We present new ultraviolet (UV) observations of the luminous compact blue galaxy KISSR242, obtained with the HST-COS. We identify multiple resolved sub-arcsecond near-UV sources within the COS aperture. The far-UV spectroscopic data show strong outflow absorption lines, consistent with feedback processes related to an episode of massive star-formation. OI, CII, and SiII--SiIV are observed with a mean outflow velocity v_{out} = -60 km/s. We also detect faint fine-structure emission lines of singly ionized silicon for the first time in a low-redshift starburst galaxy. These emissions have been seen previously in deep Lyman break galaxy surveys at z ~ 3. The SiII* lines are at the galaxy rest velocity, and they exhibit a quantitatively different line profile from the absorption features. These lines have a width of ~ 75 km/s, too broad for point-like emission sources such as the HII regions surrounding individual star clusters. The size of the SiII* emitting region is estimated to be ~ 250 pc. We discuss the possibility of this emission arising in overlapping super star cluster HII regions, but find this explanation to be unlikely in light of existing far-UV observations of local star-forming galaxies. We suggest that the observed SiII* emission originates in a diffuse warm halo populated by interstellar gas driven out by intense star-formation and/or accreted during a recent interaction that may be fueling the present starburst episode in KISSR242.

The CAFE (Census of warm-hot intergalactic medium, Accretion, and Feedback Explorer) and LyRIC (Lyman UV Radiation from Interstellar medium and Circum-galactic medium) have been proposed to the space agencies in China respectively. CAFE was first pro posed in 2015 as a joint scientific CAS-ESA small space mission. LyRIC was proposed in 2019 as an independent external payload operating on the Chinese Space Station. Both missions are dedicated to mapping the Lyman UV emission (ionized oxygen (O VI) resonance lines at 103.2 and 103.8 nm, and Lyman series) for the diffuse sources in our Galaxy and the circum-galactic mediums of the nearby galaxies. We present the primary science objectives, mission concepts, the enabling technologies, as well as the current status.

Using GALFORM, a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation in the Lambda cold dark matter cosmology, we study the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) colours of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) in the redshift range 2.5 < z < 10. As the impact of dust on UV lumin osity can be dramatic, our model includes a self-consistent computation of dust attenuation based on a radiative transfer model. We find that intrinsically brighter galaxies suffer stronger dust attenuation than fainter ones, though the relation has a large scatter. The model predicts galaxies with UV colours consistent with the colour selection regions designed to select LBGs in observational surveys. We find that the drop-out technique that selects LBGs based on two rest-frame UV colours is robust and effective, selecting more than 70 per cent of UV bright galaxies at a given redshift. We investigate the impact on the predicted UV colours of varying selected model parameters. We find that the UV colours are most sensitive to the modelling of dust attenuation and in particular, to the extinction curve used in the radiative transfer calculation. If we assume a Milky Way dust extinction curve, the predicted UV continuum slopes are, in general, bluer than observed. However, we find that the opposite is true when using the Small Magellanic Cloud dust extinction curve. This demonstrates the strong dependence of UV colours on dust properties and highlights the inadequacy of using the UV continuum slope as a tracer of dust attenuation without any further knowledge of the galaxy inclination or dust characteristics in high redshift galaxies.

