The high-frequency-peaked BL-Lacertae object objectname{1ES 0806+524}, at redshift z=0.138, was observed in the very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray regime by VERITAS between November 2006 and April 2008. These data encompass the two-, and three-telescope commissioning phases, as well as observations with the full four-telescope array. objectname{1ES 0806+524} is detected with a statistical significance of 6.3 standard deviations from 245 excess events. Little or no measurable variability on monthly time scales is found. The photon spectrum for the period November 2007 to April 2008 can be characterized by a power law with photon index $3.6 pm 1.0_{mathrm{stat}} pm 0.3_{mathrm{sys}}$ between $sim$300 GeV and $sim$700 GeV. The integral flux above 300 GeV is $(2.2pm0.5_{mathrm{stat}}pm0.4_{mathrm{sys}})times10^{-12}:mathrm{cm}^{2}:mathrm{s}^{-1}$ which corresponds to 1.8% of the Crab Nebula flux. Non contemporaneous multiwavelength observations are combined with the VHE data to produce a broadband spectral energy distribution that can be reasonably described using a synchrotron-self Compton model.

The high-frequency-peaked BL Lac (HBL) 1ES 0806+524 (z = 0.138) was discovered in VHE $gamma$ rays in 2008. Until now, the broad-band spectrum of 1ES 0806+524 has been only poorly characterized, in particular at high energies. We analysed multiwavele ngth observations from $gamma$ rays to radio performed from 2011 January to March, which were triggered by the high activity detected at optical frequencies. These observations constitute the most precise determination of the broad-band emission of 1ES 0806+524 to date. The stereoscopic MAGIC observations yielded a $gamma$-ray signal above 250 GeV of $(3.7 pm 0.7)$ per cent of the Crab Nebula flux with a statistical significance of 9.9 $sigma$. The multiwavelength observations showed significant variability in essentially all energy bands, including a VHE $gamma$-ray flare that lasted less than one night, which provided unprecedented evidence for short-term variability in 1ES 0806+524. The spectrum of this flare is well described by a power law with a photon index of $2.97 pm 0.29$ between $sim$150 GeV and 1 TeV and an integral flux of $(9.3 pm 1.9)$ per cent of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV. The spectrum during the non-flaring VHE activity is compatible with the only available VHE observation performed in 2008 with VERITAS when the source was in a low optical state. The broad-band spectral energy distribution can be described with a one-zone Synchrotron Self Compton model with parameters typical for HBLs, indicating that 1ES 0806+524 is not substantially different from the HBLs previously detected.
The active galactic nucleus PKS 0301-243 (z=0.266) is a high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac object that is detected at high energies (HE, 100 MeV < E < 100 GeV) by Fermi/LAT. This paper reports on the discovery of PKS 0301-243 at very high energies (E>100 GeV) by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) from observations between September 2009 and December 2011 for a total live time of 34.9 hours. Gamma rays above 200 GeV are detected at a significance of 9.4{sigma}. A hint of variability at the 2.5{sigma} level is found. An integral flux I(E > 200 GeV) = (3.3 +/- 1.1_stat +/- 0.7_syst)e-12 ph cm^-2s^-1 and a photon index {Gamma} = 4.6 +/- 0.7_stat +/- 0.2_syst are measured. Multi-wavelength light curves in HE, X-ray and optical bands show strong variability, and a minimal variability timescale of eight days is estimated from the optical light curve. A single-zone leptonic synchrotron self-Compton scenario satisfactorily reproduces the multi-wavelength data. In this model, the emitting region is out of equipartition and the jet is particle dominated. Because of its high redshift compared to other sources observed at TeV energies, the very high energy emission from PKS 0301-243 is attenuated by the extragalactic background light (EBL) and the measured spectrum is used to derive an upper limit on the opacity of the EBL.
