Using micron-sized Hall sensor arrays to obtain time-resolved measurements of the local magnetization, we report a systematic study in the molecular magnet Mn$_{12}$-acetate of magnetic avalanches controllably triggered in different fixed external magnetic fields and for different values of the initial magnetization. The speeds of propagation of the spin-reversal fronts are in good overall agreement with the theory of magnetic deflagration of Garanin and Chudnovsky cite{Garanin}.

Using micron-sized thermometers and Hall bars, we report time-resolved studies of the local temperature and local magnetization for two types of magnetic avalanches (abrupt spin reversals) in the molecular magneti Mn12-acetate, corresponding to avala nches of the main slow-relaxing crystalline form and avalanches of the fast-relaxing minor species that exists in all as-grown crystals of this material. An experimental protocol is used that allows the study of each type of avalanche without triggering avalanches in the other, and of both types of avalanches simultaneously. In samples prepared magnetically to enable both types of avalanches, minor species avalanches are found to act as a catalyst for the major species avalanches. magnetically to enable both types of avalanches, minor species avalanches are found to act as a catalyst for the major species avalanches.
The propagation of edge localized spin waves (E-SWs) in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) microstripes with/without the proximate magnetic microstructures is investigated by micromagnetic simulations. A splitting of the dispersion curve with the presence of permalloy (Py) stripe is also observed. The E-SWs on the two edges of YIG stripe have different wavelengths, group velocities, and decay lengths at the same frequencies. The role of the Py stripe was found to be the source of the inhomogeneous static dipolar field without dynamic coupling with YIG. This work opens new perspectives for the design of innovative SW interference-based logic devices.
We have developed a fully microscopic theory of magnetic properties of the prototype molecular magnet Mn12. First, the intra-molecular magnetic properties have been studied by means of first-principles density functional-based methods, with local cor relation effects being taken into account within the local density approximation plus U (LDA+U) approach. Using the magnetic force theorem, we have calculated the interatomic isotropic and anisotropic exchange interactions and full tensors of single-ion anisotropy for each Mn ion. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction parameters turned out to be unusually large, reflecting a low symmetry of magnetic pairs in molecules, in comparison with bulk crystals. Based on these results we predict a distortion of ferrimagnetic ordering due to DM interactions. Further, we use an exact diagonalization approach allowing to work with as large Hilbert space dimension as 10^8 without any particular symmetry (the case of the constructed magnetic model). Based on the computational results for the excitation spectrum, we propose a distinct interpretation of the experimental inelastic neutron scattering spectra.
The dipolar interaction is known to substantially affect the properties of magnetic nanoparticles. This is particularly important when the particles are kept in a fluid suspension or packed inside nano-carriers. In addition to its usual long-range na ture, in these cases the dipolar interaction may also induce the formation of clusters of particles, thereby strongly modifying their magnetic anisotropies. In this paper we show how AC susceptibility may be used to obtain important information regarding the influence of the dipolar interaction in a sample. We develop a model which includes both aspects of the dipolar interaction and may be fitted directly to the susceptibility data. The usual long-range nature of the interaction is implemented using a mean-field solution, whereas the particle-particle aggregation is modeled using a distribution of anisotropy constants. The model is then applied to two samples studied at different concentrations. One consists of spherical magnetite nanoparticles dispersed in oil and the other of cubic magnetite nanoparticles embedded on PLGA nanospheres. We also introduce a simple technique to access the importance of the dipolar interaction in a given sample, based on the height of the AC susceptibility peaks for different driving frequencies. Our results help illustrate the important effect that the dipolar interaction has in most nanoparticle samples.
We demonstrate that the different magnetic states of a Mn12 molecule can be distinguished in a two-probe transport experiment from a complete knowledge of the current-voltage curve. Our results, obtained with state-of-the-art non-equilibrium transpor t methods combined with density functional theory, demonstrate that spin configuration-specific negative differential resistances (NDRs) appear in the I-V curves. These originate from the interplay between electron localization and the re-hybridization of the molecular levels in an external electric field and allow the detection of the molecules spin-state.
