Topological insulators in three dimensions are characterized by a Z2-valued topological invariant, which consists of a strong index and three weak indices. In the presence of disorder, only the strong index survives. This paper studies the topological invariant in disordered three-dimensional system by viewing it as a super-cell of an infinite periodic system. As an application of this method we show that the strong index becomes non-trivial when strong enough disorder is introduced into a trivial insulator with spin-orbit coupling, realizing a strong topological Anderson insulator. We also numerically extract the gap range and determine the phase boundaries of this topological phase, which ?ts well with those obtained from self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) and the transport calculations.

We show that a thin film of a three-dimensional topological insulator (3DTI) with an exchange field is a realization of the famous Haldane model for quantum Hall effect (QHE) without Landau levels. The exchange field plays the role of staggered fluxe s on the honeycomb lattice, and the hybridization gap of the surface states is equivalent to alternating on-site energies on the AB sublattices. A peculiar phase diagram for the QHE is predicted in 3DTI thin films under an applied magnetic field, which is quite different from that either in traditional QHE systems or in graphene.
The surface of a 3D topological insulator is conducting and the topologically nontrivial nature of the surface states is observed in experiments. It is the aim of this paper to review and analyze experimental observations with respect to the magnetot ransport in Bi-based 3D topological insulators, as well as the superconducting transport properties of hybrid structures consisting of superconductors and these topological insulators. The helical spin-momentum coupling of the surface state electrons becomes visible in quantum corrections to the conductivity and magnetoresistance oscillations. An analysis will be provided of the reported magnetoresistance, also in the presence of bulk conductivity shunts. Special attention is given to the large and linear magnetoresistance. Superconductivity can be induced in topological superconductors by means of the proximity effect. The induced supercurrents, Josephson effects and current-phase relations will be reviewed. These materials hold great potential in the field of spintronics and the route towards Majorana devices.
Dislocations are ubiquitous in three-dimensional solid-state materials. The interplay of such real space topology with the emergent band topology defined in reciprocal space gives rise to gapless helical modes bound to the line defects. This is known as bulk-dislocation correspondence, in contrast to the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence featuring topological states at boundaries. However, to date rare compelling experimental evidences are presented for this intriguing topological observable, owing to the presence of various challenges in solid-state systems. Here, using a three-dimensional acoustic topological insulator with precisely controllable dislocations, we report an unambiguous experimental evidence for the long-desired bulk-dislocation correspondence, through directly measuring the gapless dispersion of the one-dimensional topological dislocation modes. Remarkably, as revealed in our further experiments, the pseudospin-locked dislocation modes can be unidirectionally guided in an arbitrarily-shaped dislocation path. The peculiar topological dislocation transport, expected in a variety of classical wave systems, can provide unprecedented controllability over wave propagations.
Robust fractional charge localized at disclination defects has been recently found as a topological response in $C_{6}$ symmetric 2D topological crystalline insulators (TCIs). In this article, we thoroughly investigate the fractional charge on discli nations in $C_n$ symmetric TCIs, with or without time reversal symmetry, and including spinless and spin-$frac{1}{2}$ cases. We compute the fractional disclination charges from the Wannier representations in real space and use band representation theory to construct topological indices of the fractional disclination charge for all $2D$ TCIs that admit a (generalized) Wannier representation. We find the disclination charge is fractionalized in units of $frac{e}{n}$ for $C_n$ symmetric TCIs; and for spin-$frac{1}{2}$ TCIs, with additional time reversal symmetry, the disclination charge is fractionalized in units of $frac{2e}{n}$. We furthermore prove that with electron-electron interactions that preserve the $C_n$ symmetry and many-body bulk gap, though we can deform a TCI into another which is topologically distinct in the free fermion case, the fractional disclination charge determined by our topological indices will not change in this process. Moreover, we use an algebraic technique to generalize the indices for TCIs with non-zero Chern numbers, where a Wannier representation is not applicable. With the inclusion of the Chern number, our generalized fractional disclination indices apply for all $C_n$ symmetric TCIs. Finally, we briefly discuss the connection between the Chern number dependence of our generalized indices and the Wen-Zee term.
We study two-electron states confined in two coupled quantum dots formed by a short-range potential in a two-dimensional topological insulator. It is shown that there is a fairly wide range of the system parameters, where the ground state is a triple tlike state formed by a superposition of two spin-polarized states. Outside this range, the ground state is a singlet. A transition between the singlet and triplet states can be realized by changing the potential of the quantum dots. The effect is caused by a significant change in the energies of the Coulomb repulsion and the exchange interaction of electrons due to the presence of the pseudospin components of the wave function when the band spectrum is inverted.
