We present a detailed spectral study (photoionization modelling and variability) of the Big Dipper 4U 1624-490 based on a chandra-High Energy Transmission Gratings Spectrometer (HETGS) observation over the $sim76$ ks binary orbit of 4U 1624-490. While the continuum spectrum can be modeled using a blackbody plus power-law, a slightly better fit is obtained using a single $Gamma=2.25$ power-law partially (71%) covered by a local absorber of column density $N_{rm H, Local}=8.1_{-0.6}^{+0.7}times 10^{22} rm cm^{-2}$. The data show a possible quasi-sinusoidal modulation with period $43_{-9}^{+13}$ ks that might be due to changes in local obscuration. Photoionization modeling with the {sc xstar} code and variability studies of the observed strong ion{Fe}{25} and ion{Fe}{26} absorption lines point to a two-temperature plasma for their origin: a highly ionized component of ionization parameter $xi_{rm hot} approx 10^{4.3} {rm ergs cm s^{-1}}$ ($Tsim 3.0times 10^{6}$ K) associated with an extended accretion disk corona of radius $R sim3times10^{10}$ cm, and a less ionized more variable component of $xi approx 10^{3.4} {rm ergs cm s^{-1}}$ ($Tsim 1.0times 10^{6}$ K) and $rm xi approx 10^{3.1} ergs cm s^{-1}$ ($Tsim 0.9times 10^{6}$ K) coincident with the accretion disk rim. We use this, with the observed ion{Fe}{25} and ion{Fe}{26} absorption line variations (in wavelength, strength, and width) to construct a viewing geometry that is mapped to changes in plasma conditions over the 4U 1624-490 orbital period.

We present the results of a 73 ks long Chandra observation of the dipping source X 1624-490. During the observation a complex dip lasting 4 hours is observed. We analyse the persistent emission detecting, for the first time in the 1st-order spectra o f X 1624-490, an absorption line associated to ion{Ca}{xx}. We confirm the presence of the ion{Fe}{xxv} K$_alpha$ and ion{Fe}{xxvi} K$_alpha$ absorption lines with a larger accuracy with respect to a previous XMM observation. Assuming that the line widths are due to a bulk motion or a turbulence associated to the coronal activity, we estimate that the lines have been produced in a photoionized absorber between the coronal radius and the outer edge of the accretion disk.
Accretion flows toward black holes can be of a quite different nature, described as an optically thick cool gas flow in a disk for high accretion rates or as a hot coronal optically thin gas flow for low accretion rates, possibly affected by outflowi ng gas. The detection of broad iron emission lines in active galactic nuclei (AGN) indicates the coexistence of corona and disk. The appearance and relative strength of such flows essentially depends on their interaction. Liu et al. suggested that condensation of gas from the corona to the disk allows to understand accretion flows of comparable strength of emission. Matter inflow due to gravitational capture of gas is important for the condensation process. We discuss observational features predicted by the model. Data from simultaneous observations of AGN with {it {Swifts}} X-ray and UV-optical telescopes are compared with the theoretical predictions. The frequent detection of broad iron K$alpha$ emission lines and the dependence of the emitted spectra on the Eddington ratio, described by the values of the photon index $Gamma$ and the two-point spectral index $alpha_{rm{ox}}$ are in approximate agreement with the predictions of the condensation model; the latter, however, with a large scatter. The model further yields a coronal emission concentrated in a narrow inner region as is also deduced from the analysis of emissivity profiles. The accretion flows in bright AGN could be described by the accretion of stellar wind or interstellar medium and its condensation into a thin disk.
We model an accretion disk atmosphere and corona photoionized by a central X-ray continuum source. We calculate the opacity and radiation transfer for an array of disk radii, to obtain the two-dimensional structure of the disk and its X-ray recombina tion emission. The atmospheric structure is insensitive to the viscosity alpha. We find a feedback mechanism between the disk structure and the central illumination, which expands the disk and increases the solid angle subtended by the atmosphere. We model the disk of a neutron star X-ray binary. We map the temperature, density, and ionization structure of the disk, and we simulate the high resolution spectra observable with the Chandra and XMM-Newton grating spectrometers. The X-ray emission lines from the disk atmosphere are detectable, especially for high-inclination binary systems. The grating observations of two classes of X-ray binaries already reveal important spectral similarities with our models. The line spectrum is very sensitive to the structure of each atmospheric layer, and it probes the heating mechanisms in the disk. The model spectrum is dominated by double-peaked lines of H-like and He-like ions, plus weak Fe L. Species with a broad range of ionization levels coexist at each radius: from Fe XXVI in the hot corona, to C VI at the base of the atmosphere. The choice of stable solutions affects the spectrum, since a thermal instability is present in the regime where the X-ray recombination emission is most intense.
The mechanisms that drive disk winds are a window into the physical processes that underlie the disk. Stellar-mass black holes are an ideal setting in which to explore these mechanisms, in part because their outbursts span a broad range in mass accre tion rate. We performed a spectral analysis of the disk wind found in six Chandra/HETG observations of the black hole candidate 4U~1630$-$472, covering a range of luminosities over two distinct spectral states. We modeled both wind absorption and extended wind re-emission components using PION, a self-consistent photoionized absorption model. In all but one case, two photoionization zones were required in order to obtain acceptable fits. Two independent constraints on launching radii, obtained via the ionization parameter formalism and the dynamical broadening of the re-emission, helped characterize the geometry of the wind. The innermost wind components ($r simeq {10}^{2-3}$ $GM/{c}^{2}$) tend towards small volume filling factors, high ionization, densities up to $n simeq {10}^{15-16} {text{cm}}^{-3}$, and outflow velocities of $sim 0.003c$. These small launching radii and large densities require magnetic driving, as they are inconsistent with numerical and analytical treatments of thermally driven winds. Outer wind components ($r simeq {10}^{5}$ $GM/{c}^{2}$) are significantly less ionized and have filling factors near unity. Their larger launching radii, lower densities ($n simeq {10}^{12} {text{cm}}^{-3}$), and outflow velocities ($sim 0.0007c$) are nominally consistent with thermally driven winds. The overall wind structure suggests that these components may also be part of a broader MHD outflow and perhaps better described as magneto-thermal hybrid winds.

The rest-frame UV/optical variability of the quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 is used to test the Corona-Heated Accretion-disk Reprocessing (CHAR) model of Sun et al. 2020. We adopt our CHAR model and the observed black-hole m asses ($M_{mathrm{BH}}$) and luminosities ($L$) to generate mock light curves that share the same measurement noise and sampling as the real observations. Without any fine-tuning, our CHAR model can satisfactorily reproduce the observed ensemble structure functions for different $M_{mathrm{BH}}$, $L$, and rest-frame wavelengths. Our analyses reveal that a luminosity-dependent bolometric correction is disfavored over the constant bolometric correction for UV/optical luminosities. Our work demonstrates the possibility of extracting quasar properties (e.g., the bolometric correction or the dimensionless viscosity parameter) by comparing the physical CHAR model with quasar light curves.
