We demonstrate nuclear double resonance for nanometer-scale volumes of spins where random fluctuations rather than Boltzmann polarization dominate. When the Hartmann-Hahn condition is met in a cross-polarization experiment, flip-flops occur between two species of spins and their fluctuations become coupled. We use magnetic resonance force microscopy to measure this effect between 1H and 13C spins in 13C-enriched stearic acid. The development of a cross-polarization technique for statistical ensembles adds an important tool for generating chemical contrast in nanometer-scale magnetic resonance.

The drive to improve the sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to smaller and smaller sample volumes has led to the development of a variety of techniques distinct from conventional inductive detection. In this chapter, we focus on the tech nique of force-detected NMR as one of the most successful in yielding sensitivity improvements. We review the rationale for the technique, its basic principles, and give a brief history of its most important results. We then cover in greater detail its application in the first demonstration of three-dimensional (3D) nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with nanometer-scale resolution. Next we present recent developments and likely paths for improvement. Finally, the technique and its potential are discussed in the context of competing and complementary technologies.
We demonstrate that zero-field $beta$-detected nuclear quadrupole resonance and spin relaxation of low energy $^8$Li can be used as a sensitive local probe of structural phase transitions near a surface. We find that the transition near the surface o f a SrTiO$_3$ single crystal occurs at $T_c sim 150$ K, i.e., 45 K higher than $T^{bulk}_c$, and that the tetragonal domains formed below $T_c$ are randomly oriented.
We study the statistical mechanics of double-stranded semi-flexible polymers using both analytical techniques and simulation. We find a transition at some finite temperature, from a type of short range order to a fundamentally different sort of short range order. In the high temperature regime, the 2-point correlation functions of the object are identical to worm-like chains, while in the low temperature regime they are different due to a twist structure. In the low temperature phase, the polymers develop a kink-rod structure which could clarify some recent puzzling experiments on actin.
The many body quantum dynamics of dipolar coupled nuclear spins I = 1/2 on an otherwise isolated cubic lattice are studied with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). By increasing the signal-to-noise ratio by two orders of magnitude compared with previou s reports for the free induction decay (FID) of 19F in CaF2 we obtain new insight into its long-time behavior. We confirm that the tail of the FID is an exponentially decaying cosine, but our measurements reveal a second universal decay mode with comparable frequency but twice the decay constant. This result is in agreement with a recent theoretical prediction for the FID in terms of eigenvalues for the time evolution of chaotic many-body quantum systems.
We propose a simple procedure by which the interaction parameters of the classical spin Hamiltonian can be determined from the knowledge of four-point correlation functions and specific heat. The proposal is demonstrated by using the correlation and specific heat data generated by Monte Carlo method on one- and two-dimensional Ising-like models, and on the two-dimensional Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction. A recipe for applying our scheme to experimental images of magnetization such as those made by magnetic force microscopy is outlined.
