We report on the first detailed study of the mechanisms involved in knockout reactions, via a coincidence measurement of the residue and fast proton in one-proton knockout reactions, using the S800 spectrograph in combination with the HiRA detector array at the NSCL. Results on the reactions $^9$Be($^9$C,$^8$B+X)Y and $^9$Be($^8$B,$^7$Be+X)Y are presented. They are compared with theoretical predictions for both the diffraction and stripping reaction mechanisms, as calculated in the eikonal model. The data shows a clear distinction between the two reaction mechanisms, and the observed respective proportions are very well reproduced by the reaction theory. This agreement supports the results of knockout reaction analyses and their applications to the spectroscopy of rare isotopes.

The structure of $^{33}$Mg was investigated by means of two knockout reactions, one-neutron removal from $^{34}$Mg and one-proton removal from $^{34}$Al. Using comparative analysis of the population of observed excited states in the residual $^{33}$M g, the nature of these states can be deciphered. In addition, the long-standing controversy about the parity of the $^{33}$Mg ground state is resolved using momentum distribution analysis, showing a clear signature for negative parity. Partial cross section measurements are compared with the results of eikonal reaction theory combined with large-scale shell model calculations of this complex nucleus located in the island of inversion, where configuration mixing plays a major role.

The two-proton knockout reaction 9Be(26Ne,O2p) was used to explore excited unbound states of 23O and 24O. In 23O a state at an excitation energy of 2.79(13) MeV was observed. There was no conclusive evidence for the population of excited states in 24O.

We develop a fully relativistic DWIA model for photonuclear reactions using the relativistic mean field theory for the bound state and the Pauli reduction of the scattering state which is calculated from a relativistic optical potential. Results for the 12C(gamma,p) and 16O(gamma,p) differential cross sections and photon asymmetries are displayed in a photon energy range between 60 and 257 MeV, and compared with nonrelativistic DWIA calculations. The effects of the spinor distortion and of the effective momentum approximation for the scattering state are discussed. The sensitivity of the model to different prescriptions for the one-body current operator is investigated. The off-shell ambiguities are large in (gamma,p) calculations, and even larger in (gamma,n) knockout.
We report on the in-beam gamma spectroscopy of $^{102}$Sn and $^{100}$Cd produced via two-neutron removal from carbon and CH$_2$ targets at about 150 MeV/nucleon beam energy. New transitions assigned to the decay of a second 2$^+$ excited state at 24 70(60) keV in $^{102}$Sn were observed. Two-neutron removal cross sections from $^{104}$Sn and $^{102}$Cd have been extracted. The enhanced cross section to the 2$^+_2$ in $^{102}$Sn populated via the $(p,p2n)$ reaction is traced back to an increase of shell-model structure overlaps, consistent with the hypothesis that the proton-induced two-deeply-bound-nucleon removal mechanism is of direct nature.
The neutron-rich Ni isotopes have attracted attention in recent years due to the occurrence of shape or configuration coexistence. We report on the difference in population of excited final states in 70Ni following gamma-ray tagged one-proton, one-ne utron, and two-proton knockout from 71Cu, 71Ni, and 72Zn rare-isotope beams, respectively. Using variations observed in the relative transition intensities, signaling the changed population of specific final states in the different reactions, the role of neutron and proton configurations in excited states of 70Ni is probed schematically, with the goal of identifying those that carry, as leading configuration, proton excitations across the Z = 28 shell closure. Such states are suggested in the literature to form a collective structure associated with prolate deformation. Adding to the body of knowledge for 70Ni, 29 new transitions are reported, of which 15 are placed in its level scheme.
