A new set of nonlocal boundary conditions are proposed for the higher modes of the 3D inviscid primitive equations. Numerical schemes using the splitting-up method are proposed for these modes. Numerical simulations of the full nonlinear primitive equations are performed on a nested set of domains, and the results are discussed.

The efficient numerical integration of large-scale matrix differential equations is a topical problem in numerical analysis and of great importance in many applications. Standard numerical methods applied to such problems require an unduly amount of computing time and memory, in general. Based on a dynamical low-rank approximation of the solution, a new splitting integrator is proposed for a quite general class of stiff matrix differential equations. This class comprises differential Lyapunov and differential Riccati equations that arise from spatial discretizations of partial differential equations. The proposed integrator handles stiffness in an efficient way, and it preserves the symmetry and positive semidefiniteness of solutions of differential Lyapunov equations. Numerical examples that illustrate the benefits of this new method are given. In particular, numerical results for the efficient simulation of the weather phenomenon El Ni~no are presented.
We propose a fully discrete variational scheme for nonlinear evolution equations with gradient flow structure on the space of finite Radon measures on an interval with respect to a generalized version of the Wasserstein distance with nonlinear mobili ty. Our scheme relies on a spatially discrete approximation of the semi-discrete (in time) minimizing movement scheme for gradient flows. Performing a finite-volume discretization of the continuity equation appearing in the definition of the distance, we obtain a finite-dimensional convex minimization problem usable as an iterative scheme. We prove that solutions to the spatially discrete minimization problem converge to solutions of the spatially continuous original minimizing movement scheme using the theory of $Gamma$-convergence, and hence obtain convergence to a weak solution of the evolution equation in the continuous-time limit if the minimizing movement scheme converges. We illustrate our result with numerical simulations for several second- and fourth-order equations.

A new second-order method for approximating the compressible Euler equations is introduced. The method preserves all the known invariant domains of the Euler system: positivity of the density, positivity of the internal energy and the local minimum p rinciple on the specific entropy. The technique combines a first-order, invariant domain preserving, Guaranteed Maximum Speed method using a Graph Viscosity (GMS-GV1) with an invariant domain violating, but entropy consistent, high-order method. Invariant domain preserving auxiliary states, naturally produced by the GMS-GV1 method, are used to define local bounds for the high-order method which is then made invariant domain preserving via a convex limiting process. Numerical tests confirm the second-order accuracy of the new GMS-GV2 method in the maximum norm, where 2 stands for second-order. The proposed convex limiting is generic and can be applied to other approximation techniques and other hyperbolic systems.
We propose a numerical method to approximate the scattering amplitudes for the elasticity system with a non-constant matrix potential in dimensions $d=2$ and $3$. This requires to approximate first the scattering field, for some incident waves, which can be written as the solution of a suitable Lippmann-Schwinger equation. In this work we adapt the method introduced by G. Vainikko in cite{V} to solve such equations when considering the Lame operator. Convergence is proved for sufficiently smooth potentials. Implementation details and numerical examples are also given.
