We study the information rates of non-coherent, stationary, Gaussian, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) flat-fading channels that are achievable with nearest neighbour decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation. In particular, we analyse the behaviour of these achievable rates in the limit as the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) tends to infinity. We demonstrate that nearest neighbour decoding and pilot-aided channel estimation achieves the capacity pre-log - which is defined as the limiting ratio of the capacity to the logarithm of SNR as the SNR tends to infinity - of non-coherent multiple-input single-output (MISO) flat-fading channels, and it achieves the best so far known lower bound on the capacity pre-log of non-coherent MIMO flat-fading channels.

We study a noncoherent multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) fading multiple-access channel (MAC), where the transmitters and the receiver are aware of the statistics of the fading, but not of its realisation. We analyse the rate region that is achie vable with nearest neighbour decoding and pilot-assisted channel estimation and determine the corresponding pre-log region, which is defined as the limiting ratio of the rate region to the logarithm of the SNR as the SNR tends to infinity.

Information transmission over a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) fading channel with imperfect channel state information (CSI) is investigated, under a new receiver architecture which combines the recently proposed generalized nearest neighbor d ecoding rule (GNNDR) and a successive procedure in the spirit of successive interference cancellation (SIC). Recognizing that the channel input-output relationship is a nonlinear mapping under imperfect CSI, the GNNDR is capable of extracting the information embedded in the joint observation of channel output and imperfect CSI more efficiently than the conventional linear scheme, as revealed by our achievable rate analysis via generalized mutual information (GMI). Numerical results indicate that the proposed scheme achieves performance close to the channel capacity with perfect CSI, and significantly outperforms the conventional pilot-assisted scheme, which first estimates the CSI and then uses the estimated CSI as the true one for coherent decoding.
We propose a fast and near-optimal approach to joint channel-estimation, equalization, and decoding of coded single-carrier (SC) transmissions over frequency-selective channels with few-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Our approach leverages parametric bilinear generalized approximate message passing (PBiGAMP) to reduce the implementation complexity of joint channel estimation and (soft) symbol decoding to that of a few fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). Furthermore, it learns and exploits sparsity in the channel impulse response. Our work is motivated by millimeter-wave systems with bandwidths on the order of Gsamples/sec, where few-bit ADCs, SC transmissions, and fast processing all lead to significant reductions in power consumption and implementation cost. We numerically demonstrate our approach using signals and channels generated according to the IEEE 802.11ad wireless local area network (LAN) standard, in the case that the receiver uses analog beamforming and a single ADC.
This paper considers crowded massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communications over a Rician fading channel, where the number of users is much greater than the number of available pilot sequences. A joint user identification and line-of-si ght (LOS) component derivation algorithm is proposed without requiring a threshold. Based on the derived LOS component, we design a LOS-only channel estimator and an updated channel estimator.

In communication systems, efficient use of the spectrum is an indispensable concern. Recently the use of compressed sensing for the purpose of estimating Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) sparse multipath channels has been proposed to decrease the transmitted overhead in form of the pilot subcarriers which are essential for channel estimation. In this paper, we investigate the problem of deterministic pilot allocation in OFDM systems. The method is based on minimizing the coherence of the submatrix of the unitary Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) matrix associated with the pilot subcarriers. Unlike the usual case of equidistant pilot subcarriers, we show that non-uniform patterns based on cyclic difference sets are optimal. In cases where there are no difference sets, we perform a greedy search method for finding a suboptimal solution. We also investigate the performance of the recovery methods such as Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) and Iterative Method with Adaptive Thresholding (IMAT) for estimation of the channel taps.
