We propose a concise approximate description, and a method for efficiently obtaining this description, via adaptive random sampling of the performance (running time, memory consumption, or any other profileable numerical quantity) of a given algorithm on some low-dimensional rectangular grid of inputs. The formal correctness is proven under reasonable assumptions on the algorithm under consideration; and the approachs practical benefit is demonstrated by predicting for which observer positions and viewing directions an occlusion culling algorithm yields a net performance benefit or loss compared to a simple brute force renderer.

The notion of computer capacity was proposed in 2012, and this quantity has been estimated for computers of different kinds. In this paper we show that, when designing new processors, the manufacturers change the parameters that affect the computer capacity. This allows us to predict the values of parameters of future processors. As the main example we use Intel processors, due to the accessibility of detailed description of all their technical characteristics.
We present the AMPS algorithm, a finite element solution method that combines principal submatrix updates and Schur complement techniques, well-suited for interactive simulations of deformation and cutting of finite element meshes. Our approach featu res real-time solutions to the updated stiffness matrix systems to account for interactive changes in mesh connectivity and boundary conditions. Updates are accomplished by an augmented matrix formulation of the stiffness equations to maintain its consistency with changes to the underlying model without refactorization at each timestep. As changes accumulate over multiple simulation timesteps, the augmented solution algorithm enables tens or hundreds of updates per second. Acceleration schemes that exploit sparsity, memoization and parallelization lead to the updates being computed in real-time. The complexity analysis and experimental results for this method demonstrate that it scales linearly with the problem size. Results for cutting and deformation of 3D elastic models are reported for meshes with node counts up to 50,000, and involve models of astigmatism surgery and the brain.
Triangulated meshes have become ubiquitous discrete-surface representations. In this paper we address the problem of how to maintain the manifold properties of a surface while it undergoes strong deformations that may cause topological changes. We in troduce a new self-intersection removal algorithm, TransforMesh, and we propose a mesh evolution framework based on this algorithm. Numerous shape modelling applications use surface evolution in order to improve shape properties, such as appearance or accuracy. Both explicit and implicit representations can be considered for that purpose. However, explicit mesh representations, while allowing for accurate surface modelling, suffer from the inherent difficulty of reliably dealing with self-intersections and topological changes such as merges and splits. As a consequence, a majority of methods rely on implicit representations of surfaces, e.g. level-sets, that naturally overcome these issues. Nevertheless, these methods are based on volumetric discretizations, which introduce an unwanted precision-complexity trade-off. The method that we propose handles topological changes in a robust manner and removes self intersections, thus overcoming the traditional limitations of mesh-based approaches. To illustrate the effectiveness of TransforMesh, we describe two challenging applications, namely surface morphing and 3-D reconstruction.
Radiative transfer has a strong impact on the collapse and the fragmentation of prestellar dense cores. We present the radiation-hydrodynamics solver we designed for the RAMSES code. The method is designed for astrophysical purposes, and in particula r for protostellar collapse. We present the solver, using the co-moving frame to evaluate the radiative quantities. We use the popular flux limited diffusion approximation, under the grey approximation (one group of photon). The solver is based on the second-order Godunov scheme of RAMSES for its hyperbolic part, and on an implicit scheme for the radiation diffusion and the coupling between radiation and matter. We report in details our methodology to integrate the RHD solver into RAMSES. We test successfully the method against several conventional tests. For validation in 3D, we perform calculations of the collapse of an isolated 1 M_sun prestellar dense core, without rotation. We compare successfully the results with previous studies using different models for radiation and hydrodynamics. We have developed a full radiation hydrodynamics solver in the RAMSES code, that handles adaptive mesh refinement grids. The method is a combination of an explicit scheme and an implicit scheme, accurate to the second-order in space. Our method is well suited for star formation purposes. Results of multidimensional dense core collapse calculations with rotation are presented in a companion paper.
We demonstrate how interactive, three-dimensional (3-d) scientific visualizations can be efficiently interchanged between a variety of mediums. Through the use of an appropriate interchange format, and a unified interaction interface, we minimize the effort to produce visualizations appropriate for undertaking knowledge discovery at the astronomers desktop, as part of conference presentations, in digital publications or as Web content. We use examples from cosmological visualization to address some of the issues of interchange, and to describe our approach to adapting S2PLOT desktop visualizations to the Web. Supporting demonstrations are available at http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/s2plot/interchange/
