We have realized real-time steering of the directed transport in a Brownian motor based on cold atoms in optical lattices, and demonstrate drifts along pre-designed paths. The transport is induced by spatiotemporal asymmetries in the system, where we can control the spatial part, and we show that the response to changes in asymmetry is very fast. In addition to the directional steering, a real-time control of the magnitude of the average drift velocity and an on/off switching of the motor are also demonstrated. We use a non-invasive real-time detection of the transport, enabling a feedback control of the system.

The rectification of noise into directed movement or useful energy is utilized by many different systems. The peculiar nature of the energy source and conceptual differences between such Brownian motor systems makes a characterization of the performa nce far from straightforward. In this work, where the Brownian motor consists of atoms interacting with dissipative optical lattices, we adopt existing theory and present experimental measurements for both the efficiency and the transport coherence. We achieve up to 0.3% for the efficiency and 0.01 for the Peclet number.
A directed path in the vicinity of a hard wall exerts pressure on the wall because of loss of entropy. The pressure at a particular point may be estimated by estimating the loss of entropy if the point is excluded from the path. In this paper we dete rmine asymptotic expressions for the pressure on the X-axis in models of adsorbing directed paths in the first quadrant. Our models show that the pressure vanishes in the limit of long paths in the desorbed phase, but there is a non-zero pressure in the adsorbed phase. We determine asymptotic approximations of the pressure for finite length Dyck paths and directed paths, as well as for a model of adsorbing staircase polygons with both ends grafted to the X-axis.
We present here a detailed study of the behaviour of a three dimensional Brownian motor based on cold atoms in a double optical lattice [P. Sjolund et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 190602 (2006)]. This includes both experiments and numerical simulations of a Brownian particle. The potentials used are spatially and temporally symmetric, but combined spatiotemporal symmetry is broken by phase shifts and asymmetric transfer rates between potentials. The diffusion of atoms in the optical lattices is rectified and controlled both in direction and speed along three dimensions. We explore a large range of experimental parameters, where irradiances and detunings of the optical lattice lights are varied within the dissipative regime. Induced drift velocities in the order of one atomic recoil velocity have been achieved.
The availability of data from many different sources and fields of science has made it possible to map out an increasing number of networks of contacts and interactions. However, quantifying how reliable these data are remains an open problem. From B iology to Sociology and Economy, the identification of false and missing positives has become a problem that calls for a solution. In this work we extend one of newest, best performing models -due to Guimera and Sales-Pardo in 2009- to directed networks. The new methodology is able to identify missing and spurious directed interactions, which renders it particularly useful to analyze data reliability in systems like trophic webs, gene regulatory networks, communication patterns and social systems. We also show, using real-world networks, how the method can be employed to help searching for new interactions in an efficient way.
