This article treats chaotic scattering with three degrees of freedom, where one of them is open and the other two are closed, as a first step toward a more general understanding of chaotic scattering in higher dimensions. Despite of the strong restrictions it breaks the essential simplicity implicit in any two-dimensional time-independent scattering problem. Introducing the third degree of freedom by breaking a continuous symmetry, we first explore the topological structure of the homoclinic/heteroclinic tangle and the structures in the scattering functions. Then we work out implications of these structures for the doubly differential cross section. The most prominent structures in the cross section are rainbow singularities. They form a fractal pattern which reflects the fractal structure of the chaotic invariant set. This allows to determine structures in the cross section from the invariant set and conversely, to obtain information about the topology of the invariant set from the cross section. The latter is a contribution to the inverse scattering problem for chaotic systems.

Exact analytical expressions for the cross-section correlation functions of chaotic scattering sys- tems have hitherto been derived only under special conditions. The objective of the present article is to provide expressions that are applicable beyo nd these restrictions. The derivation is based on a statistical model of Breit-Wigner type for chaotic scattering amplitudes which has been shown to describe the exact analytical results for the scattering (S)-matrix correlation functions accurately. Our results are given in the energy and in the time representations and apply in the whole range from isolated to overlapping resonances. The S-matrix contributions to the cross-section correla- tions are obtained in terms of explicit irreducible and reducible correlation functions. Consequently, the model can be used for a detailed exploration of the key features of the cross-section correlations and the underlying physical mechanisms. In the region of isolated resonances, the cross-section correlations contain a dominant contribution from the self-correlation term. For narrow states the self-correlations originate predominantly from widely spaced states with exceptionally large partial width. In the asymptotic region of well-overlapping resonances, the cross-section autocorrelation functions are given in terms of the S-matrix autocorrelation functions. For inelastic correlations, in particular, the Ericson fluctuations rapidly dominate in that region. Agreement with known analytical and with experimental results is excellent.
We consider a three-dimensional chaotic system consisting of the suspension of Arnolds cat map coupled with a clock via a weak dissipative interaction. We show that the coupled system displays a synchronization phenomenon, in the sense that the relat ive phase between the suspension flow and the clock locks to a special value, thus making the motion fall onto a lower dimensional attractor. More specifically, we construct the attractive invariant manifold, of dimension smaller than three, using a convergent perturbative expansion. Moreover, we compute via convergent series the Lyapunov exponents, including notably the central one. The result generalizes a previous construction of the attractive invariant manifold in a similar but simpler model. The main novelty of the current construction relies in the computation of the Lyapunov spectrum, which consists of non-trivial analytic exponents. Some conjectures about a possible smoothening transition of the attractor as the coupling is increased are also discussed.
We shall use symmetry breaking as a tool to attack the problem of identifying the topology of chaotic scatteruing with more then two degrees of freedom. specifically we discuss the structure of the homoclinic/heteroclinic tangle and the connection be tween the chaotic invariant set, the scattering functions and the singularities in the cross section for a class of scattering systems with one open and two closed degrees of freedom.
Quantized, compact graphs were shown to be excellent paradigms for quantum chaos in bounded systems. Connecting them with leads to infinity we show that they display all the features which characterize scattering systems with an underlying classical chaotic dynamics. We derive exact expressions for the scattering matrix, and an exact trace formula for the density of resonances, in terms of classical orbits, analogous to the semiclassical theory of chaotic scattering. A statistical analysis of the cross sections and resonance parameters compares well with the predictions of Random Matrix Theory. Hence, this system is proposed as a convenient tool to study the generic behavior of chaotic scattering systems, and their semiclassical description.

The rigorous analytical calculation of the diffusion coefficient is performed for the chaotic motion of a particle in a set of longitudinal waves with random phases and large amplitudes (~ A). A first step proves the existence of a quasilinear diffus ion on a time scale ~ A^{-2/3} ln A. A second step uses this property to extend the result to asymptotic times by introducing the conditional probability distribution of position and velocity of an orbit at a given time when they are known at a previous time.
