This paper addresses the problem of efficiently storing and accessing massive data blocks in a large-scale distributed environment, while providing efficient fine-grain access to data subsets. This issue is crucial in the context of applications in the field of databases, data mining and multimedia. We propose a data sharing service based on distributed, RAM-based storage of data, while leveraging a DHT-based, natively parallel metadata management scheme. As opposed to the most commonly used grid storage infrastructures that provide mechanisms for explicit data localization and transfer, we provide a transparent access model, where data are accessed through global identifiers. Our proposal has been validated through a prototype implementation whose preliminary evaluation provides promising results.

We consider the problem of efficiently managing massive data in a large-scale distributed environment. We consider data strings of size in the order of Terabytes, shared and accessed by concurrent clients. On each individual access, a segment of a st ring, of the order of Megabytes, is read or modified. Our goal is to provide the clients with efficient fine-grain access the data string as concurrently as possible, without locking the string itself. This issue is crucial in the context of applications in the field of astronomy, databases, data mining and multimedia. We illustrate these requiremens with the case of an application for searching supernovae. Our solution relies on distributed, RAM-based data storage, while leveraging a DHT-based, parallel metadata management scheme. The proposed architecture and algorithms have been validated through a software prototype and evaluated in a cluster environment.
An emerging class of data-intensive applications involve the geographically dispersed extraction of complex scientific information from very large collections of measured or computed data. Such applications arise, for example, in experimental physics , where the data in question is generated by accelerators, and in simulation science, where the data is generated by supercomputers. So-called Data Grids provide essential infrastructure for such applications, much as the Internet provides essential services for applications such as e-mail and the Web. We describe here two services that we believe are fundamental to any Data Grid: reliable, high-speed transporet and replica management. Our high-speed transport service, GridFTP, extends the popular FTP protocol with new features required for Data Grid applciations, such as striping and partial file access. Our replica management service integrates a replica catalog with GridFTP transfers to provide for the creation, registration, location, and management of dataset replicas. We present the design of both services and also preliminary performance results. Our implementations exploit security and other services provided by the Globus Toolkit.
Cloud service providers are distributing data centers geographically to minimize energy costs through intelligent workload distribution. With increasing data volumes in emerging cloud workloads, it is critical to factor in the network costs for trans ferring workloads across data centers. For geo-distributed data centers, many researchers have been exploring strategies for energy cost minimization and intelligent inter-data-center workload distribution separately. However, prior work does not comprehensively and simultaneously consider data center energy costs, data transfer costs, and data center queueing delay. In this paper, we propose a novel game theory-based workload management framework that takes a holistic approach to the cloud operating cost minimization problem by making intelligent scheduling decisions aware of data transfer costs and the data center queueing delay. Our framework performs intelligent workload management that considers heterogeneity in data center compute capability, cooling power, interference effects from task co-location in servers, time-of-use electricity pricing, renewable energy, net metering, peak demand pricing distribution, and network pricing. Our simulations show that the proposed game-theoretic technique can minimize the cloud operating cost more effectively than existing approaches.

This chapter introduces the state-of-the-art in the emerging area of combining High Performance Computing (HPC) with Big Data Analysis. To understand the new area, the chapter first surveys the existing approaches to integrating HPC with Big Data. Ne xt, the chapter introduces several optimization solutions that focus on how to minimize the data transfer time from computation-intensive applications to analysis-intensive applications as well as minimizing the end-to-end time-to-solution. The solutions utilize SDN to adaptively use both high speed interconnect network and high performance parallel file systems to optimize the application performance. A computational framework called DataBroker is designed and developed to enable a tight integration of HPC with data analysis. Multiple types of experiments have been conducted to show different performance issues in both message passing and parallel file systems and to verify the effectiveness of the proposed research approaches.
Stencil computation is one of the most important kernels in various scientific and engineering applications. A variety of work has focused on vectorization and tiling techniques, aiming at exploiting the in-core data parallelism and data locality res pectively. In this paper, the downsides of existing vectorization schemes are analyzed. Briefly, they either incur data alignment conflicts or hurt the data locality when integrated with tiling. Then we propose a novel transpose layout to preserve the data locality for tiling and reduce the data reorganization overhead for vectorization simultaneously. To further improve the data reuse at the register level, a time loop unroll-and-jam strategy is designed to perform multistep stencil computation along the time dimension. Experimental results on the AVX-2 and AVX-512 CPUs show that our approach obtains a competitive performance.
