We investigate the influence of couplings among continuum states in collisions of weakly bound nuclei. For this purpose, we compare cross sections for complete fusion, breakup and elastic scattering evaluated by continuum discretized coupled channel (CDCC) calculations, including and not including these couplings. In our study, we discuss this influence in terms of the polarization potentials that reproduce the elastic wave function of the coupled coupled channel method in single channel calculations. We find that the inclusion of couplings among the continuum states renders the real part of the polarization potential more repulsive, whereas it leads to weaker apsorption to the breakup channel. We show that the non-inclusion of continuum-continuum couplings in CDCC calculations may not lead to qualitative and quantitative wrong conclusions.

The isospin breaking effects due to the Coulomb interaction in weakly-bound nuclei are studied using the Gamow Shell Model, a complex-energy configuration interaction approach which simultaneously takes into account many-body correlations between val ence nucleons and continuum effects. We investigate the near-threshold behavior of one-nucleon spectroscopic factors and the structure of wave functions along an isomultiplet. Illustrative calculations are carried out for the T=1 isobaric triplet. By using a shell-model Hamiltonian consisting of an isoscalar nuclear interaction and the Coulomb term, we demonstrate that for weakly bound or unbound systems the structure of isobaric analog states varies within the isotriplet and impacts the energy dependence of spectroscopic factors. We discuss the partial dynamical isospin symmetry present in isospin-stretched systems, in spite of the Coulomb interaction that gives rise to large mirror symmetry breaking effects.
This white paper reports on the discussions of the 2018 Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Theory Alliance (FRIB-TA) topical program From bound states to the continuum: Connecting bound state calculations with scattering and reaction theory. One of the biggest and most important frontiers in nuclear theory today is to construct better and stronger bridges between bound state calculations and calculations in the continuum, especially scattering and reaction theory, as well as teasing out the influence of the continuum on states near threshold. This is particularly challenging as many-body structure calculations typically use a bound state basis, while reaction calculations more commonly utilize few-body continuum approaches. The many-body bound state and few-body continuum methods use different language and emphasize different properties. To build better foundations for these bridges, we present an overview of several bound state and continuum methods and, where possible, point to current and possible future connections.
The optical potential of halo and weakly bound nuclei has a long range part due to the coupling to breakup that damps the elastic scattering angular distributions. In order to describe correctly the breakup channel in the case of scattering on a heav y target, core recoil effects have to be taken into account. We show here that core recoil and nuclear breakup of the valence nucleon can be consistently taken into account. A microscopic absorptive potential is obtained within a semiclassical approach and its characteristics can be understood in terms of the properties of the halo wave function and of the reaction mechanism. Results for the case of medium to high energy reactions are presented.
Nucleon-knockout reactions on proton targets (p, pN ) have experienced a renewed interest due to the availability of inverse-kinematics experiment with exotic nuclei. Various theoretical descriptions have been used to describe these reactions, such a s the Distorted-Wave Impulse Approximation (DWIA), the Faddeev-type formalism and the Transfer to the Continuum method. Our goal is to benchmark the observables computed with the Faddeev and Transfer to the Continuum formalisms in the intermediate energy regime relevant for the experimental (p, pn) and (p, 2p) studies. In this paper, we analyze the 11 Be(p,pn)10Be reaction for different beam energies, binding energies and orbital quantum numbers with both formalisms to assess their agreement for different observables. We obtain a good agreement in all cases considered, within 10%, when the input potentials are taken consistently and realistically.
The aim of this work is to develop the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc) theory based on the point-coupling density functionals and extend it to provide a unified description for all even-even nuclei in the nuclear chart by overcoming all possible challenges. The nuclear superfluidity is considered via Bogoliubov transformation. Densities and potentials are expanded in terms of Legendre polynomials to include the axial deformation degrees of freedom. Sophisticated relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov equations in coordinate space are solved in the DiracWoods-Saxon basis to consider the continuum effects. Numerical checks are performed from light nuclei to heavy nuclei. The techniques to construct the DRHBc mass table for even-even nuclei are explored. The DRHBc theory is extended to study heavier nuclei beyond magnesium isotopes. Taking Nd isotopes as examples, the experimental binding energies, two-neutron separation energies, quadrupole deformations, and charge radii are reproduced rather well. The deformation and continuum play essential roles in the description of nuclear masses and prediction of drip-line nuclei. By examining the single-particle levels in the canonical basis and their contributions to the total density, the thickness of the neutron skin, the particles number in continuum, and the Coulomb barrier, the exotic structures including the neutron skin and the proton radioactivity are predicted.
