Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p geq 3$. We classify $p$-divisible groups over regular local rings of the form $W(k)[[t_1,...,t_r,u]]/(u^e+pb_{e-1}u^{e-1}+...+pb_1u+pb_0)$, where $b_0,...,b_{e-1}in W(k)[[t_1,...,t_r]]$ and $b_0$ is an invertible element. This classification was in the case $r = 0$ conjectured by Breuil and proved by Kisin.

A p-divisible group, or more generally an F-crystal, is said to be Hodge-Newton reducible if its Hodge polygon passes through a break point of its Newton polygon. Katz proved that Hodge-Newton reducible F-crystals admit a canonical filtration called the Hodge-Newton filtration. The notion of Hodge-Newton reducibility plays an important role in the deformation theory of p-divisible groups; the key property is that the Hodge-Newton filtration of a p-divisible group over a field of characteristic p can be uniquely lifted to a filtration of its deformation. We generalize Katzs result to F-crystals that arise from an unramified local Shimura datum of Hodge type. As an application, we give a generalization of Serre-Tate deformation theory for local Shimura data of Hodge type. We also apply our deformation theory to study some congruence relations on Shimura varieties of Hodge type.

Let $p$ be a prime. Let $(R,ideal{m})$ be a regular local ring of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ and absolute index of ramification $e$. We provide general criteria of when each abelian scheme over $Spec Rsetminus{ideal{m}}$ extends to an abelian schem e over $Spec R$. We show that such extensions always exist if $ele p-1$, exist in most cases if $ple ele 2p-3$, and do not exist in general if $ege 2p-2$. The case $ele p-1$ implies the uniqueness of integral canonical models of Shimura varieties over a discrete valuation ring $O$ of mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ and index of ramification at most $p-1$. This leads to large classes of examples of Neron models over $O$. If $p>2$ and index $p-1$, the examples are new.

Let G be a profinite group which is topologically finitely generated, p a prime number and d an integer. We show that the functor from rigid analytic spaces over Q_p to sets, which associates to a rigid space Y the set of continuous d-dimensional pse udocharacters G -> O(Y), is representable by a quasi-Stein rigid analytic space X, and we study its general properties. Our main tool is a theory of determinants extending the one of pseudocharacters but which works over an arbitrary base ring; an independent aim of this paper is to expose the main facts of this theory. The moduli space X is constructed as the generic fiber of the moduli formal scheme of continuous formal determinants on G of dimension d. As an application to number theory, this provides a framework to study the generic fibers of pseudodeformation rings (e.g. of Galois representations), especially in the residually reducible case, and including when p <= d.

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic $p$. We first classify the $D$-truncations mod $p$ of Shimura $F$-crystals over $k$ and then we study stratifications defined by inner isomorphism classes of these $D$-truncations. T his generalizes previous works of Kraft, Ekedahl, Oort, Moonen, and Wedhorn. As a main tool we introduce and study Bruhat $F$-decompositions; they generalize the combined form of Steinberg theorem and of classical Bruhat decompositions for reductive groups over $k$.

If the $ell$-adic cohomology of a projective smooth variety, defined over a $frak{p}$-adic field $K$ with finite residue field $k$, is supported in codimension $ge 1$, then any model over the ring of integers of $K$ has a $k$-rational point. This sli ghtly improves our earlier result math/0405318: we needed there the model to be regular (but then our result was more general: we obtained a congruence for the number of points, and $K$ could be local of characteristic $p>0$).
