We present high angular resolution observations of HC$_3$N J=5--4 line and 7 mm continumm emission from the extreme carbon star CIT 6. We find that the 7 mm continuum emission is unresolved and has a flux consistent with black-body thermal radiation from the central star. The HC$_3$N J=5--4 line emission originates from an asymmetric and clumpy expanding envelope comprising two separate shells of HC$_3$N J=5--4 emission: (i) a faint outer shell that is nearly spherical which has a radius of 8arcsec; and (ii) a thick and incomplete inner shell that resembles a one-arm spiral starting at or close to the central star and extending out to a radius of about 5arcsec. Our observations therefore suggest that the mass loss from CIT 6 is strongly modulated with time and highly anisotropic. Furthermore, a comparison between the data and our excitation modelling results suggests an unusually high abundance of HC$_3$N in its envelope. We discuss the possibility that the envelope might be shaped by the presence of a previously suggested possible binary companion. The abundance of HC$_3$N may be enhanced in spiral shocks produced by the interaction between the circumstellar envelope of CIT 6 and its companion star.

We present multi-epoch, diffraction-limited images of the nebula around the carbon star CIT 6 at 2.2 microns and 3.1 microns from aperture masking on the Keck-I telescope. The near-IR nebula is resolved into two main components, an elongated, bright feature showing time-variable asymmetry and a fainter component about 60 milliarcseconds away with a cooler color temperature. These images were precisely registered (~35 milliarcseconds) with respect to recent visible images from the Hubble Space Telescope (Trammell et al. 2000), which showed a bipolar structure in scattered light. The dominant near-IR feature is associated with the northern lobe of this scattering nebula, and the multi-wavelength dataset can be understood in terms of a bipolar dust shell around CIT 6. Variability of the near-IR morphology is qualitatively consistent with previously observed changes in red polarization, caused by varying illumination geometry due to non-uniform dust production. The blue emission morphology and polarization properties can not be explained by the above model alone, but require the presence of a wide binary companion in the vicinity of the southern polar lobe. The physical mechanisms responsible for the breaking of spherical symmetry around extreme carbon stars, such as CIT 6 and IRC+10216, remain uncertain.

CIT 6 is a carbon star in the transitional phase from the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) to the protoplanetary nebulae (pPN). Observational evidences of two point sources in the optical, circumstellar arc segments in an HC$_3$N line emission, and a bi polar nebula in near-infrared provide strong support for the presence of a binary companion. Hence, CIT 6 is very attractive for studying the role of companions in the AGB-pPN transition. We have carried out high resolution $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$ and $^{13}$CO $J=2-1$ observations of CIT 6 with the Submillimeter Array combined with the Submillimeter Telescope (single-dish) data. The $^{12}$CO channel maps reveal a spiral-shell pattern connecting the HC$_3$N segments in a continuous form, and an asymmetric outflow corresponding to the near-infrared bipolar nebula. Rotation of the $^{12}$CO channel peak position may be related to the inner spiral winding and/or the bipolar outflow. An eccentric orbit binary is suggested for the presences of an anisotropic mass loss to the west and a double spiral pattern. The lack of interarm emission to the west may indicate a feature corresponding to the periastron passage of a highly eccentric orbit of the binary. Spatially-averaged radial and spectral profiles of $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$ and $^{13}$CO $J=2-1$ are compared with simple spherical radiative transfer models, suggesting a change of $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO abundance ratio from $sim30$ to $sim50$ inward in the CSE of CIT 6. The millimeter continuum emission is decomposed into extended dust thermal emission (spectral index $sim-2.4$) and compact emission from radio photosphere (spectral index $sim-2.0$).
ALMA observations of CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emissions of the circumstellar envelope of EP Aqr, an oxygen-rich AGB star, are reported. A thorough analysis of their properties is presented using an original method based on the separation of the data-cube into a low velocity component associated with an equatorial outflow and a faster component associated with a bipolar outflow. A number of important and new results are obtained concerning the distribution in space of the effective emissivity, the temperature, the density and the flux of matter. A mass loss rate of (1.6$pm$0.4)10$^{-7}$ solar masses per year is measured. The main parameters defining the morphology and kinematics of the envelope are evaluated and uncertainties inherent to de-projection are critically discussed. Detailed properties of the equatorial region of the envelope are presented including a measurement of the line width and a precise description of the observed inhomogeneity of both morphology and kinematics. In particular, in addition to the presence of a previously observed spiral enhancement of the morphology at very small Doppler velocities, a similarly significant but uncorrelated circular enhancement of the expansion velocity is revealed, both close to the limit of sensitivity. The results of the analysis place significant constraints on the parameters of models proposing descriptions of the mass loss mechanism, but cannot choose among them with confidence.
MWC158 is a star with the B[e] phenomenon that shows strong spectrophotometric variability (in lines and in UV and visible continuum) attributed to phases of shell ejection. The evolutionary stage of this star was never clearly determined. Previous i nterferometric, spectropolarimetric and spectro-interferometric studies suggest a disk morphology for its environment. We investigate the origin of the variability within the inner astronomical unit of the central star using near-infrared interferometric observations with PIONIER at the VLTI over a two-year period. We performed an image reconstruction of the circumstellar environment using the SPARCO method. We discovered that the morphology of the circumstellar environment could vary on timescales of weeks or days. We carried out a parametric fit of the data with a model consisting of a star, a disk and a bright spot that represents a brighter emission in the disk. We detect strong morphological changes in the first astronomical unit around the star, that happen on a timescale of few months. We cannot account for such variability well with a binary model. Our parametric model fits the data well and allows us to extract the location of the asymmetry for different epochs. For the first time, we detect a morphological variability in the environment of MWC158. This variability is reproduced by a model of a disk and a bright spot. The locations of the bright spot suggest that it is located in the disk, but its precise motion is not determined. The origin of the asymmetry in the disk is complex and may be related to asymmetric shell ejections.
Using the partially completed Submillimeter Array with five antennas, we have observed the CO J=2-1 and 3-2 emission from the envelope surrounding the carbon star V Hya. The high-angular resolution (2-4) maps show that V Hya is powering a bipolar mol ecular jet having an extreme velocity of 70-185 km/s. The axis of this high velocity jet is perpendicular to the major axis of the flattened disk-like envelope, which is expanding with a velocity of ~16 km/s.There is a third kinematic component, a medium-velocity wind having a deprojected velocity of 40-120 km/s moving along the disk plane. Both the high velocity jet and the medium velocity wind have a dynamical time scale of a few hundred years. The flattened structure and the collimated jet observed in V Hya suggests that the formation of asymmetrical structure proceeds while the central star is still in the AGB phase
