We provide insight into the qubit measurement process involving a switching type of detector. We study the switching-induced decoherence during escape events. We present a simple method to obtain analytical results for the qubit dephasing and bit-flip errors, which can be easily adapted to various systems. Within this frame we investigate potential of switching detectors for a fast but only weakly invasive type of detection. We show that the mechanism that leads to strong dephasing, and thus fast measurement, inverts potential bit flip errors due to an intrinsic approximate time reversal symmetry.

We have investigated decoherence in Josephson-junction flux qubits. Based on the measurements of decoherence at various bias conditions, we discriminate contributions of different noise sources. In particular, we present a Gaussian decay function of the echo signal as evidence of dephasing due to $1/f$ flux noise whose spectral density is evaluated to be about $(10^{-6} Phi_0)^2$/Hz at 1 Hz. We also demonstrate that at an optimal bias condition where the noise sources are well decoupled the coherence observed in the echo measurement is mainly limited by energy relaxation of the qubit.

We consider the problem of quasiparticle poisoning in a nanowire-based realization of a Majorana qubit, where a spin-orbit-coupled semiconducting wire is placed on top of a (bulk) superconductor. By making use of recent experimental data exhibiting e vidence of a low-temperature residual non-equilibrium quasiparticle population in superconductors, we show by means of analytical and numerical calculations that the dephasing time due to the tunneling of quasiparticles into the nanowire may be problematically short to allow for qubit manipulation.
We find that stray infrared light from the 4 K stage in a cryostat can cause significant loss in superconducting resonators and qubits. For devices shielded in only a metal box, we measured resonators with quality factors Q = 10^5 and qubits with ene rgy relaxation times T_1=120 ns, consistent with a stray light-induced quasiparticle density of 170-230 mu m^{-3}. By adding a second black shield at the sample temperature, we found about an order of magnitude improvement in performance and no sensitivity to the 4 K radiation. We also tested various shielding methods, implying a lower limit of Q = 10^8 due to stray light in the light-tight configuration.
We analyze the operation of a switching-based detector that probes a qubits observable that does not commute with the qubits Hamiltonian, leading to a nontrivial interplay between the measurement and free-qubit dynamics. In order to obtain analytic r esults and develop intuitive understanding of the different possible regimes of operation, we use a theoretical model where the detector is a quantum two-level system that is constantly monitored by a macroscopic system. We analyze how to interpret the outcome of the measurement and how the state of the qubit evolves while it is being measured. We find that the answers to the above questions depend on the relation between the different parameters in the problem. In addition to the traditional strong-measurement regime, we identify a number of regimes associated with weak qubit-detector coupling. An incoherent detector whose switching time is measurable with high accuracy can provide high-fidelity information, but the measurement basis is determined only upon switching of the detector. An incoherent detector whose switching time can be known only with low accuracy provides a measurement in the qubits energy eigenbasis with reduced measurement fidelity. A coherent detector measures the qubit in its energy eigenbasis and, under certain conditions, can provide high-fidelity information.

The efficiency of the future devices for quantum information processing is limited mostly by the finite decoherence rates of the qubits. Recently a substantial progress was achieved in enhancing the time, which a solid-state qubit demonstrates a cohe rent dynamics. This progress is based mostly on a successful isolation of the qubits from external decoherence sources. Under these conditions the material-inherent sources of noise start to play a crucial role. In most cases the noise that quantum device demonstrate has 1/f spectrum. This suggests that the environment that destroys the phase coherence of the qubit can be thought of as a system of two-state fluctuators, which experience random hops between their states. In this short review we discuss the current state of the theory of the decoherence due to the qubit interaction with the fluctuators. We describe the effect of such an environment on different protocols of the qubit manipulations - free induction and echo signal. It turns out that in many important cases the noise produced by the fluctuators is non-Gaussian. Consequently the results of the interaction of the qubit with the fluctuators are not determined by the pair correlation function only. We describe the effect of the fluctuators using so-called spin-fluctuator model. Being quite realistic this model allows one to evaluate the qubit dynamics in the presence of one fluctuator exactly. This solution is found, and its features, including non-Gaussian effects are analyzed in details. We extend this consideration for the systems of large number of fluctuators, which interact with the qubit and lead to the 1/f noise. We discuss existing experiments on the Josephson qubit manipulation and try to identify non-Gaussian behavior.
