We study a mass transport model, where spherical particles diffusing on a ring can stochastically exchange volume $v$, with the constraint of a fixed total volume $V=sum_{i=1}^N v_i$, $N$ being the total number of particles. The particles, referred to as $p$-spheres, have a linear size that behaves as $v_i^{1/p}$ and our model thus represents a gas of polydisperse hard rods with variable diameters $v_i^{1/p}$. We show that our model admits a factorized steady state distribution which provides the size distribution that minimizes the free energy of a polydisperse hard rod system, under the constraints of fixed $N$ and $V$. Complementary approaches (explicit construction of the steady state distribution on the one hand ; density functional theory on the other hand) completely and consistently specify the behaviour of the system. A real space condensation transition is shown to take place for $p>1$: beyond a critical density a macroscopic aggregate is formed and coexists with a critical fluid phase. Our work establishes the bridge between stochastic mass transport approaches and the optimal polydispersity of hard sphere fluids studied in previous articles.

A system of hard rigid rods of length $k$ on hypercubic lattices is known to undergo two phases transitions when chemical potential is increased: from a low density isotropic phase to an intermediate density nematic phase, and on further increase to a high-density phase with no orientational order. In this paper, we argue that, for large $k$, the second phase transition is a first order transition with a discontinuity in density in all dimensions greater than $1$. We show the chemical potential at the transition is $approx k ln [k /ln k]$ for large $k$, and that the density of uncovered sites drops from a value $ approx (ln k)/k^2$ to a value of order $exp(-ak)$, where $a$ is some constant, across the transition. We conjecture that these results are asymptotically exact, in all dimensions $dgeq 2$. We also present evidence of coexistence of nematic and disordered phases from Monte Carlo simulations for rods of length $9$ on the square lattice.

The solid-solid coexistence of a polydisperse hard sphere system is studied by using the Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that for large enough polydispersity the solid-solid coexistence state is more stable than the single-phase solid. The t wo coexisting solids have different composition distributions but the same crystal structure. Moreover, there is evidence that the solid-solid transition terminates in a critical point as in the case of the fluid-fluid transition.
A variational Monte Carlo calculation of the one-body density matrix and momentum distribution of a system of Fermi hard rods (HR) is presented and compared with the same quantities for its bosonic counterpart. The calculation is exact within statist ical errors since we sample the exact ground state wave function, whose analytical expression is known. The numerical results are in good agreement with known asymptotic expansions valid for Luttinger liquids. We find that the difference between the absolute value of the bosonic and fermionic density matrices becomes marginally small as the density increases. In this same regime, the corresponding momentum distributions merge into a common profile that is independent of the statistics. Non-analytical contributions to the one--body density matrix are also discussed and found to be less relevant with increasing density.

In a statistical ensemble with $M$ microstates, we introduce an $M times M$ correlation matrix with the correlations between microstates as its elements. Using eigenvectors of the correlation matrix, we can define eigen microstates of the ensemble. T he normalized eigenvalue by $M$ represents the weight factor in the ensemble of the corresponding eigen microstate. In the limit $M to infty$, weight factors go to zero in the ensemble without localization of microstate. The finite limit of weight factor when $M to infty$ indicates a condensation of the corresponding eigen microstate. This indicates a phase transition with new phase characterized by the condensed eigen microstate. We propose a finite-size scaling relation of weight factors near critical point, which can be used to identify the phase transition and its universality class of general complex systems. The condensation of eigen microstate and the finite-size scaling relation of weight factors have been confirmed by the Monte Carlo data of one-dimensional and two-dimensional Ising models.
The thermodynamics of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the vicinity of infinite temperature is explicitly solved in the microcanonical ensemble by means of large-deviation techniques. A first-order phase transition between a thermalized phase and a condensed (localized) one occurs at the infinite-temperature line. Inequivalence between statistical ensembles characterizes the condensed phase, where the grand-canonical representation does not apply. The control over finite size corrections of the microcanonical partition function allows to design an experimental test of delocalized negative-temperature states in lattices of cold atoms.
