We show that the synchronized states of two systems of identical chaotic maps subject to either, a common drive that acts with a probability p in time or to the same drive acting on a fraction p of the maps, are similar. The synchronization behavior of both systems can be inferred by considering the dynamics of a single chaotic map driven with a probability p. The synchronized states for these systems are characterized on their common space of parameters. Our results show that the presence of a common external drive for all times is not essential for reaching synchronization in a system of chaotic oscillators, nor is the simultaneous sharing of the drive by all the elements in the system. Rather, a crucial condition for achieving synchronization is the sharing of some minimal, average information by the elements in the system over long times.

Synchronization dynamics of mutually coupled chaotic semiconductor lasers are investigated experimentally and compared to identical synchronization of unidirectionally coupled lasers. Mutual coupling shows high quality synchronization in a broad rang e of self-feedback and coupling strengths. It is found to be tolerant to significant parameter mismatch which for unidirectional coupling would result in loss of synchronization. The advantages of mutual coupling are emphasized in light of its potential use in chaos communications.
Zero-lag synchronization (ZLS) is achieved in a very restricted mutually coupled chaotic systems, where the delays of the self-coupling and the mutual coupling are identical or fulfil some restricted ratios. Using a set of multiple self-feedbacks we demonstrate both analytically and numerically that ZLS is achieved for a wide range of mutual delays. It indicates that ZLS can be achieved without the knowledge of the mutual distance between the communicating partners and has an important implication in the possible use of ZLS in communications networks as well as in the understanding of the emergence of such synchronization in the neuronal activities.
Two symmetrically coupled populations of N oscillators with inertia $m$ display chaotic solutions with broken symmetry similar to experimental observations with mechanical pendula. In particular, we report the first evidence of intermittent chaotic c himeras, where one population is synchronized and the other jumps erratically between laminar and turbulent phases. These states have finite life-times diverging as a power-law with N and m. Lyapunov analyses reveal chaotic properties in quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions for globally coupled dissipative systems.
This paper deals with two types of synchronous behavior of chaotic oscillators -- generalized synchronization and noise--induced synchronization. It has been shown that both these types of synchronization are caused by similar mechanisms and should b e considered as the same type of the chaotic oscillator behavior. The mechanisms resulting in the generalized synchronization are mostly similar to ones taking place in the case of the noise-induced synchronization with biased noise.
A new method of virtual unknown parameter is proposed to synchronize two different systems with unknown parameters and disturbance in finite time. Virtual unknown parameters are introduced in order to avoid the unknown parameters from appearing in th e controllers and parameters update laws when the adaptive control method is applied. A single virtual unknown parameter is used in the design of adaptive controllers and parameters update laws if the Lipschitz constant on the nonlinear function can be found, while multiple virtual unknown parameters are adopted if the Lipschitz constant cannot be determined. Numerical simulations show that the present method does make the two different chaotic systems synchronize in finite time.