We present one of the most ultraviolet (UV) luminous Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) (J1432+3358) at z=2.78, discovered in the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS) Bootes field. The R-band magnitude of J1432+3358 is 22.29 AB, more than two magnitudes brig hter than typical L* LBGs at this redshift. The deep z-band image reveals two components of J1432+3358 separated by 1.0 with flux ratio of 3:1. The high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) rest-frame UV spectrum shows Lya emission line and interstellar medium absorption lines. The absence of NV and CIV emission lines, the non-detection in X-ray and radio wavelengths and mid-infrared (MIR) colors indicate no or weak active galactic nuclei (AGN) (<10%) in this galaxy. The galaxy shows broader line profile with the full width half maximum (FWHM) of about 1000 km/s and larger outflow velocity (~500 km/s) than those of typical z~3 LBGs. The physical properties are derived by fitting the spectral energy distribution (SED) with stellar synthesis models. The dust extinction, E(B-V)=0.12, is similar to that in normal LBGs. The star formation rates (SFRs) derived from the SED fitting and the dust-corrected UV flux are consistent with each other, ~300 Msun/yr, and the stellar mass is 1.3e11 Msun. The SFR and stellar mass in J1432+3358 are about an order of magnitude higher than those in normal LBGs. The SED-fitting results support that J1432+3358 has a continuous star formation history with the star formation episode of 630 Myr. The morphology of J1432+3358 and its physical properties suggest that J1432+3358 is in an early phase of 3:1 merger process. The unique properties and the low space number density (~1e-7 Mpc^{-3})are consistent with the interpretation that such galaxies are either found in a short unobscured phase of the star formation or that small fraction of intensive star-forming galaxies are unobscured.
In this paper, we study the relationship between the 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity (L_X), assumed to originate from X-ray binaries (XRBs), and star formation rate (SFR) in UV-selected z<0.1 Lyman break analogs (LBAs). We present Chandra observations for four new GALEX-selected LBAs. Including previously studied LBAs, Haro 11 and VV 114, we find that LBAs demonstrate L_X/SFR ratios that are elevated by ~1.5sigma compared to local galaxies, similar to the ratios found for stacked LBGs in the early Universe (z>2). We show that these LBAs are unlikely to harbor AGN, based on their optical and X-ray spectra and the spatial distribution of the X-rays in three spatially extended cases. We expect that high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) dominate the X-ray emission in these galaxies, based on their high specific SFRs (sSFRs=SFR/M* > 10^{-9}/yr), which suggest the prevalence of young stellar populations. Since both LBAs and LBGs have lower dust attenuations and metallicities compared to similar samples of more typical local galaxies, we investigate the effects of dust extinction and metallicity on the L_X/SFR for the broader population of galaxies with high sSFRs (>10^{-10}/yr). The estimated dust extinctions (corresponding to column densities of N_H<10^{22}/cm^2) are expected to have insignificant effects on observed L_X/SFR ratio for the majority of galaxy samples. We find that the observed relationship between L_X/SFR and metallicity appears consistent with theoretical expectations from X-ray binary population synthesis models. Therefore, we conclude that lower metallicities, related to more luminous HMXBs such as ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), drive the elevated L_X/SFR observed in our sample of z<0.1 LBAs. The relatively metal-poor, active mode of star formation in LBAs and distant z>2 LBGs may yield higher total HMXB luminosity than found in typical galaxies in the local Universe.

We report the results of a Spitzer infrared study of the Cosmic Eye, a strongly lensed, L*_UV Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) at z=3.074. We obtained Spitzer IRS spectroscopy as well as MIPS 24 and 70 micron photometry. The Eye is detected with high signifi cance at both 24 and 70 microns and, when including a flux limit at 3.5 mm, we estimate an infrared luminosity of L_IR = 8.3 (+4.7-4.4) x10^11 L_sun assuming a magnification of 28+-3. This L_IR is eight times lower than that predicted from the rest-frame UV properties assuming a Calzetti reddening law. This has also been observed in other young LBGs, and indicates that the dust reddening law may be steeper in these galaxies. The mid-IR spectrum shows strong PAH emission at 6.2 and 7.7 microns, with equivalent widths near the maximum values observed in star-forming galaxies at any redshift. The L_PAH-to-L_IR ratio lies close to the relation measured in local starbursts. Therefore, L_PAH or L_MIR may be used to estimate L_IR and thus, star formation rate, of LBGs, whose fluxes at longer wavelengths are typically below current confusion limits. We also report the highest redshift detection of the 3.3 micron PAH emission feature. The PAH ratio, L_6.2/L_3.3=5.1+- 2.7, and the PAH-to-L_IR ratio, L_3.3/L_IR = 8.5 +- 4.7 x10^-4, are both in agreement with measurements in local starbursts and ULIRGs, suggesting that this line may serve as a good proxy for L_PAH or L_IR at z > 3 with the James Webb Space Telescope.