1ES 0414+009 (z = 0.287) is a distant high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object, and has long been considered a likely emitter of very-high energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-rays due to its high X-ray and radio flux. Observations in the VHE gamma-ray band and across the electromagnetic spectrum can provide insights into the origin of highly energetic particles present in the source and the radiation processes at work. Because of the distance of the source, the gamma-ray spectrum might provide further limits on the level of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL). We report observations made between October 2005 and December 2009 with H.E.S.S., an array of four imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Observations at high energies (HE, 100 MeV - 100 GeV) with the Fermi-LAT instrument in the first 20 months of its operation are also reported. To complete the multi-wavelength picture, archival UV and X-ray observations with the Swift satellite and optical observations with the ATOM telescope are also used. Based on the observations with H.E.S.S., 1ES 0414+009 is detected for the first time in the VHE band. An excess of 224 events is measured, corresponding to a significance of 7.8 sigma. The photon spectrum of the source is well described by a power law, with photon index of 3.45 pm 0.25stat pm 0.20syst. The integral flux above 200 GeV is (1.88 pm 0.20stat pm 0.38syst) times10-12 cm-2 s-1. Observations with the Fermi-LAT in the first 20 months of operation show a flux between 200 MeV and 100 GeV of (2.3 pm 0.2stat) times 10-9 erg cm-2 s-1, and a spectrum well described by a power-law function with a photon index 1.85 pm 0.18. Swift/XRT observations show an X-ray flux between 2 and 10 keV of (0.8 - 1) times 10-11 erg cm-2 s-1, and a steep spectrum (2.2 - 2.3). Combining X-ray with optical-UV data, a fit with a log-parabolic function locates the synchrotron peak around 0.1 keV. ...
The BL Lacertae object 1ES 1440+122 was observed in the energy range from 85 GeV to 30 TeV by the VERITAS array of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The observations, taken between 2008 May and 2010 June and totalling 53 hours, resulted in th e discovery of $gamma$-ray emission from the blazar, which has a redshift $z$=0.163. 1ES 1440+122 is detected at a statistical significance of 5.5 standard deviations above the background with an integral flux of (2.8$pm0.7_{mathrm{stat}}pm0.8_{mathrm{sys}}$) $times$ 10$^{-12}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (1.2% of the Crab Nebulas flux) above 200 GeV. The measured spectrum is described well by a power law from 0.2 TeV to 1.3 TeV with a photon index of 3.1 $pm$ 0.4$_{mathrm{stat}}$ $pm$ 0.2$_{mathrm{sys}}$. Quasi-simultaneous multi-wavelength data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (0.3--300 GeV) and the Swift X-ray Telescope (0.2--10 keV) are additionally used to model the properties of the emission region. A synchrotron self-Compton model produces a good representation of the multi-wavelength data. Adding an external-Compton or a hadronic component also adequately describes the data.
The detection of the high-frequency peaked BL Lac object (HBL) SHBL J001355.9-185406 ($z$=0.095) at high (HE; 100 MeV$<$E$<$300 GeV) and very high-energy (VHE; $E>100,{rm GeV}$) with the fer Large Area Telescope (LAT) and the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) is reported. Dedicated observations have been performed with the H.E.S.S. telescopes, leading to a detection at the $5.5,sigma$ significance level. The measured flux above 310 GeV is $(8.3 pm 1.7_{rm{stat}}pm 1.7_{rm{sys}})times 10^{-13}$ photons cms (about 0.6% of that of the Crab Nebula), and the power law spectrum has a photon index of indexHESS. Using 3.5 years of publicly available fla data, a faint counterpart has been detected in the LAT data at the $5.5,sigma$ significance level, with an integrated flux above 300 MeV of $(9.3 pm 3.4_{rm stat} pm 0.8_{rm sys})times 10^{-10}$ photons cms and a photon index of $Gamma = 1.96 pm 0.20_{rm stat} pm 0.08_{rm sys}$. X-ray observations with textit{Swift}-XRT allow the synchrotron peak energy in $ u F_ u$ representation to be located at $sim 1.0,{rm keV}$. The broadband spectral energy distribution is modelled with a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model and the optical data by a black-body emission describing the thermal emission of the host galaxy. The derived parameters are typical for HBLs detected at VHE, with a particle dominated jet.
