Entanglement is the defining feature of quantum mechanics, and understanding the phenomenon is essential at the foundational level and for future progress in quantum technology. The concept of steering was introduced in 1935 by Schrodinger as a generalization of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox. Surprisingly, it has only recently been formalized as a quantum information task with arbitrary bipartite states and measurements, for which the existence of entanglement is necessary but not sufficient. Previous experiments in this area have been restricted to the approach of Reid [PRA 40, 913], which followed the original EPR argument in considering only two different measurement settings per side. Here we implement more than two settings so as to be able to demonstrate experimentally, for the first time, that EPR-steering occurs for mixed entangled states that are Bell-local (that is, which cannot possibly demonstrate Bell-nonlocality). Unlike the case of Bell inequalities, increasing the number of measurement settings beyond two--we use up to six--dramatically increases the robustness of the EPR-steering phenomenon to noise.

We investigate the steerability of two-qubit Bell-diagonal states under projective measurements by the steering party. In the simplest nontrivial scenario of two projective measurements, we solve this problem completely by virtue of the connection be tween the steering problem and the joint-measurement problem. A necessary and sufficient criterion is derived together with a simple geometrical interpretation. Our study shows that a Bell-diagonal state is steerable by two projective measurements iff it violates the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality, in sharp contrast with the strict hierarchy expected between steering and Bell nonlocality. We also introduce a steering measure and clarify its connections with concurrence and the volume of the steering ellipsoid. In particular, we determine the maximal concurrence and ellipsoid volume of Bell-diagonal states that are not steerable by two projective measurements. Finally, we explore the steerability of Bell-diagonal states under three projective measurements. A simple sufficient criterion is derived, which can detect the steerability of many states that are not steerable by two projective measurements. Our study offers valuable insight on steering of Bell-diagonal states as well as the connections between entanglement, steering, and Bell nonlocality.
Steering, a quantum property stronger than entanglement but weaker than non-locality in the quantum correlation hierarchy, is a key resource for one-sided device-independent quantum key distribution applications, in which only one of the communicatin g parties is trusted. A fine-grained steering inequality was introduced in [PRA 90 050305(R) (2014)], enabling for the first time the detection of steering in all steerable two-qubit Werner states using only two measurement settings. Here we numerically and experimentally investigate this inequality for generalized Werner states and successfully detect steerability in a wide range of two-photon polarization-entangled Bell local states generated by a parametric down-conversion source.
We derive a new steering inequality based on a fine-grained uncertainty relation to capture EPR-steering for bipartite systems. Our steering inequality improves over previously known ones since it can experimentally detect all steerable two-qubit Wer ner state with only two measurement settings on each side. According to our inequality, pure entangle states are maximally steerable. Moreover, by slightly changing the setting, we can express the amount of violation of our inequality as a function of their violation of the CHSH inequality. Finally, we prove that the amount of violation of our steering inequality is, up to a constant factor, a lower bound on the key rate of a one-sided device independent quantum key distribution protocol secure against individual attacks. To show this result, we first derive a monogamy relation for our steering inequality.
The generation and manipulation of strong entanglement and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering in macroscopic systems are outstanding challenges in modern physics. Especially, the observation of asymmetric EPR steering is important for both its fu ndamental role in interpreting the nature of quantum mechanics and its application as resource for the tasks where the levels of trust at different parties are highly asymmetric. Here, we study the entanglement and EPR steering between two macroscopic magnons in a hybrid ferrimagnet-light system. In the absence of light, the two types of magnons on the two sublattices can be entangled, but no quantum steering occurs when they are damped with the same rates. In the presence of the cavity field, the entanglement can be significantly enhanced, and strong two-way asymmetric quantum steering appears between two magnons with equal dispassion. This is very different from the conventional protocols to produce asymmetric steering by imposing additional unbalanced losses or noises on the two parties at the cost of reducing steerability. The essential physics is well understood by the unbalanced population of acoustic and optical magnons under the cooling effect of cavity photons. Our finding may provide a novel platform to manipulate the quantum steering and the detection of bi-party steering provides a knob to probe the magnetic damping on each sublattice of a magnet.
In this paper, we study the local unitary classification for pairs (triples) of generalized Bell states, based on the local unitary equivalence of two sets. In detail, we firstly introduce some general unitary operators which give us more local unita ry equivalent sets besides Clifford operators. And then we present two necessary conditions for local unitary equivalent sets which can be used to examine the local inequivalence. Following this approach, we completely classify all of pairs in $dotimes d$ quantum system into $prod_{j=1}^{n} (k_{j} + 1) $ LU-inequivalent pairs when the prime factorization of $d=prod_{j=1}^{n}p_j^{k_j}$. Moreover, all of triples in $p^alphaotimes p^alpha$ quantum system for prime $p$ can be partitioned into $frac{(alpha + 3)}{6}p^{alpha} + O(alpha p^{alpha-1})$ LU-inequivalent triples, especially, when $alpha=2$ and $p>2$, there are exactly $lfloor frac{5}{6}p^{2}rfloor + lfloor frac{p-2}{6}+(-1)^{lfloorfrac{p}{3}rfloor}frac{p}{3}rfloor + 3$ LU-inequivalent triples.
