- a nd their hybrid nodal-line semimetal phases can arise by tuning the Zeeman exchange field strength and the Fermi velocity. Their topological responses under U(1) gauge field are also discussed. Our results raise a new way for realizing Weyl and nodal-line semimetals and will be helpful in understanding the topological transport phenomena in three-dimensional material systems.
We use the bulk Hamiltonian for a three-dimensional topological insulator such as $rm Bi_2 Se_3$ to study the states which appear on its various surfaces and along the edge between two surfaces. We use both analytical methods based on the surface Ham iltonians (which are derived from the bulk Hamiltonian) and numerical methods based on a lattice discretization of the bulk Hamiltonian. We find that the application of a potential along an edge can give rise to states localized at that edge. These states have an unusual energy-momentum dispersion which can be controlled by applying a potential along the edge; in particular, the velocity of these states can be tuned to zero. The scattering across the edge is studied as a function of the edge potential. We show that a magnetic field in a particular direction can also give rise to zero energy states on certain edges. We point out possible experimental ways of looking for the various edge states.
The energy spectrum of massless Dirac fermions in graphene under two dimensional periodic magnetic modulation having square lattice symmetry is calculated. We show that the translation symmetry of the problem is similar to that of the Hofstadter or T KNN problem and in the weak field limit the tight binding energy eigenvalue equation is indeed given by Harper Hofstadter hamiltonian. We show that due to its magnetic translational symmetry the Hall conductivity can be identified as a topological invariant and hence quantized. We thus extend the idea of Quantum Hall Effect to magnetically modulated two dimensional electron system. Finally we indicate possible experimental systems where this may be verified.

The electronic orders in magnetic and dielectric materials form the domains with different signs of order parameters. The control of configuration and motion of the domain walls (DWs) enables gigantic, nonvolatile responses against minute external fi elds, forming the bases of contemporary electronics. As an extension of the DW function concept, we realize the one-dimensional quantized conduction on the magnetic DWs of a topological insulator (TI). The DW of a magnetic TI is predicted to host the chiral edge state (CES) of dissipation-less nature when each magnetic domain is in the quantum anomalous Hall state. We design and fabricate the magnetic domains in a magnetic TI film with the tip of the magnetic force microscope, and clearly prove the existence of the chiral one-dimensional edge conduction along the prescribed DWs. The proof-of-concept devices based on the reconfigurable CES and Landauer-Buttiker formalism are exemplified for multiple-domain configurations with the well-defined DW channels.
