A new high-efficiency and low-background system for the measurement of natural gamma radioactivity in marine sediment and rock cores retrieved from beneath the seabed was designed, built, and installed on the JOIDES Resolution research vessel. The system includes eight large NaI(Tl) detectors that measure adjacent intervals of the core simultaneously, maximizing counting times and minimizing statistical error for the limited measurement times available during drilling expeditions. Effect to background ratio is maximized with passive lead shielding, including both ordinary and low-activity lead. Large-area plastic scintillator active shielding filters background associated with the high-energy part of cosmic radiation. The new system has at least an order of magnitude higher statistical reliability and significantly enhances data quality compared to other offshore natural gamma radiation (NGR) systems designed to measure geological core samples. Reliable correlations and interpretations of cored intervals are possible at rates of a few counts per second.

The monitoring of Cs-137 in seawater using scintillation detector relies on the spectrum analysis method to extract the Cs-137 concentration. And when in poor statistic situation, the calculation result of the traditional net peak area (NPA) method h as a large uncertainty. We present a machine learning based method to better analyze the gamma-ray spectrum with low Cs-137 concentration. We apply multilayer perceptron (MLP) to analyze the 662 keV full energy peak of Cs-137 in the seawater spectrum. And the MLP can be trained with a few measured background spectrums by combining the simulated Cs-137 signal with measured background spectrums. Thus, it can save the time of preparing and measuring the standard samples for generating the training dataset. To validate the MLP-based method, we use Geant4 and background gamma-ray spectrums measured by a seaborne monitoring device to generate an independent test dataset to test the result by our method and the traditional NPA method. We find that the MLP-based method achieves a root mean squared error of 0.159, 2.3 times lower than that of the traditional net peak area method, indicating the MLP-based method improves the precision of Cs-137 concentration calculation
An 60Fe peak in a deep-sea FeMn crust has been interpreted as due to the signature left by the ejecta of a supernova explosion close to the solar system 2.8 +/- 0.4 Myr ago [Knie et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 171103 (2004)]. To confirm this interpreta tion with better time resolution and obtain a more direct flux estimate, we measured 60Fe concentrations along a dated marine sediment. We find no 60Fe peak at the expected level from 1.7 to 3.2 Myr ago. However, applying the same chemistry used for the sediment, we confirm the 60Fe signal in the FeMn crust. The cause of the discrepancy is discussed.
In this paper the sensor noise of two geophone configurations (L-22D and L-4C geophones from Sercel with custom built amplifiers) was measured by performing two huddle tests. It is shown that the accuracy of the results can be significantly improved by performing the huddle test in a seismically quiet environment and by using a large number of reference sensors to remove the seismic foreground signal from the data. Using these two techniques, the measured sensor noise of the two geophone configurations matched calculated predictions remarkably well in the bandwidth of interest (0.01 Hz to 100 Hz). Low noise operational amplifiers OPA188 were utilized to amplify the L-4C geophone to give a sensor that was characterized to be near Johnson noise limited in the bandwidth of interest with a noise value of $10^{-11} text{m}/sqrt{text{Hz}}$ at 1 Hz.
Organic scintillators are often chosen as radiation detectors for their fast decay time and their low Z, while inorganic ones are used when high light ields are required. In this paper we show that a para-terphenyl based detector has a blend of prope rties of the two categories that can be optimal for energy and position measurements of low energy charged particles. On 0.1% diphenylbutadiene doped para-terphenyl samples we measure a light yield 3.5+-0.2 times larger than a typical organic scintillator (EJ-200), and a rejection power for 660 keV photons, with respect to electrons of the same energy, ranging between 3-11%, depending on the signal threshold. We also measure a light attenuation length = 4.73+-0.06 mm and we demonstrate that, with the measurements performed in this paper, a simulation based on FLUKA can properly reproduce the measured spectra.
Prototype SiPMs with 4384 pixels of dimensions $15 times 15~mu $m$^2$ produced by KETEK have been irradiated with reactor neutrons to eight fluences between $10^9$ and $5times 10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$. For temperatures between $-30~^circ $C and $+30~^circ $C capacitance-voltage, admittance-frequency, current-forward voltage, current-reverse voltage and charge-voltage measurements with and without illumination by a sub-nanosecond laser have been performed. The data have been analysed using different methods in order to extract the dependence on neutron fluence and temperature of the electrical parameters, the breakdown oltage, the activation energy for the current generation, the dark-count rate and the response to light pulses. The results from the different analysis methods are compared.
