Spin-pumping generates pure spin currents in normal metals at the ferromagnet (F)/normal metal (N) interface. The efficiency of spin-pumping is given by the spin mixing conductance, which depends on N and the F/N interface. We directly study the spin-pumping through an MgO tunnel-barrier using the inverse spin Hall effect, which couples spin and charge currents and provides a direct electrical detection of spin currents in the normal metal. We find that spin-pumping is suppressed by the tunnel-barrier, which is contrary to recent studies that suggest that the spin mixing conductance can be enhanced by a tunnel-barrier inserted at the interface.

The authors studied an effect of ferromagnetic (Co20Fe60B20 or Fe) layer insertion on tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) properties of MgO-barrier magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with CoFe/Pd multilayer electrodes. TMR ratio in MTJs with CoFeB/MgO/Fe st ack reached 67% at an-nealing temperature (Ta) of 200 degree C and then decreased rapidly at Ta over 250 degree C. The degradation of the TMR ratio may be related to crystallization of CoFe(B) into fcc(111) or bcc(011) texture result-ing from diffusion of B into Pd layers. MTJs which were in-situ annealed at 350oC just after depo-siting bottom CoFe/Pd multilayer showed TMR ratio of 78% by post annealing at Ta =200 degree C.
We investigate the influence of the barrier thickness of Co$_{40}$Fe$_{40}$B$_{20}$ based magnetic tunnel junctions on the laser-induced tunnel magneto-Seebeck effect. Varying the barrier thickness from 1nm to 3nm, we find a distinct maximum in the t unnel magneto-Seebeck effect for 2.6nm barrier thickness. This maximum is independently measured for two barrier materials, namely MgAl$_2$O$_4$ and MgO. Additionally, samples with an MgAl$_2$O$_4$ barrier exhibit a high thermovoltage of more than 350$mu$V in comparison to 90$mu$V for the MTJs with MgO barrier when heated with the maximum laser power of 150mW. Our results allow for the fabrication of improved stacks when dealing with temperature differences across magnetic tunnel junctions for future applications in spin caloritronics, the emerging research field that combines spintronics and themoelectrics.

We studied the response of a ferromagnet-insulator-normal metal tunnel structure under an external oscillating radio frequency (R.F.) magnetic field. The D. C. voltage across the junction is calculated and is found not to decrease despite the high re sistance of the junction; instead, it is of the order of $mu V$ to $100mu V$, much larger than the experimentally observed value (100 nano-V) in the strong coupled ohmic ferromagnet-normal metal bilayers. This is consistent with recent experimental results in tunnel structures, where the voltage is larger than $mu V$s. The damping and loss of an external RF field in this structure is calculated.
We demonstrate spin polarized tunneling from Fe through a SiO2 tunnel barrier into a Si n-i-p heterostructure. Transport measurements indicate that single step tunneling is the dominant transport mechanism. The circular polarization, Pcirc, of the el ectroluminescence (EL) shows that the tunneling spin polarization reflects Fe majority spin. Pcirc tracks the Fe magnetization, confirming that the spin-polarized electrons radiatively recombining in the Si originate from the Fe. A rate equation analysis provides a lower bound of 30% for the electron spin polarization in the Si at 5 K.
Heterostructures composed of ferromagnetic layers that are mutually interacting through a nonmagnetic spacer are at the core of magnetic sensor and memory devices. In the present study, layer-resolved ferromagnetic resonance was used to investigate t he coupling between the magnetic layers of a Co/MgO/Permalloy magnetic tunnel junction. Two magnetic resonance peaks were observed for both magnetic layers, as probed at the Co and Ni L3 x-ray absorption edges, showing a strong interlayer interaction through the insulating MgO barrier. A theoretical model based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation was developed, including exchange coupling and spin pumping between the magnetic layers. Fits to the experimental data were carried out, both with and without a spin pumping term, and the goodness of the fit was compared using a likelihood ratio test. This rigorous statistical approach provides an unambiguous proof of the existence of interlayer coupling mediated by spin pumping.
