With the increasing interest in using (d,p) transfer reactions to extract structure and astrophysical information, it is important to evaluate the accuracy of common approximations in reaction theory. Starting from the zero-range adiabatic wave model, which takes into account deuteron breakup in the transfer process, we evaluate the importance of the finite range of the n-p interaction in calculating the adiabatic deuteron wave (as in Johnson and Tandy) as well as in evaluating the transfer amplitude. Our study covers a wide variety of targets, as well as a large range of beam energies. Whereas at low beam energies finite-range effects are small (below 10%), we find these effects to become important at intermediate energies (20 MeV/u) calling for an exact treatment of finite range in the analysis of (d,p) reactions measured at fragmentation facilities.

The finite range adiabatic wave approximation provides a practical method to analyze (d,p) or (p,d) reactions, however until now the level of accuracy obtained in the description of the reaction dynamics has not been determined. In this work, we perf orm a systematic comparison between the finite range adiabatic wave approximation and the exact Faddeev method. We include studies of $^{11}$Be(p,d)$^{10}$Be(g.s.) at $E_p=$5, 10 and 35 MeV; $^{12}$C(d,p)$^{13}$C(g.s.) at $E_d=$7, 12 and 56 MeV and $^{48}$Ca(d,p)$^{49}$Ca(g.s.) at $E_d=$19, 56 and 100 MeV. Results show that the two methods agree within $approx 5%$ for a range of beam energies ($E_d approx 20-40$ MeV) but differences increase significantly for very low energies and for the highest energies. Our tests show that ADWA agrees best with Faddeev when the angular momentum transfer is small $Delta l=0$ and when the neutron-nucleus system is loosely bound.
An important ingredient for applications of nuclear physics to e.g. astrophysics or nuclear energy are the cross sections for reactions of neutrons with rare isotopes. Since direct measurements are often not possible, indirect methods like (d,p) reac tions must be used instead. Those (d,p) reactions may be viewed as effective three-body reactions and described with Faddeev techniques. An additional challenge posed by (d,p) reactions involving heavier nuclei is the treatment of the Coulomb force. To avoid numerical complications in dealing with the screening of the Coulomb force, recently a new approach using the Coulomb distorted basis in momentum space was suggested. In order to implement this suggestion, one needs not only to derive a separable representation of neutron- and proton-nucleus optical potentials, but also compute the Coulomb distorted form factors in this basis.

The astrophysical factor of $^8$B($p$,$gamma$)$^9$C at zero energy, $S_{18}(0)$, is determined by a three-body coupled-channels analysis of the transfer reaction $^{8}$B($d$,$n$)$^{9}$C at 14.4 MeV/nucleon. Effects of the breakup channels of $d$ and $^9$C are investigated with the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method. It is found that, in the initial and final channels, respectively, the transfer process through the breakup states of $d$ and $^9$C, its interference with that through their ground states in particular, gives a large increase in the transfer cross section. The finite-range effects with respect to the proton-neutron relative coordinate are found to be about 20%. As a result of the present analysis, $S_{18}(0)=22 pm 6~{rm eV~b}$ is obtained, which is smaller than the result of the previous distorted-wave Born approximation analysis by about 51%.
A widely accepted practice for treating deuteron breakup in $A(d,p)B$ reactions relies on solving a three-body $A+n+p$ Schrodinger equation with pairwise $A$-$n$, $A$-$p$ and $n$-$p$ interactions. However, it was shown in [Phys. Rev. C textbf{89}, 02 4605 (2014)] that projection of the many-body $A+2$ wave function into the three-body $A+n+p$ channel results in a complicated three-body operator that cannot be reduced to a sum of pairwise potentials. It contains explicit contributions from terms that include interactions between the neutron and proton via excitation of the target $A$. Such terms are normally neglected. We estimate the first order contribution of these induced three-body terms and show that applying the adiabatic approximation to solving the $A+n+p$ model results in a simple modification of the two-body nucleon optical potentials. We illustrate the role of these terms for the case of $^{40}$Ca($d,p$)$^{41}$Ca transfer reactions at incident deuteron energies of 11.8, 20 and 56 MeV, using several parameterisations of nonlocal optical potentials.
Treating $(d,p)$ reactions in a Faddeev-AGS framework requires the interactions in the sub-systems as input. We derived separable representations for the neutron- and proton-nucleus interactions from phenomenological global optical potentials. In ord er to take into account excitations of the nucleus, excitations need to be included explicity, leading to a coupled-channel separable representation of the optical potential.
