We utilize the newly-acquired, ultra-deep WFC3/IR observations over the HUDF to search for star-forming galaxies at z~8-8.5, only 600 million years from recombination, using a Y_{105}-dropout selection. The new 4.7 arcmin**2 WFC3/IR observations reach to ~28.8 AB mag (5 sigma) in the Y_{105}J_{125}H_{160} bands. These remarkable data reach ~1.5 AB mag deeper than the previous data over the HUDF, and now are an excellent match to the HUDF optical ACS data. For our search criteria, we use a two-color Lyman-Break selection technique to identify z~8-8.5 Y_{105}-dropouts. We find 5 likely z~8-8.5 candidates. The sources have H_{160}-band magnitudes of ~28.3 AB mag and very blue UV-continuum slopes, with a median estimated beta of <~-2.5 (where f_{lambda}propto lambda^{beta}). This suggests that z~8 galaxies are not only essentially dust free but also may have very young ages or low metallicities. The observed number of Y_{105}-dropout candidates is smaller than the 20+/-6 sources expected assuming no evolution from z~6, but is consistent with the 5 expected extrapolating the Bouwens et al. 2008 LF results to z~8. These results provide evidence that the evolution in the LF seen from z~7 to z~3 continues to z~8. The remarkable improvement in the sensitivity of WFC3/IR has enabled HST to cross a threshold, revealing star-forming galaxies at z~8-9.

We present the results of a systematic search for galaxies in the redshift range z = 6 - 9, within the new, deep, near-infrared imaging of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field provided by the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on HST. We have performed full SED fitti ng to the optical+infrared photometry of all high-redshift galaxy candidates detected at greater than 5-sigma in at least one of the WFC3/IR broad-band filters. After rejection of contaminants, the result is a sample of 49 galaxies with primary redshift solutions z > 5.9. Our sample, selected without recourse to specific colour cuts, re-selects all but the faintest one of the 16 z-drops selected by Oesch et al. (2009), recovers all 5 of the Y-drops reported by Bouwens et al. (2009), and adds a further 29 galaxy candidates, of which 12 lie beyond z = 6.3, and 4 lie beyond z = 7. We also present confidence intervals on our photometric redshift estimates, and caution that acceptable low-redshift (z < 2) solutions exist for 28 out of the 37 galaxies at z > 6.3, and for all 8 galaxy candidates at z > 7.5. Nevertheless, the very highest redshift candidates appear to be strongly clustered in the field. We derive new estimates of the ultraviolet galaxy luminosity function at z = 7 and z = 8. Where our results are most robust, at a characteristic luminosity M(1500) ~ -19.5 (AB), we find that the comoving number density of galaxies declines by a factor of ~ 2.5 between z = 6 and z = 7, and by a further factor of ~ 2 by z = 8. These results suggest that it is difficult for the observed population of high-redshift star-forming galaxies to achieve reionisation by z ~ 6 without a significant contribution from galaxies well below the detection limits, plus alterations in the escape fraction of ionising photons and/or continued vigorous star formation at z > 15.

We identify 73 z~7 and 59 z~8 candidate galaxies in the reionization epoch, and use this large 26-29.4 AB mag sample of galaxies to derive very deep luminosity functions to <-18 AB mag and the star formation rate density at z~7 and z~8. The galaxy sa mple is derived using a sophisticated Lyman-Break technique on the full two-year WFC3/IR and ACS data available over the HUDF09 (~29.4 AB mag, 5 sigma), two nearby HUDF09 fields (~29 AB mag, 14 arcmin) and the wider area ERS (~27.5 AB mag) ~40 arcmin**2). The application of strict optical non-detection criteria ensures the contamination fraction is kept low (just ~7% in the HUDF). This very low value includes a full assessment of the contamination from lower redshift sources, photometric scatter, AGN, spurious sources, low mass stars, and transients (e.g., SNe). From careful modelling of the selection volumes for each of our search fields we derive luminosity functions for galaxies at z~7 and z~8 to <-18 AB mag. The faint-end slopes alpha at z~7 and z~8 are uncertain but very steep at alpha = -2.01+/-0.21 and alpha=-1.91+/-0.32, respectively. Such steep slopes contrast to the local alpha<~-1.4 and may even be steeper than that at z~4 where alpha=-1.73+/-0.05. With such steep slopes (alpha<~-1.7) lower luminosity galaxies dominate the galaxy luminosity density during the epoch of reionization. The star formation rate densities derived from these new z~7 and z~8 luminosity functions are consistent with the trends found at later times (lower redshifts). We find reasonable consistency, with the SFR densities implied from reported stellar mass densities, being only ~40% higher at z<7. This suggests that (1) the stellar mass densities inferred from the Spitzer IRAC photometry are reasonably accurate and (2) that the IMF at very high redshift may not be very different from that at later times.

