Microstructure changes during annealing of nano-crystalline silver and amorphous silicon multilayers (Ag/a-Si) have been studied by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The dc-magnetron sputtered Ag/a-Si multilayers remained stable even after annealing at 523K for 10h, and microstructural changes occurred only above 600K. The degradation of Ag/a-Si multilayers can be described by the increase of size of Ag grains, formation of grooves and pinholes at Ag grain boundaries and by the diffusion of silicon atoms through the silver grain boundaries and along the Ag/a-Si interfaces. This results in thinning of a-Si layers, and in formation of Ag granulates after longer annealing times.

A study is presented of the structural changes occurring as a function of the annealing conditions in hydrogenated amorphous Si/Ge multilayers prepared by sputtering. Annealing changes the structure of the as-deposited multilayer except for the less severe conditions here applied (150 oC, time<22 h). For higher temperatures and/or times, the modifications consist of layer intermixing and surface degradation in the shape of bumps and craters. They are argued to be due to the formation of H bubbles upon heating. Hydrogen should be mostly released from the amorphous Ge layers.

Results of magnetization, magnetotransport and Mossbauer spectroscopy measurements of sequentially evaporated Fe-Ag granular composites are presented. The strong magnetic scattering of the conduction electrons is reflected in the sublinear temperatur e dependence of the resistance and in the large negative magnetoresistance. The simultaneous analysis of the magnetic properties and the transport behavior suggests a bimodal grain size distribution. A detailed quantitative description of the unusual features observed in the transport properties is given.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of submonolayer heteroepitaxial growth of Ag on Si(111)-7x7 at temperatures from 420 K to 550 K when Ag atoms can easily diffuse on the surface and the reconstruction 7x7 remains stable. STM me asurements for coverages from 0.05 ML to 0.6 ML show that there is an excess of smallest islands (each of them fills up just one half-unit cell - HUC) in all stages of growth. Formation of 2D wetting layer proceeds by continuous nucleation of the smallest islands in the proximity of larger 2D islands (extended over several HUCs) and following coalescence with them. Such a growth scenario is verified by kinetic Monte Carlo simulation which uses a coarse-grained model based on a limited capacity of HUC and a mechanism which increases nucleation probability in a neighbourhood of already saturated HUCs (correlated nucleation). The model provides a good fit for experimental dependences of the relative number of Ag-occupied HUCs and the preference in occupation of faulted HUCs on temperature and amount of deposited Ag. Parameters obtained for the hopping of Ag adatoms between HUCs agree with those reported earlier for initial stages of growth. The model provides two new parameters - maximum number of Ag atoms inside HUC, and on HUC boundary.

A set of Mo/Si periodic multilayers is studied by non destructive analysis methods. The thickness of the Si layers is 5 nm while the thickness of the Mo layers changes from one multilayer to another, from 2 to 4 nm. This enables us to probe the effec t of the transition between the amorphous to crystalline state of the Mo layers near the interfaces with Si on the optical performances of the multilayers. This transition results in the variation of the refractive index (density variation) of the Mo layers, as observed by x-ray reflectivity (XRR) at a wavelength of 0.154 nm. Combining x-ray emission spectroscopy and XRR, the parameters (composition, thickness and roughness) of the interfacial layers formed by the interaction between the Mo and Si layers are determined. However, these parameters do not evolve significantly as a function of the Mo thickness. It is observed by diffuse scattering at 1.33 nm that the lateral correlation length of the roughness strongly decreases when the Mo thickness goes from 2 to 3 nm. This is due to the development of Mo crystallites parallel to the multilayer surface.
The shape and alignment of silver nanoparticles embedded in a glass matrix is controlled using silicon ion irradiation. Symmetric silver nanoparticles are transformed into anisotropic particles whose larger axis is along the ion beam. Upon irradiatio n, the surface plasmon resonance of symmetric particles splits into two resonances whose separation depends on the fluence of the ion irradiation. Simulations of the optical absorbance show that the anisotropy is caused by the deformation and alignment of the nanoparticles, and that both properties are controlled with the irradiation fluence.
