We use the entropy function formalism introduced by A. Sen to obtain the entropy of $AdS_{2}times S^{d-2}$ extremal and static black holes in four and five dimensions, with higher derivative terms of a general type. Starting from a generalized Einstein--Maxwell action with nonzero cosmological constant, we examine all possible scalar invariants that can be formed from the complete set of Riemann invariants (up to order 10 in derivatives). The resulting entropies show the deviation from the well known Bekenstein--Hawking area law $S=A/4G$ for Einsteins gravity up to second order derivatives.

Using the Sens mechanism we calculate the entropy for an $AdS_{2}times S^{d-2}$ extremal and static black hole in four dimensions, with higher derivative terms that comes from a three parameter non-minimal Einstein-Maxwell theory. The explicit result s for Gauss-Bonnet in the gauge-gravity sector are shown.

This thesis is divided in two parts, each one addressing problems that can be relevant in the study of compact objects. The first part deals with the study of a magnetized and self-gravitating gas of degenerated fermions (electrons and neutrons) as s ources of a Bianchi-I space-time. We solve numerically the Einstein-Maxwell field equations for a large set of initial conditions of the dynamical variables. The collapsing singularity is isotropic for the neutron gas and can be anisotropic for the electron gas. This result is consistent with the fact that electrons exhibit a stronger coupling with the magnetic field, which is the source of anisotropy in the dynamical variables. In the second part we calculate the entropy of extremal black holes in 4 and 5 dimensions, using the entropy function formalism of Sen and taking into account higher order derivative terms that come from the complete set of Riemann invariants. The resulting entropies show the deviations from the well know Bekenstein-Hawking area law.
The ratio of the shear viscosity to the entropy density is calculated for non-extremal Gauss-Bonnet (GB) black holes coupled to Born-Infeld (BI) electrodynamics in $5$ dimensions. The result is found to get corrections from the BI parameter and is an alytically exact upto all orders in this parameter. The computations are then extended to $D$ dimensions.
We review an explicit regularization of the AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence, that preserves all isometries of bulk and boundary degrees of freedom. This scheme is useful to characterize the space of the unitary evolution operators that describe the dy namics of the microstates of extremal black holes in four spacetime dimensions. Using techniques from algebraic number theory to evaluate the transition amplitudes, we remark that the regularization scheme expresses the fast quantum computation capability of black holes as well as its chaotic nature.
We construct the microstates of near-extremal black holes in AdS_5 x S^5 as gases of defects distributed in heavy BPS operators in the dual SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. These defects describe open strings on spherical D3-branes in the S^5, and we show th at they dominate the entropy by directly enumerating them and comparing the results with a partition sum calculation. We display new decoupling limits in which the field theory of the lightest open strings on the D-branes becomes dual to a near-horizon region of the black hole geometry. In the single-charge black hole we find evidence for an infrared duality between SU(N) Yang-Mills theories that exchanges the rank of the gauge group with an R-charge. In the two-charge case (where pairs of branes intersect on a line), the decoupled geometry includes an AdS_3 factor with a two-dimensional CFT dual. The degeneracy in this CFT accounts for the black hole entropy. In the three-charge case (where triples of branes intersect at a point), the decoupled geometry contains an AdS_2 factor. Below a certain critical mass, the two-charge system displays solutions with naked timelike singularities even though they do not violate a BPS bound. We suggest a string theoretic resolution of these singularities.