The HUDF09 data are the deepest near-IR observations ever, reaching to 29.5 mag. Luminosity functions (LF) from these new HUDF09 data for 132 zsim7 and zsim8 galaxies are combined with new LFs for zsim5-6 galaxies and the earlier zsim4 LF to reach to very faint limits (<0.05 L*(z=3)). The faint-end slopes alpha are steep: -1.79+/-0.12 (zsim5), -1.73+/-0.20 (zsim6), -2.01+/-0.21 (zsim7), and -1.91+/-0.32 (zsim8). Slopes alphalesssim-2 lead to formally divergent UV fluxes, though galaxies are not expected to form below sim-10 AB mag. These results have important implications for reionization. The weighted mean slope at zsim6-8 is -1.87+/-0.13. For such steep slopes, and a faint-end limit of -10 AB mag, galaxies provide a very large UV ionizing photon flux. While current results show that galaxies can reionize the universe by zsim6, matching the Thomson optical depths is more challenging. Extrapolating the current LF evolution to z>8, taking alpha to be -1.87+/-0.13 (the mean value at zsim6-8), and adopting typical parameters, we derive Thomson optical depths of 0.061_{-0.006}^{+0.009}. However, this result will change if the faint-end slope alpha is not constant with redshift. We test this hypothesis and find a weak, though uncertain, trend to steeper slopes at earlier times (dalpha/dzsim-0.05+/-0.04), that would increase the Thomson optical depths to 0.079_{-0.017}^{+0.063}, consistent with recent WMAP estimates (tau=0.088+/-0.015). It may thus not be necessary to resort to extreme assumptions about the escape fraction or clumping factor. Nevertheless, the uncertainties remain large. Deeper WFC3/IR+ACS observations can further constrain the ionizing flux from galaxies.

We report the detection of color gradients in six massive (stellar mass > 10^{10} M_{sun}) and passively evolving (specific SFR < 10^{-11}/yr) galaxies at redshift 1.3<z<2.5 identified in the HUDF using HST ACS and WFC3/IR images. After matching diff erent PSFs, we obtain color maps and multi-band optical/near-IR photometry (BVizYJH) in concentric annuli, from the smallest resolved radial (~1.7 kpc) up to several times the H-band effective radius. We find that the inner regions of these galaxies have redder rest-frame UV--optical colors than the outer parts. The slopes of the color gradients mildly depend on the overall dust obscuration and rest-frame (U-V) color, with more obscured or redder galaxies having steeper color gradients. The z~2 color gradients are also steeper than those of local early-types. The gradient of a single parameter (age, extinction or metallicity) cannot fully explain the observed color gradients. Fitting spatially resolved HST seven-band photometry to stellar population synthesis models, we find that, regardless of assumptions for metallicity gradient, the redder inner regions of the galaxies have slightly higher dust obscuration than the bluer outer regions, although the magnitude depends on the assumed extinction law. The derived age gradient depends on the assumptions for metallicity gradient. We discuss the implications of a number of assumptions for metallicity gradient on the formation and evolution of these galaxies. We find that the evolution of the mass--size relationship from z~2 to z~0 cannot be driven by in--situ extended star formation, implying that accretion or merger is mostly responsible for the evolution. The lack of a correlation between color gradient and stellar mass argues against the metallicity gradient predicted by the monolithic collapse, which would require significant major mergers to evolve into the one observed at z~0. We present the rest-frame optical morphologies of active galactic nucleus (AGN) host galaxies at 1.5<z<3, using near-infrared imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3, the first such study of AGN host galaxies at these redshifts. T he AGN are X-ray selected from the Chandra Deep Field South and have typical luminosities of 1E42 < L_X < 1E44 erg/s. Accreting black holes in this luminosity and redshift range account for a substantial fraction of the total space density and black hole mass growth over cosmic time; they thus represent an important mode of black hole growth in the universe. We find that the majority (~80%) of the host galaxies of these AGN have low Sersic indices indicative of disk-dominated light profiles, suggesting that secular processes govern a significant fraction of the cosmic growth of black holes. That is, many black holes in the present-day universe grew much of their mass in disk-dominated galaxies and not in early-type galaxies or major mergers. The properties of the AGN host galaxies are furthermore indistinguishable from their parent galaxy population and we find no strong evolution in either effective radii or morphological mix between z~2 and z~0.05.
