On-chip Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) of magnetic molecules requires the ability to precisely position nanosized samples in antinodes of the electro-magnetic field for maximal magnetic interaction. A method is developed to entrap micro-crystals containing spins in a well defined location on a substrates surface. Traditional cavity ESR measurements are then performed on a mesoscopic crystal at 34 GHz. Polycrystalline diluted Cr$^{5+}$ spins were entrapped as well and measured while approaching the lower limit of the ESR sensitivity. This method suggests the feasibility of on-chip ESR measurements at dilution refrigerator temperatures by enabling the positioning of samples atop an on-chip superconducting cavity.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have excellent magnetic-temperature characteristic. However, current temperature measurement based on MNPs is interfered by concentration. Utilizing the electron spin resonance (ESR), we propose a highly sensitive temper ature measurement method without concentration coupling. The anisotropic field is affected by temperature, thus affecting the g-value. The influence of the MNP concentration, size, and the data analysis method on temperature estimation are studied. The optimal temperature sensitivity is achieved with 15-nm MNPs while Gaussian smoothing method allows an optimal accuracy at Fe concentration of 5 mg/ml with a root mean squared error of 0.07 K.
We demonstrate nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of picoliter-volume solutions with a nanostructured diamond chip. Using optical interferometric lithography, diamond surfaces were nanostructured with dense, high-aspect-ratio nanogratings, enhancing the surface area by more than a factor of 15 over mm^2 regions of the chip. The nanograting sidewalls were doped with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers so that more than 10 million NV centers in a (25 micrometer)^2 laser spot are located close enough to the diamond surface (5 nm) to detect the NMR spectrum of 1 pL of fluid lying within adjacent nanograting grooves. The platform was used to perform 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy at room temperature in magnetic fields below 50 mT. Using a solution of CsF in glycerol, we demonstrate that 4 +/- 2 x 10^12 19F spins in a 1 pL volume, can be detected with a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 in 1 s integration. This represents nearly two orders of magnitude improvement in concentration sensitivity over previous NV and picoliter NMR studies.
Nd_0.67Sr_0.33MnO_3 nanoparticles with the grain size of about 30 nm are prepared by sol-gel method. These nanopowders are annealed at four different temperatures viz. 800 oC, 900 oC, 1000 oC and 1100 oC to study the effect of particle size on magneti c, transport and electron magnetic resonance (EMR) spectral parameters. The samples are characterized by XRD, SEM, EDAX and TEM. The ac susceptibility experiments show that as the particle size increases the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature (Tc) decreases. The metal-insulator transition temperature also changes with the particle size as revealed by resistivity measurements. EMR spectra of the nanopowders are recorded from room temperature down to 4K using an X-band EPR spectrometer. the spectra could be fitted using two broad-Gaussian lineshapes below Tc and suggested the ferromagnetic nature of the samples. Above Tc a single Lorenzian fits the signals as expetced for paramagnetic samples. The EMR spectral parameters are found to be different from the bulk (polycrystalline)sample data. The spectral parameters show variation with the particle size. The presence of the two signals in the ferromagnetic phase is attributed to core and shell regions in the nanoparticles. We could estimate the shell thickness from the EMR intensity data as 0.7 - 1 nm which agrees with other measurements.
Spin resonance of single spin centers bears great potential for chemical structure analysis, quantum sensing and quantum coherent manipulation. Essential for these experiments is the presence of a two-level spin system whose energy splitting can be c hosen by applying a magnetic field. In recent years, a combination of electron spin resonance (ESR) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been demonstrated as a technique to detect magnetic properties of single atoms on surfaces and to achieve sub-${mu}$eV energy resolution. Nevertheless, up to now the role of the required magnetic fields has not been elucidated. Here, we perform single-atom ESR on individual Fe atoms adsorbed on magnesium oxide (MgO), using a 2D vector magnetic field as well as the local field of the magnetic STM tip in a commercially available STM. We show how the ESR amplitude can be greatly improved by optimizing the magnetic fields, revealing in particular an enhanced signal at large in-plane magnetic fields. Moreover, we demonstrate that the stray field from the magnetic STM tip is a versatile tool. We use it here to drive the electron spin more efficiently and to perform ESR measurements at constant frequency by employing tip-field sweeps. Lastly, we show that it is possible to perform ESR using only the tip field, under zero external magnetic field, which promises to make this technique available in many existing STM systems.

In this letter, we describe operation of a radio-frequency superconducting single electron transistor (RF-SSET) with an on-chip superconducting LC matching network consisting of a spiral inductor L and its capacitance to ground. The superconducting n etwork has a lower parasitic capacitance and gives a better matching for the RF-SSET than does a commercial chip inductor. Moreover, the superconducting network has negligibly low dissipation, leading to sensitive response to changes in the RF-SSET impedance. The charge sensitivity 2.4*10^-6 e/(Hz)^1/2 in the sub-gap region and energy sensitivity of 1.9 hbar indicate that the RF-SSET is operating in the vicinity of the shot noise limit.
