Fast parton probes produced by hard scattering and embedded within collisions of large nuclei have shown that partons suffer large energy loss and that the produced medium may respond collectively to the lost energy. We present measurements of neutral pion trigger particles at transverse momenta p^t_T = 4-12 GeV/c and associated charged hadrons (p^a_T = 0.5-7 GeV/c) as a function of relative azimuthal angle Delta Phi at midrapidity in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. These data lead to two major observations. First, the relative angular distribution of low momentum hadrons, whose shape modification has been interpreted as a medium response to parton energy loss, is found to be modified only for p^t_T < 7 GeV/c. At higher p^t_T, the data are consistent with unmodified or very weakly modified shapes, even for the lowest measured p^a_T. This observation presents a quantitative challenge to medium response scenarios. Second, the associated yield of hadrons opposite to the trigger particle in Au+Au relative to that in p+p (I_AA) is found to be suppressed at large momentum (IAA ~ 0.35-0.5), but less than the single particle nuclear modification factor (R_AA ~0.2).

Relativistic heavy ion collisions, which are performed at large experimental programs such as Relativistic Heavy Ion Colliders (RHIC) STAR experiment and the Large Hadron Colliders (LHC) experiments, can create an extremely hot and dense state of the matter known as the quark gluon plasma (QGP). A huge amount of sub-nucleonic particles are created in the collision processes and their interaction and subsequent evolution after the collision takes place is at the core of the understanding of the matter that builds up the Universe. It has recently been shown that event-by-event fluctuations in the spatial distribution between different collision events have great impact on the particle distributions that are measured after the evolution of the created system. Specifically, these distributions are greatly responsible for generating the observed azimuthal anisotropy in measurements. Furthermore, the eventual cooling and expansion of the fluctuating system can become very complex due to lumps of energy density and temperature, which affects the interaction of the particles that traverse the medium. In this configuration, heavy flavor particles play a special role, as they are generally created at the initial stages of the process and have properties that allow them to retain memory from the interactions within the whole evolution of the system. However, the comparison between experimental data and theoretical or phenomenological predictions on the heavy flavor sector cannot fully explain the heavy quarks coupling with the medium and their subsequent hadronization process. Azimuthal angle (Delta phi) correlations are presented for a broad range of transverse momentum (0.4 < pT < 10 GeV/c) and centrality (0-92%) selections for charged hadrons from di-jets in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV. With increasing pT, the away-side Delta phi distribution evolves from a broad and relatively flat shape to a concave shape, then to a convex shape. Comparisons to p+p data suggest that the away-side distribution can be divided into a partially suppressed head region centered at Delta phi ~ pi, and an enhanced shoulder region centered at Delta phi ~ pi pm 1:1. The pT spectrum for the associated hadrons in the head region softens toward central collisions. The spectral slope for the shoulder region is independent of centrality and trigger pT . The properties of the near-side distributions are also modified relative to those in p + p collisions, reflected by the broadening of the jet shape in Delta phi and Delta eta, and an enhancement of the per-trigger yield. However, these modifications seem to be limited to pT < 4 GeV/c, above which both the dihadron pair shape and per-trigger yield become similar to p + p collisions. These observations suggest that both the away- and near-side distributions contain a jet fragmentation component which dominates for pT ge 5GeV and a medium-induced component which is important for pT le 4 GeV/c. We also quantify the role of jets at intermediate and low pT through the yield of jet-induced pairs in comparison to binary scaled p + p pair yield. The yield of jet-induced pairs is suppressed at high pair proxy energy (sum of the pT magnitudes of the two hadrons) and is enhanced at low pair proxy energy. The former is consistent with jet quenching; the latter is consistent with the enhancement of soft hadron pairs due to transport of lost energy to lower pT.

These proceedings present a brief overview of the main results on jet-modifications in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. In heavy ion collisions, jets are studied using single hadron spectra and di-hadron correlations with a high-pt{} trigger hadrons. At high pt, a suppression of the yields due to parton energy loss is observed. A quantitative confrontation of the data with various theoretical approaches to energy loss in a dense QCD medium is being pursued. First results from $gamma$-jet events, where the photon balances the initial jet energy, are also presented and compared to expectations from models based on di-hadron measurements. At intermediate pt, two striking modifications of the di-hadron correlation structure are found in heavy ion collisions: the presence of a long-range {it ridge} structure in deta{}, and a large broadening of the recoil jet. Both phenomena seem to indicate an interplay between hard and soft physics.
A systematic analysis of correlations between different orders of $p_T$-differential flow is presented, including mode coupling effects in flow vectors, correlations between flow angles (a.k.a. event-plane correlations), and correlations between flow magnitudes, all of which were previously studied with integrated flows. We find that the mode coupling effects among differential flows largely mirror those among the corresponding integrated flows, except at small transverse momenta where mode coupling contributions are small. For the fourth- and fifth-order flow vectors $V_4$ and $V_5$ we argue that the event plane correlations can be understood as the ratio between the mode coupling contributions to these flows and and the flow magnitudes. We also find that for $V_4$ and $V_5$ the linear response contribution scales linearly with the corresponding cumulant-defined eccentricities but not with the standard eccentricities.
Charged-particle spectra associated with direct photon ($gamma_{dir} $) and $pi^0$ are measured in $p$+$p$ and Au+Au collisions at center-of-mass energy $sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC. A hower-shape analysis is used to parti ally discriminate between $gamma_{dir}$ and $pi^0$. Assuming no associated charged particles in the $gamma_{dir}$ direction (near side) and small contribution from fragmentation photons ($gamma_{frag}$), the associated charged-particle yields opposite to $gamma_{dir}$ (away side) are extracted. At mid-rapidity ($|eta|<0.9$) in central Au+Au collisions, charged-particle yields associated with $gamma_{dir}$ and $pi^0$ at high transverse momentum ($8< p_{T}^{trig}<16$ GeV/$c$) are suppressed by a factor of 3-5 compared with $p$ + $p$ collisions. The observed suppression of the associated charged particles, in the kinematic range $|eta|<1$ and $3< p_{T}^{assoc} < 16$ GeV/$c$, is similar for $gamma_{dir}$ and $pi^0$, and independent of the $gamma_{dir}$ energy within uncertainties. These measurements indicate that the parton energy loss, in the covered kinematic range, is insensitive to the parton path length.
