Unveiling Far-Infrared Counterparts of Bright Submillimeter Galaxies Using PACS Imaging

We present a search for Herschel-PACS counterparts of dust-obscured, high-redshift objects previously selected at submillimeter and millimeter wavelengths in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North field. We detect 22 of 56 submillimeter galaxies (39%) with a SNR of >=3 at 100 micron down to 3.0 mJy, and/or at 160 micron down to 5.7 mJy. The fraction of SMGs seen at 160 micron is higher than that at 100 micron. About 50% of radio-identified SMGs are associated with PACS sources. We find a trend between the SCUBA/PACS flux ratio and redshift, suggesting that these flux ratios could be used as a coarse redshift indicator. PACS undetected submm/mm selected sources tend to lie at higher redshifts than the PACS detected ones. A total of 12 sources (21% of our SMG sample) remain unidentified and the fact that they are blank fields at Herschel-PACS and VLA 20 cm wavelength may imply higher redshifts for them than for the average SMG population (e.g., z>3-4). The Herschel-PACS imaging of these dust-obscured starbursts at high-redshifts suggests that their far-infrared spectral energy distributions have significantly different shapes than template libraries of local infrared galaxies.

We use deep observations obtained with the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) onboard the Herschel space observatory to study the far-infrared (FIR) properties of submm and optically faint radio galaxies (SMGs and OFRGs). From literat ure we compiled a sample of 35 securely identified SMGs and nine OFRGs located in the GOODS-N and the A2218 fields. This sample is cross-matched with our PACS 100 um and 160 um multi-wavelength catalogs. About half of the galaxies in our sample are detected with PACS. The dust temperatures and the infrared luminosities of our galaxies are derived by fitting their PACS and SCUBA 850 um (only the upper limits for the OFRGs) flux densities with a single modified (beta=1.5) black body function. The median dust temperature of our SMG sample is T=36+/-8K while for our OFRG sample it is T=47+/-3K. For both samples, median dust temperatures derived from Herschel data agree well with previous estimates. In particular, Chapman et al. (2005) found a dust temperature of T=36+/-7K for a large sample of SMGs assuming the validity of the FIR/radio correlation. The agreement between our studies confirms that the local FIR/radio correlation effectively holds at high redshift even though we find <q>=2.17+/-0.19, a slightly lower value than that observed in local systems. The median IR luminosities of SMGs and OFRGs are 4.6*10^12 Lsun and 2.6*10^12 Lsun, respectively. We note that for both samples the IR luminosity estimates from the radio part of the spectral energy distribution are accurate, while estimates from the mid-IR are considerably (x3) more uncertain. Our observations confirm the remarkably high luminosities of SMGs and thus imply median star-formation rates of 960Msun yr^-1 for SMGs with S(850um)>5mJy and 460Msun yr^-1 for SMGs with S(850um)>2mJy, assuming a Chabrier IMF and no dominant AGN contribution to the far-infrared luminosity.

