Nonlinear periodic systems, such as photonic crystals and Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) loaded into optical lattices, are often described by the nonlinear Schrodinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a sinusoidal potential. Here, we consider a model based on such a periodic potential, with the nonlinearity (attractive or repulsive) concentrated either at a single point or at a symmetric set of two points, which are represented, respectively, by a single {delta}-function or a combination of two {delta}-functions. This model gives rise to ordinary solitons or gap solitons (GSs), which reside, respectively, in the semi-infinite or finite gaps of the systems linear spectrum, being pinned to the {delta}-functions. Physical realizations of these systems are possible in optics and BEC, using diverse variants of the nonlinearity management. First, we demonstrate that the single {delta}-function multiplying the nonlinear term supports families of stable regular solitons in the self-attractive case, while a family of solitons supported by the attractive {delta}-function in the absence of the periodic potential is completely unstable. We also show that the {delta}-function can support stable GSs in the first finite gap in both the self-attractive and repulsive models. The stability analysis for the GSs in the second finite gap is reported too, for both signs of the nonlinearity. Alongside the numerical analysis, analytical approximations are developed for the solitons in the semi-infinite and first two finite gaps, with the single {delta}-function positioned at a minimum or maximum of the periodic potential. In the model with the symmetric set of two {delta}-functions, we study the effect of the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the pinned solitons. Two configurations are considered, with the {delta}-functions set symmetrically with respect to the minimum or maximum of the potential.

We report results of the analysis for families of one-dimensional (1D) trapped solitons, created by competing self-focusing (SF) quintic and self-defocusing (SDF) cubic nonlinear terms. Two trapping potentials are considered, the harmonic-oscillator (HO) and delta-functional ones. The models apply to optical solitons in colloidal waveguides and other photonic media, and to matter-wave solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) loaded into a quasi-1D trap. For the HO potential, the results are obtained in an approximate form, using the variational and Thomas-Fermi approximations (VA and TFA), and in a full numerical form, including the ground state and the first antisymmetric excited one. For the delta-functional attractive potential, the results are produced in a fully analytical form, and verified by means of numerical methods. Both exponentially localized solitons and weakly localized trapped modes are found for the delta-functional potential. The most essential conclusions concern the applicability of competing Vakhitov-Kolokolov (VK) and anti-VK criteria to the identification of the stability of solitons created under the action of the competing SF and SDF terms.

We analyze the existence and stability of two kinds of self-trapped spatially localized gap modes, gap solitons and truncated nonlinear Bloch waves, in one-and two-dimensional optical or matter-wave media with self-focusing nonlinearity, supported by a combination of linear and nonlinear periodic lattice potentials. The former is found to be stable once placed inside a single well of the nonlinear lattice, it is unstable otherwise. Contrary to the case with constant self-focusing nonlinearity, where the latter solution is always unstable, here, we demonstrate that it nevertheless can be stabilized by the nonlinear lattice since the model under consideration combines the unique properties of both the linear and nonlinear lattices. The practical possibilities for experimental realization of the predicted solutions are also discussed.

The article produces a brief review of some recent results which predict stable propagation of solitons and solitary vortices in models based on the nonlinear Schroedinger equation including fractional one- or two-dimensional diffraction and cubic or cubic-quintic nonlinear terms, as well as linear potentials. The fractional diffraction is represented by fractional-order spatial derivatives of the Riesz type, defined in terms of the direct and inverse Fourier transform. In this form, it can be realized by spatial-domain light propagation in optical setups with a specially devised combination of mirrors, lenses, and phase masks. The results presented in the article were chiefly obtained in a numerical form. Some analytical findings are included too -- in particular, for fast moving solitons, and results produced by the variational approximation. Also briefly considered are dissipative solitons which are governed by the fractional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation.

We study the existence of one-dimensional localized states supported by linear periodic potentials and a domain-wall-like Kerr nonlinearity. The model gives rise to several new types of asymmetric localized states, including single- and double-hump s oliton profiles, and multihump structures. Exploiting the linear stability analysis and direct simulations, we prove that these localized states are exceptional stable in the respective finite band gaps. The model applies to Bose-Einstein condensates loaded onto optical lattices, and in optics with period potentials, e.g., the photonic crystals and optical waveguide arrays, thereby the predicted solutions can be implemented in the state-of-the-art experiments.

It was recently demonstrated that two-dimensional Townes solitons (TSs) in two-component systems with cubic self-focusing, which are normally made unstable by the critical collapse, can be stabilized by linear spin-orbit coupling (SOC), in Bose-Einst ein condensates and optics alike. We demonstrate that one-dimensional TSs, realized as optical spatial solitons in a planar dual-core waveguide with dominant quintic self-focusing, may be stabilized by SOC-like terms emulated by obliquity of the coupling between cores of the waveguide. Thus, SOC offers a universal mechanism for the stabilization of the TSs. A combination of systematic numerical considerations and analytical approximations identifies a vast stability area for skew-symmetric solitons in the systems main (semi-infinite) and annex (finite) bandgaps. Tilted (moving) solitons are unstable, spontaneously evolving into robust breathers. For broad solitons, diffraction, represented by second derivatives in the system, may be neglected, leading to a simplified model with a finite bandgap. It is populated by skew-antisymmetric gap solitons, which are nearly stable close to the gaps bottom.
