We report x-ray diffraction, resistivity, thermopower, and magnetization of Sr3ErMn4-xGaxO10.5-d, in which A-site ordered tetragonal phase appears above x=1, and reveal that the system exhibits typical properties seen in the antiferromagnetic insulator with Mn3+. We succeed in preparing both A-site ordered and disordered phases for x=1 in different preparation conditions, and observe a significant decrease of the resistivity in the disordered phase. We discuss possible origins of the decrease focusing on the dimensionality and the disordered effect.

Rare earth perovskite cobaltites are increasingly recognized as materials of importance due to rich physics and chemistry in their ordered-disordered structure for the same composition. Apart from colossal magnetoresistance effect, like manganites, t he different forms of cobaltites exhibit interesting phenomena including spin, charge and orbital ordering, electronic phase separation, insulator-metal transition, large thermoelectric power at low temperature. Moreover, the cobaltites which display colossal magnetoresistance effect could be used as read heads in magnetic data storage and also in other applications depending upon their particular properties. The A-site ordereddisordered cobaltites exhibit ferromagnetism and metal-insulator transitions as well as other properties depending on the composition, size of A-site cations and various external factors such as pressure, temperature, magnetic field etc. Ordered cobaltites, having a 112-type layered structure, are also reported to have an effectively stronger electron coupling due to layered A-site cationic ordering. Most importantly for the present article we focus on La-Ba-Co-O based ordered-disordered perovskite phases, which exhibit interesting magnetic and electron transport properties with ferromagnetic transition, TC ~ 177K, and it being the first member of lanthanide series. Zener double exchange mechanism considered to be crucial for understanding basic physics of the ferromagneticmetallic phase, yet does not explain clearly the insulating-type phase. In terms of electron transport the ferromagnetic-metallic or insulating/semiconducting states have been discussed in the present article with different types of hopping model.
Ba2CoWO6 (BCoW) has been synthesized in polycrystalline form by solid state reaction at 1200C. Structural characterization of the compound was done through X-ray diffraction (XRD) followed by Rietveld analysis of the XRD pattern. The crystal structur e is cubic, space group Fm-3m (No 225) with the lattice parameter, a=8.210A. Optical band-gap of the present system has been calculated using the UV-Vis Spectroscopy and Kubelka-Munk function, its value being 2.45 eV. A detailed study of the electronic properties has also been carried out using the density functional theory (DFT) techniques implemented on WIEN2k. Importance of electron-electron interaction between the Co ions leading to half-metallic behavior, crystal and exchange splitting together with the hybridization between O and Co, W has been investigated using the total and partial density of states.
Synchrotron X-ray diffraction patterns were measured and analyzed for a polycrystalline sample of the room-temperature ferromagnet Sr3.12Er0.88Co4O10.5 from 300 to 650 K, from which two structural phase transitions were found to occur successively. T he higher-temperature transition at 509 K is driven by ordering of the oxygen vacancies, which is closely related to the metallic state at high temperatures. The lower-temperature transition at 360 K is of first order, at which the ferromagnetic state suddenly appears with exhibiting a jump in magnetization and resistivity. Based on the refined structure, possible spin and orbital models for the magnetic order are proposed.
We report the synthesis via an indium flux method of a novel single-crystalline compound Rh3In3.4Ge3.6 that belongs to the cubic Ir3Ge7 structure type. In Rh3In3.4Ge3.6, the In and Ge atoms choose to preferentially occupy, respectively, the 12d and 1 6f sites of the Im-3m space group, thus creating a colored version of the Ir3Ge7 structure. Like the other compounds of the Ir3Ge7 family, Rh3In3.4Ge3.6 shows potential as a thermoelectric displaying a relatively large power factor, PF ~ 2 mW/cmK2, at a temperature T ~ 225 K albeit showing a modest figure of merit, ZT = 8 x 10-4, due to the lack of a finite band gap. These figures might improve through a use of chemical substitution strategies to achieve band gap opening. Remarkably, electronic band structure calculations reveal that this compound displays a complex Dirac-like electronic structure relatively close to the Fermi level. The electronic structure is composed of several Dirac type-I and type-II nodes, and even Dirac type-III nodes that result from the touching between a flat band and a linearly dispersing band. This rich Dirac-like electronic dispersion offers the possibility to observe Dirac type-III nodes and study their role in the physical properties of Rh3In3.4Ge3.6 and related Ir3Ge7-type materials.
Magnetic structures and the relationship between spin and charge-orbital orderings of an A-site ordered double-perovskite manganite SmBaMn2O6, an anticipated multiferroic material, were investigated by means of neutron diffraction. The spin arrangeme nt in MnO2 planes perpendicular to the c axis is revealed to be the same as that in the A-site disordered half-doped manganites CE-type but the stacking pattern is found to be different displaying a unique twofold period. The temperature dependence of the superlattice magnetic and nuclear reflections clarifies that the antiferromagnetic spin ordering occurs at a temperature slightly lower than the temperature at which a rearrangement of the charge-orbital orderings occurs. The result evidences that the rearrangement leads the spin ordering. The intensities of the magnetic reflections are found to change across Tf = 10 K, suggesting a spin-flop by 90 [deg.] while keeping the Mn spin ordering pattern unchanged.