The Herschel Lensing Survey (HLS) takes advantage of gravitational lensing by massive galaxy clusters to sample a population of high-redshift galaxies which are too faint to be detected above the confusion limit of current far-infrared/submillimeter telescopes. Measurements from 100-500 micron bracket the peaks of the far-infrared spectral energy distributions of these galaxies, characterizing their infrared luminosities and star formation rates. We introduce initial results from our science demonstration phase observations, directed toward the Bullet cluster (1E0657-56). By combining our observations with LABOCA 870 micron and AzTEC 1.1 mm data we fully constrain the spectral energy distributions of 19 MIPS 24 micron selected galaxies which are located behind the cluster. We find that their colors are best fit using templates based on local galaxies with systematically lower infrared luminosities.This suggests that our sources are not like local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies in which vigorous star formation is contained in a compact highly dust-obscured region. Instead, they appear to be scaled
NGC 1097 is a nearby SBb galaxy with a Seyfert nucleus and a bright starburst ring. We study the physical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the ring using spatially resolved far-infrared spectral maps of the circumnuclear starburst ring of NGC 1097, obtained with the PACS spectrometer on board the Herschel Space Telescope. In particular, we map the important ISM cooling and diagnostic emission lines of [OI] 63 $mu$m, [OIII] 88 $mu$m, [NII] 122 $mu$m, [CII] 158 $mu$m and [NII] 205 $mu$m. We observe that in the [OI] 63 $mu$m, [OIII] 88 $mu$m, and [NII] 122 $mu$m line maps, the emission is enhanced in clumps along the NE part of the ring. We observe evidence of rapid rotation in the circumnuclear ring, with a rotation velocity of ~220$ km s$^{-1}$ (inclination uncorrected) measured in all lines. The [OI] 63 $mu$m/[CII] 158 $mu$m ratio varies smoothly throughout the central region, and is enhanced on the northeastern part of the ring, which may indicate a stronger radiation field. This enhancement coincides with peaks in the [OI] 63 $mu$m and [OIII] 88 $mu$m maps. Variations of the [NII] 122 $mu$m/[NII] 205 $mu$m ratio correspond to a range in the ionized gas density between 150 and 400 cm$^{-3}$.
(abridged) We present the first study of the farIR properties of high redshift, radio-selected ULIRGs using deep observations obtained with SPIRE from the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES). These galaxies span a large range of 850um fluxes from submillimetre-luminous ~10mJy SCUBA galaxies -- SMGs to ~1.5mJy from stacked SCUBA non-detections, thus likely representing a complete distribution of ULIRG spectral energy distributions. From Keck spectroscopic surveys in the Lockman-North field we identified a sample of 31 SMGs and 37 submillimetre-faint, optically-faint radio galaxies (OFRGs), all with radio-inferred IR luminosities >10^12 Lsun. These galaxies were cross-identified with SPIRE 250, 350 and 500um catalogs based on fluxes extracted at 24um positions in the SWIRE survey, yielding a sample of more than half of the galaxies well detected in at least two of the SPIRE bandpasses. By fitting greybody dust models to the SPIRE photometry together with SCUBA 850um measurements, we infer dust temperatures and far-infrared luminosities. The OFRGs detected by SPIRE have median <T_d>= 41+-5 K and the SMGs have <T_d>= 34+-5 K, both in reasonable agreement with previous (pre-Herschel) estimates, reaffirming that the local FIR/radio correlation holds (at least for this subset of high-z ULIRGs) at high redshift. Our observations firstly confirm that a substantial fraction of OFRGs exhibit large infrared luminosities corresponding to SFRs of ~400 Msun/yr. The SPIRE observations secondly confirm the higher dust temperatures for these OFRGs than similarly selected SMGs, consistent with early predictions of the submm-faint radio populations. Our observations also clearly confirm the large infrared luminosities of most SMGs selected with S850um>5 mJy and radio and strong 24um detections, corresponding to SFRs of ~700 Msun/yr.
We present ALMA Atacama Compact Array (ACA) 870 micron continuum maps of 28 infrared-bright SDSS quasars with Herschel/SPIRE detections at redshifts 2-4, the largest such sample ever observed with ALMA. The ACA detections are centred on the SDSS coor dinates to within 1 arcsec for about 80 per cent of the sample. Larger offsets indicate that the far-infrared (FIR) emission detected by Herschel might come from a companion source. The majority of the objects (about 70 per cent) have unique ACA counterparts within the SPIRE beam down to 3-4 arcsec resolution. Only 30 per cent of the sample shows clear evidence for multiple sources with secondary counterparts contributing to the total 870 micron flux within the SPIRE beam to at least 25 per cent. We discuss the limitations of the data based on simulated pairs of point-like sources at the resolution of the ACA and present an extensive comparison of our findings with recent works on the multiplicities of sub-millimetre galaxies. We conclude that, despite the coarse resolution of the ACA, our data support the idea that, for a large fraction of FIR-bright quasars, the sub-mm emission comes from single sources. Our results suggest that, on average, optically bright quasars with strong FIR emission are not triggered by early-stage mergers but are, instead, together with their associated star formation rates, the outcome of either late-stage mergers or secular processes.
