We show that the electric field driven surface instability of visco-elastic films has two distinct regimes: (1) The visco-elastic films behaving like a liquid display long wavelengths governed by applied voltage and surface tension, independent of its elastic storage and viscous loss moduli, and (2) the films behaving like a solid require a threshold voltage for the instability whose wavelength always scales as ~ 4 x film thickness, independent of its surface tension, applied voltage, loss and storage moduli. Wavelength in a narrow transition zone between these regimes depends on the storage modulus.

Soft electroactive materials can undergo large deformation subjected to either mechanical or electrical stimulus, and hence they can be excellent candidates for designing extremely flexible and adaptive structures and devices. This paper proposes a s imple one-dimensional soft phononic crystal cylinder made of dielectric elastomer to show how large deformation and electric field can be used jointly to tune the longitudinal waves propagating in the PC. A series of soft electrodes are placed periodically along the dielectric elastomer cylinder, and hence the material can be regarded as uniform in the undeformed state. This is also the case for the uniformly pre-stretched state induced by a static axial force only. The effective periodicity of the structure is then achieved through two loading paths, i.e. by maintaining the longitudinal stretch and applying an electric voltage over any two neighbouring electrodes, or by holding the axial force and applying the voltage. All physical field variables for both configurations can be determined exactly based on the nonlinear theory of electroelasticity. An infinitesimal wave motion is further superimposed on the pre-deformed configurations and the corresponding dispersion equations are derived analytically by invoking the linearized theory for incremental motions. Numerical examples are finally considered to show the tunability of wave propagation behavior in the soft PC cylinder. The outstanding performance regarding the band gap (BG) property of the proposed soft dielectric PC is clearly demonstrated by comparing with the conventional design adopting the hard piezoelectric material. Note that soft dielectric PCs are susceptible to various kinds of failure (buckling, electromechanical instability, electric breakdown, etc.), imposing corresponding limits on the external stimuli.

In this paper, we consider the nonlinear inhomogeneous compressible elastic waves in three spatial dimensions when the density is a small disturbance around a constant state. In homogeneous case, the almost global existence was established by Klainer man-Sideris [1996_CPAM], and global existence was built by Agemi [2000_Invent. Math.] and Sideris [1996_Invent. Math., 2000_Ann. Math.] independently. Here we establish the corresponding almost global and global existence theory in the inhomogeneous case.
When an electric field is applied to an electrolyte-saturated polymer gel embedded with charged colloidal particles, the force that must be exerted by the hydrogel on each particle reflects a delicate balance of electrical, hydrodynamic and elastic s tresses. This paper examines the displacement of a single charged spherical inclusion embedded in an uncharged hydrogel. We present numerically exact solutions of coupled electrokinetic transport and elastic-deformation equations, where the gel is treated as an incompressible, elastic Brinkman medium. This model problem demonstrates how the displacement depends on the particle size and charge, the electrolyte ionic strength, and Youngs modulus of the polymer skeleton. The numerics are verified, in part, with an analytical (boundary-layer) theory valid when the Debye length is much smaller than the particle radius. Further, we identify a close connection between the displacement when a colloid is immobilized in a gel and its velocity when dispersed in a Newtonian electrolyte. Finally, we describe an experiment where nanometer-scale displacements might be accurately measured using back-focal-plane interferometry. The purpose of such an experiment is to probe physicochemical and rheological characteristics of hydrogel composites, possibly during gelation.
Acousto-elasticity is concerned with the propagation of small-amplitude waves in deformed solids. Results previously established for the incremental elastodynamics of exact non-linear elasticity are useful for the determination of third- and fourth-o rder elastic constants, especially in the case of incompressible isotropic soft solids, where the expressions are particularly simple. Specifically, it is simply a matter of expanding the expression for $rho v^2$, where $rho$ is the mass density and v the wave speed, in terms of the elongation $e$ of a block subject to a uniaxial tension. The analysis shows that in the resulting expression: $rho v^2 = a + be + ce^2$, say, $a$ depends linearly on $mu$; $b$ on $mu$ and $A$; and $c$ on $mu$, $A$, and $D$, the respective second-, third, and fourth-order constants of incompressible elasticity, for bulk shear waves and for surface waves.
In this study, thin elastic films supported on a rigid substrate are brought into contact with a spherical glass indenter. Upon contact, adhesive fingers emerge at the periphery of the contact patch with a characteristic wavelength. Elastic films are also pre-strained along one axis before initiation of contact, causing the fingering pattern to become anisotropic and align with the axis along which the strain was applied. This transition from isotropic to anisotropic patterning is characterized quantitatively and a simple model is developed to understand the origin of the anisotropy.
