Dielectric response e*(f,T) and polar phonon spectra of coarse grain (grain size ~ 4 mkm) and fine grain (grain size ~ 150 nm) ceramics of PbMg_(1/3)Nb_(2/3)O3-35%PbTiO3 were investigated at temperatures 10 - 900 K. e*(f,T) in coarse-grain ceramics exhibits relaxor behavior at high temperatures and a sharp anomaly at the ferroelectric phase transition. The fine-grain ceramics exhibit mainly relaxor ferroelectric behavior with a smaller dielectric constant. The difference is explained by different relaxational dynamics of polar nanoclusters, which appear to be more stabilized at high temperatures in the fine-grain ceramics by pinning at grain boundaries. Below Tc, the growth of ferroelectric domains is suppressed in fine-grain ceramics as supported also by a second harmonic generation. On the other hand, polar phonon frequencies and their temperature dependences are almost independent of the grain size, but the selection rules for the cubic symmetry are not obeyed and all phonons are split due to a locally broken symmetry by polar nanoregions and chemical disorder. The lowest-frequency polar phonon undergoes partial softening down to ~ 0.1 THz near Tc = 440 K in both ceramics, but the dielectric anomaly is caused predominantly by flipping and breathing of polar nanoclusters. Due to contribution of both the soft phonon mode and dielectric relaxations into the dielectric constant, the ferroelectric phase transition, which corresponds to the percolation threshold of the polar nanoregions into macroscopic domains, can be considered as a special case of crossover between the displacive and order-disorder type.

The paper describes heterostructures spontaneously formed in PMN-PT single crystals cooled under bias electric field applied along [001]pc and then zero-field-heated in the vicinity of the so-called depoling temperature. In particular, formation of l amellar structures composed of tetragonal-like and rhombohedral-like layers extending over macroscopic (mm) lengths is demonstrated by optical observations and polarized Raman investigations.
The parameters influencing the band gap of tin sulphide thin nano-crystalline films have been investigated. Both grain size and lattice parameters are known to influence the band gap. The present study initially investigates each contribution individ ually. The experimentally determined dependency on lattice parameter is verified by theoretical calculations. We also suggest how to treat the variation of band gap as a two variable problem. The results allow us to show dependency of effective mass (reduced) on lattice unit volume.
Dielectric and magnetic properties of Eu0.5Ba0.25Sr0.25TiO3 are investigated between 10 K and 300 K in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 100 THz. A peak in permittivity revealed near 130 K and observed ferroelectric hysteresis loops prove the ferroel ectric order below thistemperature. The peak in permittivity is given mainly by softening of the lowest frequency polar phonon (soft mode revealed in THz and IR spectra) that demonstrates displacive character of the phase transition. Room-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis reveals cubic structure, but the IR reflectivity spectra give evidence of a lower crystal structure, presumably tetragonal I4/mcm with tilted oxygen octahedra as it has been observed in EuTiO3. The magnetic measurements show that the antiferromagnetic order occurs below 1.8 K. Eu0.5Ba0.25Sr0.25TiO3 has three times lower coercive field than Eu0.5Ba0.5TiO3, therefore we propose this system for measurements of electric dipole moment of electron.
Silicate ceramics are of considerable promise as high frequency dielectrics in emerging millimetre wave applications including high bandwidth wireless communication and sensing. In this review, we show how high quality factors and low, thermally stab le permittivities arise in ordered silicate structures. On the basis of a large number of existing studies, the dielectric performance of silicate ceramics is comprehensively summarized and presented, showing how microstructure and SiO4 tetrahedral connectivity affect polarizability and dielectric losses. We critically examine the appropriateness of silicate materials in future applications as effective millimetre wave dielectrics with low losses and tuneable permittivities. The development of new soft chemistry based processing routes for silicate dielectric ceramics is identified as being instrumental towards the reduction of processing temperatures, thus enabling silicate ceramics to be co-fired in the production of components functioning in the mm wave regime.
A correlation between structure and vibrational properties related to a ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition in perovskite Pb(1-x)(Na0.5Sm0.5)xTiO3 (PNST - x) polycrystalline powders is discussed. Substitution leads to reduction of tetragon ality which is associated with a shift of the phase transition to lower temperatures. The nature of the phase transition gets diffused with increasing substitution.
