A new approach for the approximation of the channel log-likelihood ratio (LLR) for wireless channels based on Taylor series is proposed. The approximation is applied to the uncorrelated flat Rayleigh fading channel with unknown channel state information at the receiver. It is shown that the proposed approximation greatly simplifies the calculation of channel LLRs, and yet provides results almost identical to those based on the exact calculation of channel LLRs. The results are obtained in the context of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) schemes with low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes, and include threshold calculations and error rate performance of finite-length codes. Compared to the existing approximations, the proposed method is either significantly less complex, or considerably more accurate.

In this paper, we focus on the two-user Gaussian interference channel (GIC), and study the Han-Kobayashi (HK) coding/decoding strategy with the objective of designing low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. A code optimization algorithm is proposed wh ich adopts a random perturbation technique via tracking the average mutual information. The degree distribution optimization and convergence threshold computation are carried out for strong and weak interference channels, employing binary phase-shift keying (BPSK). Under strong interference, it is observed that optimized codes operate close to the capacity boundary. For the case of weak interference, it is shown that via the newly designed codes, a nontrivial rate pair is achievable, which is not attainable by single user codes with time-sharing. Performance of the designed LDPC codes are also studied for finite block lengths through simulations of specific codes picked from the optimized degree distributions.
As a typical example of bandwidth-efficient techniques, bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID) provides desirable spectral efficiencies in various wireless communication scenarios. In this paper, we carry out a comprehensi ve investigation on tail-biting (TB) spatially coupled protograph (SCP) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in BICM-ID systems. Specifically, we first develop a two-step design method to formulate a novel type of constellation mappers, referred to as labeling-bit-partial-match (LBPM) constellation mappers, for SC-P-based BICM-ID systems. The LBPM constellation mappers can be seamlessly combined with high-order modulations, such as M-ary phase-shift keying (PSK) and M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). Furthermore, we conceive a new bit-level interleaving scheme, referred to as variable node matched mapping (VNMM) scheme, which can substantially exploit the structure feature of SC-P codes and the unequal protection-degree property of labeling bits to trigger the wave-like convergence for TB-SC-P codes. In addition, we propose a hierarchical extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) algorithm to predict the convergence performance (i.e., decoding thresholds) of the proposed SC-P-based BICM-ID systems. Theoretical analyses and simulation results illustrate that the LBPM-mapped SC-P-based BICM-ID systems are remarkably superior to the state-of-the-art mapped counterparts. Moreover, the proposed SC-P-based BICM-ID systems can achieve even better error performance with the aid of the VNMM scheme. As a consequence, the proposed LBPM constellation mappers and VNMM scheme make the SC-P-based BICM-ID systems a favorable choice for the future-generation wireless communication systems.
This paper considers density evolution for lowdensity parity-check (LDPC) and multi-edge type low-density parity-check (MET-LDPC) codes over the binary input additive white Gaussian noise channel. We first analyze three singleparameter Gaussian appro ximations for density evolution and discuss their accuracy under several conditions, namely at low rates, with punctured and degree-one variable nodes. We observe that the assumption of symmetric Gaussian distribution for the density-evolution messages is not accurate in the early decoding iterations, particularly at low rates and with punctured variable nodes. Thus single-parameter Gaussian approximation methods produce very poor results in these cases. Based on these observations, we then introduce a new density evolution approximation algorithm for LDPC and MET-LDPC codes. Our method is a combination of full density evolution and a single-parameter Gaussian approximation, where we assume a symmetric Gaussian distribution only after density-evolution messages closely follow a symmetric Gaussian distribution. Our method significantly improves the accuracy of the code threshold estimation. Additionally, the proposed method significantly reduces the computational time of evaluating the code threshold compared to full density evolution thereby making it more suitable for code design.
In streaming applications, doping improves the performance of spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes by creating reduced-degree check nodes in the coupled chain. We formulate a scaling law to predict the bit and block error rate o f periodically-doped semi-infinite SC-LDPC code ensembles streamed over the binary erasure channel under sliding window decoding for a given finite component block length. The scaling law assumes that with some probability doping is equivalent to full termination and triggers two decoding waves; otherwise, decoding performs as if the coupled chain had not been doped at all. We approximate that probability and use the derived scaling laws to predict the error rates of SC-LDPC code ensembles in the presence of doping. The proposed scaling law provides accurate error rate predictions. We further use it to show that in streaming applications periodic doping can yield higher rates than periodic full termination for the same error-correcting performance.
Linear nested codes, where two or more sub-codes are nested in a global code, have been proposed as candidates for reliable multi-terminal communication. In this paper, we consider nested array-based spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDP C) codes and propose a line-counting based optimization scheme for minimizing the number of dominant absorbing sets in order to improve its performance in the high signal-to-noise ratio regime. Since the parity-check matrices of different nested sub-codes partially overlap, the optimization of one nested sub-code imposes constraints on the optimization of the other sub-codes. To tackle these constraints, a multi-step optimization process is applied first to one of the nested codes, then sequential optimization of the remaining nested codes is carried out based on the constraints imposed by the previously optimized sub-codes. Results show that the order of optimization has a significant impact on the number of dominant absorbing sets in the Tanner graph of the code, resulting in a tradeoff between the performance of a nested code structure and its optimization sequence: the code which is optimized without constraints has fewer harmful structures than the code which is optimized with constraints. We also show that for certain code parameters, dominant absorbing sets in the Tanner graphs of all nested codes are completely removed using our proposed optimization strategy.
