Optically isotropic metamaterials (MMs) are required for the implementation of subwavelength imaging systems. At first glance one would expect that their design should be based on unit cells exhibiting a cubic symmetry being the highest crystal symmetry. It is anticipated that this is a sufficient condition since it is usually assumed that light does not resolve the spatial details of MM but experiences the properties of an effective medium, which is then optically isotropic. In this work we challenge this assumption by analyzing the isofrequency surfaces of the dispersion relation of the split-cube in carcass (SCiC) negative index MM. We show that this MM is basically optically isotropic, but not in the spectral domain where it exhibits negative refraction. The primary goal of this contribution is to introduce a tool that allows to probe a MM against optical isotropy.

Metamaterials--artificially structured materials with tailored electromagnetic response--can be designed to have properties difficult to achieve with existing materials. Here we present a structured metamaterial, based on conducting split ring resona tors (SRRs), which has an effective index-of-refraction with a constant spatial gradient. We experimentally confirm the gradient by measuring the deflection of a microwave beam by a planar slab of the composite metamaterial over a broad range of frequencies. The gradient index metamaterial represents an alternative approach to the development of gradient index lenses and similar optics that may be advantageous, especially at higher frequencies. In particular, the gradient index material we propose may be suited for terahertz applications, where the magnetic resonant response of SRRs has recently been demonstrated.
A robust wedge setup is proposed to unambiguously demonstrate negative refraction for negative index metamaterials. We applied our setup to several optical metamaterials from the literature and distinctly observed the phenomena of negative refraction . This further consolidates the reported negative-index property. It is found there generally exists a lateral shift for the outgoing beam through the wedge. We derived a simple expression for calculating this beam shift and interestingly, it provides us a strategy to quantitatively estimate the loss of the wedge material (Im[n]). Addition- ally, we offered a design of metamaterials, compatible with nano-imprinting-lithography, showing negative refractive index in the visible regime (around yellow-light wavelengths). The multi-layer- system retrieval was utilized to extract the effective refractive index of the metamaterial. It was also intuitively characterized through our wedge setup to demonstrate corresponding phenomena of refraction.

We demonstrate numerically and experimentally a conjugated gammadion chiral metamaterial that uniaxially exhibits huge optical activity and circular dichroism, and gives a negative refractive index. This chiral design provides smaller unit cell size and larger chirality compared with other published planar designs. Experiments are performed at GHz frequencies (around 6GHz) and in good agreement with the numerical simulations.

We examine the Seidel aberrations of thin spherical lenses composed of media with refractive index not restricted to be positive. We find that consideration of this expanded parameter space allows reduction or elimination of more aberrations than is possible with only positive index media. In particular we find that spherical lenses possessing real aplanatic focal points are possible only with negative index. We perform ray tracing, using custom code that relies only on Maxwells equations and conservation of energy, that confirms the results of the aberration calculations.
Aiming at the promising superlensing for the medical ultrasonic and detection, the double-negative metamaterials which possess the negative mass density and elastic modulus simultaneously can be acted as the ideal superlens for breaking the diffracti on limit. In this paper, we use topology optimization to design the two-dimensional single-phase anisotropic elastic metamaterials with broadband double-negative indices and numerically demonstrate the superlensing at the deep-subwavelength scale. We also discuss the impact of several parameters adopted in the objective function and constraints on the optimized results. Unlike all previous reported mechanisms, our optimized structures exhibit the new quadrupolar or multipolar resonances for the negative mass density, negative longitudinal and shear moduli. In addition, we observe the negative refraction of transverse waves in a single-phase material. Most structures can serve as the anisotropic zero-index metamaterials for the longitudinal or transverse wave at a certain frequency. The cloaking effect is demonstrated for both the longitudinal and transverse waves. Moreover, with the particular constraints in optimization, we design a super-anisotropic metamaterial exhibiting the double-negative and hyperbolic dispersions along two principal directions, respectively. Our optimization work provides a robust computational approach to negative index engineering in elastic metamaterials and guides design of other kinds of metamaterials, including the electromagnetic and acoustic metamaterials. The unusual properties of our optimized structures are likely to inspire new ideas and novel applications including the low-frequency vibration attenuation, flat lens and ultrasonography for elastic waves in the future.
